The advancement of modern agriculture is heavily dependent on accurate weed detection, which contributes to efficient resource utilization and increased crop yield. Traditional methods, however, often need more accuracy and efficiency. This paper presents WeedFocusNet, an innovative approach that leverages attention-driven ResNet152V2 transfer learning addresses these challenges. This approach enhances model generalization and focuses on critical features for weed identification, thereby overcoming the limitations of existing methods. The objective is to develop a model that enhances weed detection accuracy and optimizes computational efficiency. WeedFocusNet, a novel deep-learning model, performs weed detection better by employing attention-driven transfer learning based on the ResNet152V2 architecture. The model integrates an attention module, concentrating its predictions on the most significant image features. Evaluated on a dataset of weed and crop images, WeedFocusNet achieved an accuracy of 99.28%, significantly outperforming previous methods and models, such as MobileNetV2, ResNet50, and custom CNN models, in terms of accuracy, time complexity, and memory usage, despite its larger memory footprint. These results emphasize the transformative potential of WeedFocusNet as a powerful approach for automating weed detection in agricultural fields

Tomato Flower Detection and Three-Dimensional Mapping for Precision Pollination

    Get PDF
It is estimated that nearly 75% of major crops have some level of reliance on pollination. Humans are reliant on fruit and vegetable crops for many vital nutrients. With the intensification of agricultural production in response to human demand, native pollinator species are not able to provide sufficient pollination services, and managed bee colonies are in decline due to colony collapse disorder, among other issues. Previous work addresses a few of these issues by designing pollination systems for greenhouse operations or other controlled production systems but fails to address the larger need for development in other agricultural settings with less environmental control. In response to this crisis, this research aims to act as a vital first step towards the development of a more robust autonomous pollination system for agricultural crop production. The main objective of this research is to develop a flower detection and mapping system for a field crop setting. This research presents a method to detect and localize tomato flowers within a three-dimensional (3D) region. Tomato plants were grown in a raised-bed garden where images were collected of the overhead view of the plants. Images were then stitched together using a photogrammetry technique, accomplished by the Pix4Dmapper software, to form an orthomosaic and 3D representation of the raised-bed garden from a high spatial resolution aerial view. Various machine learning architectures were trained to detect tomato flowers from overhead images and were then tested on the orthomosaic images produced by the Pix4D software. The coordinates of the detected flowers in the orthomosaic were then compared to the 3D model representation to find approximate 3D coordinates for each of the flowers relative to a predefined origin. This research serves as a first step in autonomous pollination by presenting a way for machine vision and machine learning to be used to identify the presence and location of flowers on tomato crops. Future work will aim to expand flower detection to other crops varieties in varying field conditions

    Get PDF
Deep Learning has been successfully applied to image recognition, speech recognition, and natural language processing in recent years. Therefore, there has been an incentive to apply it in other fields as well. The field of agriculture is one of the most important fields in which the application of deep learning still needs to be explored, as it has a direct impact on human well-being. In particular, there is a need to explore how deep learning models can be used as a tool for optimal planting, land use, yield improvement, production/disease/pest control, and other activities. The vast amount of data received from sensors in smart farms makes it possible to use deep learning as a model for decision-making in this field. In agriculture, no two environments are exactly alike, which makes testing, validating, and successfully implementing such technologies much more complex than in most other industries. This paper reviews some recent scientific developments in the field of deep learning that have been applied to agriculture, and highlights some challenges and potential solutions using deep learning algorithms in agriculture. The results in this paper indicate that by employing new methods from deep learning, higher performance in terms of accuracy and lower inference time can be achieved, and the models can be made useful in real-world applications. Finally, some opportunities for future research in this area are suggested. This work is supported by the R&D Project BioDAgro—Sistema operacional inteligente de informação e suporte á decisão em AgroBiodiversidade, project PD20-00011, promoted by Fundação La Caixa and Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, taking place at the C-MAST-Centre for Mechanical and Aerospace Sciences and Technology, Department of Electromechanical Engineering of the University of Beira Interior, Covilhã, Portugal.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF
In recent years, the field of deep learning has played an important role towards automatic detection and classification of diseases in vegetables and fruits. This in turn has helped in improving the quality and production of vegetables and fruits. Citrus fruits are well known for their taste and nutritional values. They are one of the natural and well known sources of vitamin C and planted worldwide. There are several diseases which severely affect the quality and yield of citrus fruits. In this paper, a new deep learning based technique is proposed for citrus disease classification. Two different pre-trained deep learning models have been used in this work. To increase the size of the citrus dataset used in this paper, image augmentation techniques are used. Moreover, to improve the visual quality of images, hybrid contrast stretching has been adopted. In addition, transfer learning is used to retrain the pre-trained models and the feature set is enriched by using feature fusion. The fused feature set is optimized using a meta-heuristic algorithm, the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA). The selected features are used for the classification of six different diseases of citrus plants. The proposed technique attains a classification accuracy of 95.7% with superior results when compared with recent techniques

With the advent of agriculture 3.0 and 4.0, researchers are increasingly focusing on the development of innovative smart farming and precision agriculture technologies by introducing automation and robotics into the agricultural processes. Autonomous agricultural field machines have been gaining significant attention from farmers and industries to reduce costs, human workload, and required resources. Nevertheless, achieving sufficient autonomous navigation capabilities requires the simultaneous cooperation of different processes; localization, mapping, and path planning are just some of the steps that aim at providing to the machine the right set of skills to operate in semi-structured and unstructured environments. In this context, this study presents a low-cost local motion planner for autonomous navigation in vineyards based only on an RGB-D camera, low range hardware, and a dual layer control algorithm. The first algorithm exploits the disparity map and its depth representation to generate a proportional control for the robotic platform. Concurrently, a second back-up algorithm, based on representations learning and resilient to illumination variations, can take control of the machine in case of a momentaneous failure of the first block. Moreover, due to the double nature of the system, after initial training of the deep learning model with an initial dataset, the strict synergy between the two algorithms opens the possibility of exploiting new automatically labeled data, coming from the field, to extend the existing model knowledge. The machine learning algorithm has been trained and tested, using transfer learning, with acquired images during different field surveys in the North region of Italy and then optimized for on-device inference with model pruning and quantization. Finally, the overall system has been validated with a customized robot platform in the relevant environment
