    Ontology for Representing Human Needs

    Need satisfaction plays a fundamental role in human well-being. Hence understanding citizens' needs is crucial for developing a successful social and economic policy. This notwithstanding, the concept of need has not yet found its place in information systems and online tools. Furthermore, assessing needs itself remains a labor-intensive, mostly offline activity, where only a limited support by computational tools is available. In this paper, we make the first step towards employing need management in the design of information systems supporting participation and participatory innovation by proposing OpeNeeD, a family of ontologies for representing human needs data. As a proof of concept, OpeNeeD has been used to represent, enrich and query the results of a needs assessment study in a local citizen community in one of the Vienna districts. The proposed ontology will facilitate such studies and enable the representation of citizens' needs as Linked Data, fostering its co-creation and incentivizing the use of Open Data and services based on it

    On-line analytical processing (OLAP) describes an approach to decision support, which aims to extract knowledge from a data warehouse, or more specifically, from data marts. Its main idea is providing navigation through data to non-expert users, so that they are able to interactively generate ad hoc queries without the intervention of IT professionals. This name was introduced in contrast to on-line transactional processing (OLTP), so that it reflected the different requirements and characteristics between these classes of uses.     FoP: Never-Ending Learner for Multimedia Knowledge Extraction

    International audience—In this paper we present our system Faces of Politics (henceforth FoP), that is able to continuously learn multimedia knowledge of Web multimedia resources about the presence of person(s) in a pictures and to leverage this knowledge to the Linked Open Data cloud (LOD-cloud). FoP promotes both scalability of the data lift process for this domain and a structured knowledge representation for complex queries. The system was bootstraped using Freebase data about politicians and their pictures, and we show that the model provides a good generalization with an error rate below 7%. Meantime, FoP not only relates a person to a multimedia resource, but it also detects and publishes metadata on the position of the person in the picture. Moreover, it supports the presence of several persons in the picture. At this step, FoP is also giving data in return to the LoD cloud that fed him in the first place: it leverages Linked Data on people recognized in these pictures, and on which rectangle area. This allows fine-grained queries like creating a curation of documents in which a person is depicted relatively to another for instance. On a technical point-of-view, we also provide a Website for browsing FoP knowledge base as Web users, and we also offer a public SPARQL endpoint for robots or other Web applications

Because the only software systems that composably scale to worldwide scope utilize the World Wide Web, it is evident that an extensible Web-based framework shows great promise to scale up the capabilities of M&S systems to meet the needs of training, analysis, acquisition, and the operational warfighter. By embracing commercial web technologies as a shared-communications platform and a ubiquitous-delivery framework, DoD M&S can fully leverage mainstream practices for enterprise-wide software development

    Anonymizing cybersecurity data in critical infrastructures: the CIPSEC approach

    Cybersecurity logs are permanently generated by network devices to describe security incidents. With modern computing technology, such logs can be exploited to counter threats in real time or before they gain a foothold. To improve these capabilities, logs are usually shared with external entities. However, since cybersecurity logs might contain sensitive data, serious privacy concerns arise, even more when critical infrastructures (CI), handling strategic data, are involved. We propose a tool to protect privacy by anonymizing sensitive data included in cybersecurity logs. We implement anonymization mechanisms grouped through the definition of a privacy policy. We adapt said approach to the context of the EU project CIPSEC that builds a unified security framework to orchestrate security products, thus offering better protection to a group of CIs. Since this framework collects and processes security-related data from multiple devices of CIs, our work is devoted to protecting privacy by integrating our anonymization approach.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    The Web as a Resource for Question Answering: Perspectives and Challenges

    The vast amounts of information readily available on the World Wide Web can be effectively used for question answering in two fundamentally different ways. In the federated approach, techniques for handling semistructured data are applied to access Web sources as if they were databases, allowing large classes of common questions to be answered uniformly. In the distributed approach, largescale text-processing techniques are used to extract answers directly from unstructured Web documents. Because the Web is orders of magnitude larger than any human-collected corpus, question answering systems can capitalize on its unparalleled-levels of data redundancy. Analysis of real-world user questions reveals that the federated and distributed approaches complement each other nicely, suggesting a hybrid approach in future question answering systems
