    Evaluating Latency in Multiprocessing Embedded Systems for the Smart Grid

    Smart grid endpoints need to use two environments within a processing system (PS), one with a Linux-type operating system (OS) using the Arm Cortex-A53 cores for management tasks, and the other with a standalone execution or a real-time OS using the Arm Cortex-R5 cores. The Xen hypervisor and the OpenAMP framework allow this, but they may introduce a delay in the system, and some messages in the smart grid need a latency lower than 3 ms. In this paper, the Linux thread latencies are characterized by the Cyclictest tool. It is shown that when Xen hypervisor is used, this scenario is not suitable for the smart grid as it does not meet the 3 ms timing constraint. Then, standalone execution as the real-time part is evaluated, measuring the delay to handle an interrupt created in programmable logic (PL). The standalone application was run in A53 and R5 cores, with Xen hypervisor and OpenAMP framework. These scenarios all met the 3 ms constraint. The main contribution of the present work is the detailed characterization of each real-time execution, in order to facilitate selecting the most suitable one for each application.This work has been supported by the Ministerio de EconomĂ­a y Competitividad of Spain within the project TEC2017-84011-R and FEDER funds as well as by the Department of Education of the Basque Government within the fund for research groups of the Basque university system IT978-16.     Many-Core Architectures: Hardware-Software Optimization and Modeling Techniques

    During the last few decades an unprecedented technological growth has been at the center of the embedded systems design paramount, with Moore’s Law being the leading factor of this trend. Today in fact an ever increasing number of cores can be integrated on the same die, marking the transition from state-of-the-art multi-core chips to the new many-core design paradigm. Despite the extraordinarily high computing power, the complexity of many-core chips opens the door to several challenges. As a result of the increased silicon density of modern Systems-on-a-Chip (SoC), the design space exploration needed to find the best design has exploded and hardware designers are in fact facing the problem of a huge design space. Virtual Platforms have always been used to enable hardware-software co-design, but today they are facing with the huge complexity of both hardware and software systems. In this thesis two different research works on Virtual Platforms are presented: the first one is intended for the hardware developer, to easily allow complex cycle accurate simulations of many-core SoCs. The second work exploits the parallel computing power of off-the-shelf General Purpose Graphics Processing Units (GPGPUs), with the goal of an increased simulation speed. The term Virtualization can be used in the context of many-core systems not only to refer to the aforementioned hardware emulation tools (Virtual Platforms), but also for two other main purposes: 1) to help the programmer to achieve the maximum possible performance of an application, by hiding the complexity of the underlying hardware. 2) to efficiently exploit the high parallel hardware of many-core chips in environments with multiple active Virtual Machines.     Simulation Native des Systèmes Multiprocesseurs sur Puce à l'aide de la Virtualisation Assistée par le Matériel

    L'intégration de plusieurs processeurs hétérogènes en un seul système sur puce (SoC) est une tendance claire dans les systèmes embarqués. La conception et la vérification de ces systèmes nécessitent des plateformes rapides de simulation, et faciles à construire. Parmi les approches de simulation de logiciels, la simulation native est un bon candidat grâce à l'exécution native de logiciel embarqué sur la machine hôte, ce qui permet des simulations à haute vitesse, sans nécessiter le développement de simulateurs d'instructions. Toutefois, les techniques de simulation natives existantes exécutent le logiciel de simulation dans l'espace de mémoire partagée entre le matériel modélisé et le système d'exploitation hôte. Il en résulte de nombreux problèmes, par exemple les conflits l'espace d'adressage et les chevauchements de mémoire ainsi que l'utilisation des adresses de la machine hôte plutôt des celles des plates-formes matérielles cibles. Cela rend pratiquement impossible la simulation native du code existant fonctionnant sur la plate-forme cible. Pour surmonter ces problèmes, nous proposons l'ajout d'une couche transparente de traduction de l'espace adressage pour séparer l'espace d'adresse cible de celui du simulateur de hôte. Nous exploitons la technologie de virtualisation assistée par matériel (HAV pour Hardware-Assisted Virtualization) à cet effet. Cette technologie est maintenant disponibles sur plupart de processeurs grande public à usage général. Les expériences montrent que cette solution ne dégrade pas la vitesse de simulation native, tout en gardant la possibilité de réaliser l'évaluation des performances du logiciel simulé. La solution proposée est évolutive et flexible et nous fournit les preuves nécessaires pour appuyer nos revendications avec des solutions de simulation multiprocesseurs et hybrides. Nous abordons également la simulation d'exécutables cross- compilés pour les processeurs VLIW (Very Long Instruction Word) en utilisant une technique de traduction binaire statique (SBT) pour généré le code natif. Ainsi il n'est pas nécessaire de faire de traduction à la volée ou d'interprétation des instructions. Cette approche est intéressante dans les situations où le code source n'est pas disponible ou que la plate-forme cible n'est pas supporté par les compilateurs reciblable, ce qui est généralement le cas pour les processeurs VLIW. Les simulateurs générés s'exécutent au-dessus de notre plate-forme basée sur le HAV et modélisent les processeurs de la série C6x de Texas Instruments (TI). Les résultats de simulation des binaires pour VLIW montrent une accélération de deux ordres de grandeur par rapport aux simulateurs précis au cycle près.Integration of multiple heterogeneous processors into a single System-on-Chip (SoC) is a clear trend in embedded systems. Designing and verifying these systems require high-speed and easy-to-build simulation platforms. Among the software simulation approaches, native simulation is a good candidate since the embedded software is executed natively on the host machine, resulting in high speed simulations and without requiring instruction set simulator development effort. However, existing native simulation techniques execute the simulated software in memory space shared between the modeled hardware and the host operating system. This results in many problems, including address space conflicts and overlaps as well as the use of host machine addresses instead of the target hardware platform ones. This makes it practically impossible to natively simulate legacy code running on the target platform. To overcome these issues, we propose the addition of a transparent address space translation layer to separate the target address space from that of the host simulator. We exploit the Hardware-Assisted Virtualization (HAV) technology for this purpose, which is now readily available on almost all general purpose processors. Experiments show that this solution does not degrade the native simulation speed, while keeping the ability to accomplish software performance evaluation. The proposed solution is scalable as well as flexible and we provide necessary evidence to support our claims with multiprocessor and hybrid simulation solutions. We also address the simulation of cross-compiled Very Long Instruction Word (VLIW) executables, using a Static Binary Translation (SBT) technique to generated native code that does not require run-time translation or interpretation support. This approach is interesting in situations where either the source code is not available or the target platform is not supported by any retargetable compilation framework, which is usually the case for VLIW processors. The generated simulators execute on top of our HAV based platform and model the Texas Instruments (TI) C6x series processors.     Mixed-Criticality Systems on Commercial-Off-the-Shelf Multi-Processor Systems-on-Chip

    Avionics and space industries are struggling with the adoption of technologies like multi-processor system-on-chips (MPSoCs) due to strict safety requirements. This thesis propose a new reference architecture for MPSoC-based mixed-criticality systems (MCS) - i.e., systems integrating applications with different level of criticality - which are a common use case for aforementioned industries. This thesis proposes a system architecture capable of granting partitioning - which is, for short, the property of fault containment. It is based on the detection of spatial and temporal interference, and has been named the online detection of interference (ODIn) architecture. Spatial partitioning requires that an application is not able to corrupt resources used by a different application. In the architecture proposed in this thesis, spatial partitioning is implemented using type-1 hypervisors, which allow definition of resource partitions. An application running in a partition can only access resources granted to that partition, therefore it cannot corrupt resources used by applications running in other partitions. Temporal partitioning requires that an application is not able to unexpectedly change the execution time of other applications. In the proposed architecture, temporal partitioning has been solved using a bounded interference approach, composed of an offline analysis phase and an online safety net. The offline phase is based on a statistical profiling of a metric sensitive to temporal interference’s, performed in nominal conditions, which allows definition of a set of three thresholds: 1. the detection threshold TD; 2. the warning threshold TW ; 3. the α threshold. Two rules of detection are defined using such thresholds: Alarm rule When the value of the metric is above TD. Warning rule When the value of the metric is in the warning region [TW ;TD] for more than α consecutive times. ODIn’s online safety-net exploits performance counters, available in many MPSoC architectures; such counters are configured at bootstrap to monitor the selected metric(s), and to raise an interrupt request (IRQ) in case the metric value goes above TD, implementing the alarm rule. The warning rule is implemented in a software detection module, which reads the value of performance counters when the monitored task yields control to the scheduler and reset them if there is no detection. ODIn also uses two additional detection mechanisms: 1. a control flow check technique, based on compile-time defined block signatures, is implemented through a set of watchdog processors, each monitoring one partition. 2. a timeout is implemented through a system watchdog timer (SWDT), which is able to send an external signal when the timeout is violated. The recovery actions implemented in ODIn are: • graceful degradation, to react to IRQs of WDPs monitoring non-critical applications or to warning rule violations; it temporarily stops non-critical applications to grant resources to the critical application; • hard recovery, to react to the SWDT, to the WDP of the critical application, or to alarm rule violations; it causes a switch to a hot stand-by spare computer. Experimental validation of ODIn was performed on two hardware platforms: the ZedBoard - dual-core - and the Inventami board - quad-core. A space benchmark and an avionic benchmark were implemented on both platforms, composed by different modules as showed in Table 1 Each version of the final application was evaluated through fault injection (FI) campaigns, performed using a specifically designed FI system. There were three types of FI campaigns: 1. HW FI, to emulate single event effects; 2. SW FI, to emulate bugs in non-critical applications; 3. artificial bug FI, to emulate a bug in non-critical applications introducing unexpected interference on the critical application.     DeSyRe: on-Demand System Reliability

    The DeSyRe project builds on-demand adaptive and reliable Systems-on-Chips (SoCs). As fabrication technology scales down, chips are becoming less reliable, thereby incurring increased power and performance costs for fault tolerance. To make matters worse, power density is becoming a significant limiting factor in SoC design, in general. In the face of such changes in the technological landscape, current solutions for fault tolerance are expected to introduce excessive overheads in future systems. Moreover, attempting to design and manufacture a totally defect and fault-free system, would impact heavily, even prohibitively, the design, manufacturing, and testing costs, as well as the system performance and power consumption. In this context, DeSyRe delivers a new generation of systems that are reliable by design at well-balanced power, performance, and design costs. In our attempt to reduce the overheads of fault-tolerance, only a small fraction of the chip is built to be fault-free. This fault-free part is then employed to manage the remaining fault-prone resources of the SoC. The DeSyRe framework is applied to two medical systems with high safety requirements (measured using the IEC 61508 functional safety standard) and tight power and performance constraints

    Arm TrustZone: evaluating the diversity of the memory subsystem

    Dissertação de mestrado em Engenharia Eletrónica Industrial e ComputadoresThe diversification of the embedded market has led the once single-purpose built embedded device to become a broader concept that can accommodate more general-purpose solutions, by widening its hardware and software resources. A huge diversity in system resources and requirements has boosted the investigation around virtualization technology, which is becoming prevalent in the embedded systems domain, allowing timing and spatial sharing of hardware and software resources between specialized subsystems. As strict timing demands imposed in realtime virtualized systems must be met, coupled with a small margin for the penalties incurred by conventional software-based virtualization, resort to hardware-assisted solutions has become indispensable. Although not a virtualization but security-oriented technology, Arm TrustZone is seen by many as a reliable hardware-based virtualization alternative, with the low cost and high spread of TrustZone-enabled processors standing as strong arguments for its acceptance. But, since Trust- Zone only dictates the hardware infrastructure foundations, providing SoC designers with a range of components that can fulfil specific functions, several key-components and subsystems of this technology are implementation defined. This approach may hinder a system designer’s work, as it may impair and make the portability of system software a lot more complicated. As such, this thesis proposes to examine how different manufacturers choose to work with the TrustZone architecture, and how the changes introduced by this technology may affect the security and performance of TrustZone-assisted virtualization solutions, in order to scale back those major constraints. It identifies the main properties that impact the creation and execution of system software and points into what may be the most beneficial approaches for developing and using TrustZone-assisted hardware and software.A recente metamorfose na área dos sistemas embebidos transformou estes dispositivos, outrora concebidos com um único e simples propósito, num aglomerado de subsistemas prontos para integrar soluções mais flexíveis. Este aumento de recursos e de requisitos dos sistemas potenciou a investigação em soluções de virtualização dos mesmos, permitindo uma partilha simultânea de recursos de hardware e software entre os vários subsistemas. A proliferação destas soluções neste domínio, onde os tempos de execução têm de ser respeitados e a segurança é um ponto-chave, tem levado à adoção de técnicas de virtualização assistidas por hardware. Uma tecnologia que tem vindo a ser utilizada para este fim é a Arm TrustZone, apesar de inicialmente ter sido desenvolvida como uma tecnologia de proteção, dado a sua maior presença em placas de médio e baixo custo quando comparada a outras tecnologias. Infelizmente, dado que a TrustZone apenas fornece diretrizes base sobre as quais os fabricantes podem contruir os seus sistemas, as especificações da tecnologia divergem de fabricante para fabricante, ou até entre produtos com a mesma origem. Aliada à geral escassez de informação sobre esta tecnologia, esta característica pode trazer problemas para a criação e portabilidade de software de sistema dependente desta tecnologia. Como tal, a presente tese propõe examinar, de uma forma sistematizada, de que forma diferentes fabricantes escolhem implementar sistemas baseados na arquitetura TrustZone e em que medida as mudanças introduzidas por esta tecnologia podem afetar a segurança e desempenho de soluções de virtualização baseadas na mesma. São identificadas as principais características que podem influenciar a criação e execução de software de sistema e potenciais medidas para diminuir o seu impacto, assim como boas práticas a seguir no desenvolvimento na utilização de software e hardware baseados na TrustZone

    Resource-aware Programming in a High-level Language - Improved performance with manageable effort on clustered MPSoCs

    Bis 2001 bedeutete Moores und Dennards Gesetz eine Verdoppelung der Ausführungszeit alle 18 Monate durch verbesserte CPUs. Heute ist Nebenläufigkeit das dominante Mittel zur Beschleunigung von Supercomputern bis zu mobilen Geräten. Allerdings behindern neuere Phänomene wie "Dark Silicon" zunehmend eine weitere Beschleunigung durch Hardware. Um weitere Beschleunigung zu erreichen muss sich auch die Soft­ware mehr ihrer Hardware Resourcen gewahr werden. Verbunden mit diesem Phänomen ist eine immer heterogenere Hardware. Supercomputer integrieren Beschleuniger wie GPUs. Mobile SoCs (bspw. Smartphones) integrieren immer mehr Fähigkeiten. Spezialhardware auszunutzen ist eine bekannte Methode, um den Energieverbrauch zu senken, was ein weiterer wichtiger Aspekt ist, welcher mit der reinen Geschwindigkeit abgewogen werde muss. Zum Beispiel werden Supercomputer auch nach "Performance pro Watt" bewertet. Zur Zeit sind systemnahe low-level Programmierer es gewohnt über Hardware nachzudenken, während der gemeine high-level Programmierer es vorzieht von der Plattform möglichst zu abstrahieren (bspw. Cloud). "High-level" bedeutet nicht, dass Hardware irrelevant ist, sondern dass sie abstrahiert werden kann. Falls Sie eine Java-Anwendung für Android entwickeln, kann der Akku ein wichtiger Aspekt sein. Irgendwann müssen aber auch Hochsprachen resourcengewahr werden, um Geschwindigkeit oder Energieverbrauch zu verbessern. Innerhalb des Transregio "Invasive Computing" habe ich an diesen Problemen gearbeitet. In meiner Dissertation stelle ich ein Framework vor, mit dem man Hochsprachenanwendungen resourcengewahr machen kann, um so die Leistung zu verbessern. Das könnte beispielsweise erhöhte Effizienz oder schnellerer Ausführung für das System als Ganzes bringen. Ein Kerngedanke dabei ist, dass Anwendungen sich nicht selbst optimieren. Stattdessen geben sie alle Informationen an das Betriebssystem. Das Betriebssystem hat eine globale Sicht und trifft Entscheidungen über die Resourcen. Diesen Prozess nennen wir "Invasion". Die Aufgabe der Anwendung ist es, sich an diese Entscheidungen anzupassen, aber nicht selbst welche zu fällen. Die Herausforderung besteht darin eine Sprache zu definieren, mit der Anwendungen Resourcenbedingungen und Leistungsinformationen kommunizieren. So eine Sprache muss ausdrucksstark genug für komplexe Informationen, erweiterbar für neue Resourcentypen, und angenehm für den Programmierer sein. Die zentralen Beiträge dieser Dissertation sind: Ein theoretisches Modell der Resourcen-Verwaltung, um die Essenz des resourcengewahren Frameworks zu beschreiben, die Korrektheit der Entscheidungen des Betriebssystems bezüglich der Bedingungen einer Anwendung zu begründen und zum Beweis meiner Thesen von Effizienz und Beschleunigung in der Theorie. Ein Framework und eine Übersetzungspfad resourcengewahrer Programmierung für die Hochsprache X10. Zur Bewertung des Ansatzes haben wir Anwendungen aus dem High Performance Computing implementiert. Eine Beschleunigung von 5x konnte gemessen werden. Ein Speicherkonsistenzmodell für die X10 Programmiersprache, da dies ein notwendiger Schritt zu einer formalen Semantik ist, die das theoretische Modell und die konkrete Implementierung verknüpft. Zusammengefasst zeige ich, dass resourcengewahre Programmierung in Hoch\-sprachen auf zukünftigen Architekturen mit vielen Kernen mit vertretbarem Aufwand machbar ist und die Leistung verbessert
