    Isolated Wired and Wireless Battery Charger with Integrated Boost Converter for PHEV and EV Applications

    Vehicle charging and vehicle traction drive components can be integrated for multi-functional operations, as these functions are currently operating independently. While the vehicle is parked, the hardware that is available from the traction drive can be used for charging. The only exception to this would be the dynamic vehicle-charging concept on roadways. WPT can be viewed as a revolutionary step in PEV charging because it fits the paradigm of vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) wirelessly. WPT charging is convenient and flexible not only because it has no cables and connectors that are necessary, but due more to the fact that charging becomes fully independent. This is possibly the most convenient attribute of WPT as PEV charging can be fully autonomous and may eventually eclipse conductive charging. This technology also provides an opportunity to develop an integrated charger technology that will allow for both wired and wireless charging methods. Also the integrated approach allows for higher charging power while reducing the weight and volume of the charger components in the vehicle. The main objective of this work is to design, develop, and demonstrate integrated wired and wireless chargers with boost functionality for traction drive to provide flexibility to the EV customers

    Wireless power transfer techniques have been gaining researchers' and industry attention due to the increasing number of battery-powered devices, such as mobile computers, mobile phones, smart devices, intelligent sensors, mainly as a way to replace the standard cable charging, but also for powering battery-less equipment. The storage capacity of batteries is an extremely important element of how a device can be used. If we talk about battery-powered electronic equipment, the autonomy is one factor that may be essential in choosing a device or another, making the solution of remote powering very attractive. A distinction has to be made between the two forms of wireless power transmission, as seen in terms of how the transmitted energy is used at the receiving point: - Transmission of information or data, when it is essential for an amount of energy to reach the receiver to restore the transmitted information; - Transmission of electric energy in the form of electromagnetic field, when the energy transfer efficiency is essential, the power being used to energize the receiving equipment.     A review on power electronics technologies for electric mobility

    Concerns about greenhouse gas emissions are a key topic addressed by modern societies worldwide. As a contribution to mitigate such effects caused by the transportation sector, the full adoption of electric mobility is increasingly being seen as the main alternative to conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, which is supported by positive industry indicators, despite some identified hurdles. For such objective, power electronics technologies play an essential role and can be contextualized in different purposes to support the full adoption of electric mobility, including on-board and off-board battery charging systems, inductive wireless charging systems, unified traction and charging systems, new topologies with innovative operation modes for supporting the electrical power grid, and innovative solutions for electrified railways. Embracing all of these aspects, this paper presents a review on power electronics technologies for electric mobility where some of the main technologies and power electronics topologies are presented and explained.     Challenges and Barriers of Wireless Charging Technologies for Electric Vehicles

    Electric vehicles could be a significant aid in lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Even though extensive study has been done on the features and traits of electric vehicles and the nature of their charging infrastructure, network modeling for electric vehicle manufacturing has been limited and unchanging. The necessity of wireless electric vehicle charging, based on magnetic resonance coupling, drove the primary aims for this review work. Herein, we examined the basic theoretical framework for wireless power transmission systems for EV charging and performed a software-in-the-loop analysis, in addition to carrying out a performance analysis of an EV charging system based on magnetic resonance. This study also covered power pad designs and created workable remedies for the following issues: (i) how power pad positioning affected the function of wireless charging systems and (ii) how to develop strategies to keep power efficiency at its highest level. Moreover, safety features of wireless charging systems, owing to interruption from foreign objects and/or living objects, were analyzed, and solutions were proposed to ensure such systems would operate as safely and optimally as possible

    SAFETY BRAKES AND WIRELESS WARNING SYSTEM FOR BABY STROLLER

    Safety Brakes and Wireless Warning System is a design-based project where a 'Radio Frequency (RF) Wireless Communication System' plays the main roles to stop the baby stroller automatically. This system comprises an external motor controller circuit that interfaces with the RF receiver on the stroller. The author will deal with RF devices and motor controller for Final Year Project I. The goals for Radio Frequency (RF) devices are to design and construct a wireless-based system that monitors and informs their status which will then be used to transfer the signals tu controller circuit and in other similar applications. The benefits of this system are to replace the current safety methods by brakes the stroller manually and it also offer a better enhancement system. For advanced application, other application such as alarming system can be integrated together with the RF devices if security is the major concern. The final output from the direct current motor is a prototype of a braking system which is the integration of RF communication based and controller circuit connected via wired link to the baby stroller. The RF receiver and RF transmitter devices can be applied by leaving the devices alone but separated in any place that in the frequency range so that they can communicate. The receiver can receives the transmitted signal from the transmitter. Overall, the project is the best platform to improve the safety braking system and ignites another innovative invention in the future

    Improving the mechanistic study of neuromuscular diseases through the development of a fully wireless and implantable recording device

    Neuromuscular diseases manifest by a handful of known phenotypes affecting the peripheral nerves, skeletal muscle fibers, and neuromuscular junction. Common signs of these diseases include demyelination, myasthenia, atrophy, and aberrant muscle activity—all of which may be tracked over time using one or more electrophysiological markers. Mice, which are the predominant mammalian model for most human diseases, have been used to study congenital neuromuscular diseases for decades. However, our understanding of the mechanisms underlying these pathologies is still incomplete. This is in part due to the lack of instrumentation available to easily collect longitudinal, in vivo electrophysiological activity from mice. There remains a need for a fully wireless, batteryless, and implantable recording system that can be adapted for a variety of electrophysiological measurements and also enable long-term, continuous data collection in very small animals. To meet this need a miniature, chronically implantable device has been developed that is capable of wirelessly coupling energy from electromagnetic fields while implanted within a body. This device can both record and trigger bioelectric events and may be chronically implanted in rodents as small as mice. This grants investigators the ability to continuously observe electrophysiological changes corresponding to disease progression in a single, freely behaving, untethered animal. The fully wireless closed-loop system is an adaptable solution for a range of long-term mechanistic and diagnostic studies in rodent disease models. Its high level of functionality, adjustable parameters, accessible building blocks, reprogrammable firmware, and modular electrode interface offer flexibility that is distinctive among fully implantable recording or stimulating devices. The key significance of this work is that it has generated novel instrumentation in the form of a fully implantable bioelectric recording device having a much higher level of functionality than any other fully wireless system available for mouse work. This has incidentally led to contributions in the areas of wireless power transfer and neural interfaces for upper-limb prosthesis control. Herein the solution space for wireless power transfer is examined including a close inspection of far-field power transfer to implanted bioelectric sensors. Methods of design and characterization for the iterative development of the device are detailed. Furthermore, its performance and utility in remote bioelectric sensing applications is demonstrated with humans, rats, healthy mice, and mouse models for degenerative neuromuscular and motoneuron diseases

    Real World Assessment of an Auto-parametric Electromagnetic Vibration Energy Harvester

    The convention within the eld of vibration energy harvesting (VEH) has revolved around designing resonators with natural frequencies that match single fixed frequency sinusoidal input. However, real world vibrations can be random, multi-frequency, broadband and time-varying in nature. Building upon previous work on auto-parametric resonance, the fundamentally different approach allows multiple axes vibration and has the potential to achieve higher power density as well as wider operational frequency bandwidth. This paper presents the power response of a packaged auto-parametric VEH prototype (practical operational volume 126 cm^3) towards various real world vibration sources including vibration of a bridge, a compressor motor as well as an automobile. At auto-parametric resonance (driven at 23.5 Hz and 1 grms), the prototype can output a peak of 78.9 mW and 4.5 Hz of -3dB bandwidth. Furthermore, up to ~1 mW of average power output was observed from the harvester on the Forth Road Bridge. The harvested electrical energy from various real world sources were used to power up a power conditioning circuit, a wireless sensor mote, a MEMS (micro-electromechanical system) accelerometer and other low power sensors. This demonstrates the concept of self-sustaining vibration-powered wireless sensor systems in real world scenarios, to potentially realise maintenance-free autonomous structural health and condition monitoring.This work was supported by EPSRC (grant EP/L010917/1) and the Cambridge Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction

    Vibrational energy harvesting for sensors in vehicles

    The miniaturization of semiconductor technology and reduction in power requirements have begun to enable wireless self-sufficient devices, powered by ambient energy. To date the primary application lies in generating and transmitting sensory data. The number of sensors and their applications in automotive vehicles has grown drastically in the last decade, a trend that seems to continue still. Wireless self-powered sensors can facilitate current sensor systems by removing the need for cabling and may enable additional applications. These systems have the potential to provide new avenues of optimization in safety and performance.This thesis delves into the topic of vibrations as ambient energy source, primarily for sensors in automotive vehicles. The transduction of small amounts of vibrational, or kinetic, energy to electrical power, also known as vibrational energy harvesting, is an extensive field of research with a plethora of inventions. A short review is given for energy harvesters, in an automotive context, utilizing transduction through either the piezoelectric effect or magnetic induction. Two practical examples, for ambient vibration harvesting in vehicles, are described in more detail. The first is a piezoelectric beam for powering a strain sensor on the engines rotating flexplate. It makes combined use of centrifugal force, gravitational pull and random vibrations to enhance performance and reduce required system size. The simulated power output is 370 \ub5W at a rotation frequency of 10.5 Hz, with a bandwidth of 2.44 Hz. The second example is an energy harvesting unit placed on a belt buckle. It implements magnetic induction by the novel concept of a spring balance air gap of a magnetic circuit, to efficiently harvest minute vibrations. Simulations show the potential to achieve 52 \ub5W under normal road conditions driving at 70 km/h. Theoretical modeling of these systems is also addressed. Fundamental descriptions of the lumped and distributed models are given. Based on the lumped models of the piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) and the electromagnetic energy harvester (EMEH), a unified model is described and analyzed. New insights are gained regarding the pros and cons of the two types of energy harvester run at either resonance or anti-resonance. A numerical solution is given for the exact boundary of dimensionless quality factor and dimensionless intrinsic resistance, at which the system begins to exhibit anti-resonance. Regarding the maximum achievable power, the typical PEH is favored when running the system in anti-resonance and the typical EMEH is favored at resonance. The described modeling considers all parameters of the lumped model and thus provides a useful tool for developing vibrational energy harvester prototypes

    MULTI‐PHYSICAL MODELLING AND PROTOTYPING OF AN ENERGY HARVESTING SYSTEM INTEGRATED IN A RAILWAY PNEUMATIC SUSPENSION

    The aim of this PhD thesis is the investigation of an energy harvesting system to be integrated in a railway pneumatic spring to recovery otherwise wasted energy source from suspension vibration. Exploiting the piezoelectric effect to convert the mechanical energy into an electrical one, the final scope consists on the use of this system to power supply one or more sensors that can give useful information for the monitoring and the diagnostics of vehicle or its subsystems. Starting from the analysis of the energy sources, a multi‐physical approach to the study of an energy harvesting system is proposed to take into account all physics involved in the phenomenon, to make the most of the otherwise wasted energy and to develop a suitable and affordable tool for the design. The project of the energy harvesting device embedded in a railway pneumatic spring has been carried out by means of using a finite element technique and multi‐physics modelling activity. The possibility to combine two energy extraction processes was investigated with the purpose of making the most of the characteristics of the system and maximize the energy recovering. Exploiting commercial piezoelectric transducers, an experimental activity was conducted in two steps. A first mock‐up was built and tested on a shaker to develop the device and to tune the numerical model against experimental evidence. In the second step a fullscale prototype of an air spring for metro application with the EH system was realized. In order to test the full‐scale component, the design of a new test bench was carried out. Finally, the Air spring integrated with the EH device was tested and models validated
