    A Web-based IPTV Content Syndication System for Personalized Content Guide

    In this paper, we propose a web-based content syndication system in which users can easily choose IPTV contents. This system generates personalized content guide to provide a list of IPTV contents with respect to user’s interests and statistics information of their online social community. For this, IPTV contents and relevant metadata are collected from various sources and transformed. Then the service and content metadata are processed by user metadata including audience measurement and community metadata. The metadata flows are separated from content flows of transport network. The implementation of IPTV content syndication system demonstrates how to arrange IPTV contents efficiently from content providers to the end user’s screen. We also show that the user metadata including online community information are important for the system’s performance and the user’s satisfaction

    Le monde de la TV est en cours de transformation de la tĂ©lĂ©vision analogique Ă  la tĂ©lĂ©vision numĂ©rique, qui est capable de diffuser du contenu de haute qualitĂ©, offrir aux consommateurs davantage de choix, et rendre l'expĂ©rience de visualisation plus interactive. IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) prĂ©sente une rĂ©volution dans la tĂ©lĂ©vision numĂ©rique dans lequel les services de tĂ©lĂ©vision numĂ©rique sont fournis aux utilisateurs en utilisant le protocole Internet (IP) au dessus d une connexion haut dĂ©bit. Les progrĂšs de la technologie IPTV permettra donc un nouveau modĂšle de fourniture de services. Les fonctions offertes aux utilisateurs leur permettent de plus en plus d autonomie et de plus en plus de choix. Il en est notamment ainsi de services de type nTS (pour network Time Shifting en anglais) qui permettent Ă  un utilisateur de visionner un programme de tĂ©lĂ©vision en dĂ©calage par rapport Ă  sa programmation de diffusion, ou encore des services de type nPVR (pour network Personal Video Recorder en anglais) qui permettent d enregistrer au niveau du rĂ©seau un contenu numĂ©rique pour un utilisateur. D'autre part, l'architecture IMS proposĂ©e dans NGN fournit une architecture commune pour les services IPTV. MalgrĂ© les progrĂšs rapides de la technologie de tĂ©lĂ©vision interactive (comprenant notamment les technologies IPTV et NGN), la personnalisation de services IPTV en est encore Ă  ses dĂ©buts. De nos jours, la personnalisation des services IPTV se limite principalement Ă  la recommandation de contenus et Ă  la publicitĂ© ciblĂ©e. Ces services ne sont donc pas complĂštement centrĂ©s sur l utilisateur, alors que choisir manuellement les canaux de diffusion et les publicitĂ©s dĂ©sirĂ©es peut reprĂ©senter une gĂȘne pour l utilisateur. L adaptation des contenus numĂ©riques en fonction de la capacitĂ© des rĂ©seaux et des dispositifs utilisĂ©s n est pas encore prise en compte dans les implĂ©mentations actuelles. Avec le dĂ©veloppement des technologies numĂ©riques, les utilisateurs sont amenĂ©s Ă  regarder la tĂ©lĂ©vision non seulement sur des postes de tĂ©lĂ©vision, mais Ă©galement sur des smart phones, des tablettes digitales, ou encore des PCs. En consĂ©quence, personnaliser les contenus IPTV en fonction de l appareil utilisĂ© pour regarder la tĂ©lĂ©vision, en fonction des capacitĂ©s du rĂ©seau et du contexte de l utilisateur reprĂ©sente un dĂ©fi important. Cette thĂšse prĂ©sente des solutions visant Ă  amĂ©liorer la personnalisation de services IPTV Ă  partir de trois aspects: 1) Nouvelle identification et authentification pour services IPTV. 2) Nouvelle architecture IPTV intĂ©grĂ©e et comportant un systĂšme de sensibilitĂ© au contexte pour le service de personnalisation. 3) Nouveau service de recommandation de contenu en fonction des prĂ©fĂ©rences de l utilisateur et aussi des informations contextesInternet Protocol TV (IPTV) delivers television content to users over IP-based network. Different from the traditional TV services, IPTV platforms provide users with large amount of multimedia contents with interactive and personalized services, including the targeted advertisement, on-demand content, personal video recorder, and so on. IPTV is promising since it allows to satisfy users experience and presents advanced entertainment services. On the other hand, the Next Generation Network (NGN) approach in allowing services convergence (through for instance coupling IPTV with the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architecture or NGN Non-IMS architecture) enhances users experience and allows for more services personalization. Although the rapid advancement in interactive TV technology (including IPTV and NGN technologies), services personalization is still in its infancy, lacking the real distinguish of each user in a unique manner, the consideration of the context of the user (who is this user, what is his preferences, his regional area, location, ..) and his environment (characteristics of the users devices screen types, size, supported resolution, and networks available network types to be used by the user, available bandwidth, .. ) as well as the context of the service itself (content type and description, available format HD/SD , available language, ..) in order to provide the adequate personalized content for each user. This advanced IPTV services allows services providers to promote new services and open new business opportunities and allows network operators to make better utilization of network resources through adapting the delivered content according to the available bandwidth and to better meet the QoE (Quality of Experience) of clients. This thesis focuses on enhanced personalization for IPTV services following a user-centric context-aware approach through providing solutions for: i) Users identification during IPTV service access through a unique and fine-grained manner (different from the identification of the subscription which is the usual current case) based on employing a personal identifier for each user which is a part of the user context information. ii) Context-Aware IPTV service through proposing a context-aware system on top of the IPTV architecture for gathering in a dynamic and real-time manner the different context information related to the user, devices, network and service. The context information is gathered throughout the whole IPTV delivery chain considering the user domain, network provider domain, and service/content provider domain.     Selecting and augmenting a FOSS development and deployment environment for personalized video-oriented services in a Telco context

    The great demand for video services on the Internet is one contributing factor that led telecom companies to search for solutions to deliver innovative video services, using the different access technologies managed by them and leveraging the capacity of enforcing Quality of Service (QoS). One part of the solution was an infrastructure that guarantees QoS for these services, in the form of the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) framework. The IMS framework was developed for delivering innovative multimedia services, but IMS alone does not provide the required services. This has led to further work in the area of multimedia service architectures. One noteworthy architecture is IPTV. IPTV is more than what its name implies, as it allows the development of various innovative video-oriented services and not just tv. When IPTV was introduced, many thought that it would bring back the revenue loss that telecom companies experienced to over-the-top (OTT) service providers. However, despite all its promises, the IPTV implementation has not shown as wide an uptake as one would expect. Although there could be various reasons for the slow penetration of IPTV, one reason could be the technical challenge that IPTV poses to service developers. One of the main reasons for the embarking of the research reported in this thesis was to identify and select free and open source software (FOSS) based platforms and augment them for easy development and deployment of video-oriented services. The thesis motivated how the IPTV architecture, with some modification, can be a good architecture to develop innovative video-oriented services. For a better understanding and investigate the issues of video-oriented service development on different platforms, we followed an incremental and iterative prototyping method. As a result, various video-oriented services were first developed and implementation-related issues were analyzed. This has helped us to identify problems that service developers face, including the requirement to utilize a number of protocols to develop an IPTV-based video-oriented service and the lack of a platform that provides a consistent programming interface to implement them all. The process also helped us to identify new uses cases through the process. As part of our selection process, we found that the Mobicents service development platform can be used as the basis for a good service development and deployment environment for video-oriented services. Mobicents is a Java-based service delivery platform for quick development, deployment and management of next generation network applications. Mobicents is a good choice because it provides a consistent programming interface and supports the various protocols needed in a consistent manner or an easy way to include the support for them. We used Mobicents to compose the environment that developers can use to build video-oriented services. Specifically we developed components and service building blocks that service developer can use to develop various innovative video-oriented services. During our research, we also identified various issues with regard to support from streaming servers in general and open source streaming servers in particular and also with the protocol they use. Specifically, we identified issues with Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP), a protocol specified as the media control protocol in the IPTV specification, and made proposals for solving them. We developed an RSTP proxy to augment the features lacking in the current streaming servers and implemented some of the features we proposed in it

However there is no standard for provisioning the Triple play services, rather they are provisioned individually, since the requirements are quite different for each service. The digital revolution helped to create and deliver a high quality media solutions. One of the most demanding services is the Video on Demand (VoD). This implicates a dedicated streaming channel for each user in order to provide normal media player commands (as pause, fast forward). Most of the multimedia companies that develops personalized products does not always fulfil the users needs and are far from being cheap solutions. The goal of the project was to create a reliable and scalable triple play solution that works via Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), fully capable of dealing with the existing state of the art multimedia technologies only resorting to open-source tools. This project was design to be a transparent web environment using only web technologies to maximize the potential of the services. HyperText Markup Language (HTML),Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and JavaScript were the used technologies for the development of the applications. Both a administration and user interfaces were developed to fully manage all video contents and properly view it in a rich and appealing application, providing the proof of concept. The developed prototype was tested in a WLAN with up to four clients and the Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) was measured for several combinations of active services. In the end it is possible to acknowledge that the developed prototype was capable of dealing with all the problems of WLAN technologies and successfully delivery all the proposed services with high QoE

    Analysis and implementation of the Large Scale Video-on-Demand System

    Next Generation Network (NGN) provides multimedia services over broadband based networks, which supports high definition TV (HDTV), and DVD quality video-on-demand content. The video services are thus seen as merging mainly three areas such as computing, communication, and broadcasting. It has numerous advantages and more exploration for the large-scale deployment of video-on-demand system is still needed. This is due to its economic and design constraints. It's need significant initial investments for full service provision. This paper presents different estimation for the different topologies and it require efficient planning for a VOD system network. The methodology investigates the network bandwidth requirements of a VOD system based on centralized servers, and distributed local proxies. Network traffic models are developed to evaluate the VOD system's operational bandwidth requirements for these two network architectures.     Address translation problems in IMS based next generation networks

    The development of packed based multimedia networks reached a turning point when the ITU-T and the ETSI have incorporated the IMS to the NGN. With the fast development of mobile communication more and more services and content are available. In contrast with fix network telephony both the services and the devices are personalized in the “mobile world”. Services, known from the Internet - like e-mail, chat, browsing, presence, etc. – are already available via mobile devices as well. The IMS originally wanted to exploit both the benefits of mobile networks and the fancy services of the Internet. But today it is already more than that. IMS is the core of the next generation telecommunication networks and a basis for fix-mobile convergent services. The fact however that IMS was originally a “mobile” standard, where IPv6 was not oddity generated some problems for the fix networks, where IPv4 is used.     Integrating identity-based cryptography in IMS service authentication

    Nowadays, the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is a promising research field. Many ongoing works related to the security and the performances of its employment are presented to the research community. Although, the security and data privacy aspects are very important in the IMS global objectives, they observe little attention so far. Secure access to multimedia services is based on SIP and HTTP digest on top of IMS architecture. The standard deploys AKA-MD5 for the terminal authentication. The third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) provided Generic Bootstrapping Architecture (GBA) to authenticate the subscriber before accessing multimedia services over HTTP. In this paper, we propose a new IMS Service Authentication scheme using Identity Based cryptography (IBC). This new scheme will lead to better performances when there are simultaneous authentication requests using Identity-based Batch Verification.     COIN : a customisable, incentive driven video on demand framework for low-cost IPTV services

    There has been a significant rise in the provision of television and video services over IP (IPTV) in recent years. Increasing network capacity and falling bandwidth costs have made it both technically and economically feasible for service providers to deliver IPTV services. Several telecommunications (telco) operators worldwide are rolling out IPTV solutions and view IPTV as a major service differentiator and alternative revenue source. The main challenge that IPTV providers currently face, however, is the increasingly congested television service provider market, which also includes Internet Television. IPTV solutions therefore need strong service differentiators to succeed. IPTV solutions can doubtlessly sell much faster if they are more affordable or low-cost. Advertising has already been used in many service sectors to help lower service costs, including traditional broadcast television. This thesis therefore explores the role that advertising can play in helping to lower the cost of IPTV services and to incentivise IPTV billing. Another approach that IPTV providers can use to help sell their product is by addressing the growing need for control by today's multimedia users. This thesis will therefore explore the varied approaches that can be used to achieve viewer focused IPTV implementations. To further lower the cost of IPTV services, telcos can also turn to low-cost, open source platforms for service delivery. The adoption of low-cost infrastructure by telcos can lead to reduced Capital Expenditure (CAPEX), which in turn can lead to lower service fees, and ultimately to higher subscriptions and revenue. Therefore, in this thesis, the author proposes a CustOmisable, INcentive (COIN) driven Video on Demand (VoD) framework to be developed and deployed using the Mobicents Communication Platform, an open source service creation and execution platform. The COIN framework aims to provide a viewer focused, economically competitive service that combines the potential cost savings of using free and open source software (FOSS), with an innovative, incentive-driven billing approach. This project will also aim to evaluate whether the Mobicents Platform is a suitable service creation and execution platform for the proposed framework. Additionally, the proposed implementation aims to be interoperable with other IPTV implementations, hence shall follow current IPTV standardisation architectures and trends.
