ConfSys3.5: A Kaizen Conference Management System

    Get PDF
After over a decade and half of the development and improvement based on real experience, the third generation of ConfSys (ConfSys3) not only possesses features such as user-group management, daemon and multi-track academic meetings, but also is able to support multi-series academic conference. The experience with these previous versions of ConfSys pointed to the need for better usability and additional features for system management. This thesis presents the design and implementation of ConfSys3.5, a kaizen conference management system, with continuous improvements and new features to assist academics to manage the processes of their events, and to provide related services for author and conference participants. ConfSys3.5 uses the same Tomcat - Java Servlet/JSP - MySQL platform as previous versions of ConfSys, but has introduced Struts 2 in Java web application, improved database and user interfaces to address user’s requirements. Both user friendliness and efficiency in ConfSys3.5 have been improved thanks to the lessons learned from developing and using earlier versions of ConfSys. ConfSys3.5 not only improves usability, but also introduces new concepts, such as Auto Session Management and Program Generation to reduce repetitive work and make management work more flexible. Furthermore, the improved software framework and database provides clear structure and flexibility, thus making the maintenance and expansion of the software system easier

The mediating effect of endogenous creativity on knowledge exploitation and firm performance in an emerging economy

The emerging economies are key factors in the future growth of world trade and the maintenance of global financial stability. Little is known about the way in which firms in emerging economies strategically manage the learning â creativity process to develop competitive advantage in both domestic and global markets. We extend the literature on learning and human capital by positing a model and examining 1) the mediating role of higherorder human capital in the relationship between learning facilitation and knowledge exploitation (KE); and 2) the mediating role of endogenous creativity in the KE â firm performance relationship. Qualitative method based on the sample in Chinaâs firms was adopted and the results indicate that all the hypothesized relationships are supported

    Applied Evaluative Informetrics: Part 1

This manuscript is a preprint version of Part 1 (General Introduction and Synopsis) of the book Applied Evaluative Informetrics, to be published by Springer in the summer of 2017. This book presents an introduction to the field of applied evaluative informetrics, and is written for interested scholars and students from all domains of science and scholarship. It sketches the field's history, recent achievements, and its potential and limits. It explains the notion of multi-dimensional research performance, and discusses the pros and cons of 28 citation-, patent-, reputation- and altmetrics-based indicators. In addition, it presents quantitative research assessment as an evaluation science, and focuses on the role of extra-informetric factors in the development of indicators, and on the policy context of their application. It also discusses the way forward, both for users and for developers of informetric tools.Comment: The posted version is a preprint (author copy) of Part 1 (General Introduction and Synopsis) of a book entitled Applied Evaluative Bibliometrics, to be published by Springer in the summer of 201

Hypertext and the Docuverse: A Research Memo

    Get PDF
The term docuverse was first developed by Apple Computer guru Allen Kay in the late 1960’s. The underlying idea can be traced back decades earlier, to the visionary Vannevar Bush and the Memex (Bush, 1945). According to Kay, a docuverse is a set of related documents together with the linkages between them. In this paper, a docuverse is conceived as a collection of related scholarly documents together with the links, ties and bonds that can bring them together into an integrated logical and conceptual whole. Kay who also coined the term hypertext, which refers to an electronic document with existing and anticipated hypermedia technology. have already made possible the construction of an electronic web of all the related documents of social science (and any other academic discipline, professional field or interdiscipline) like third sector studies

Clab torino: A transdisciplinary environment to provide a challenge-based teaching model

    Get PDF
Promoting an open dialogue, a constant interdisciplinary collaboration with companies, between universities, about partnership or open innovation perspective, today is a challenge that still faces some resistance. Learning to deal with complexity, with the coexistence of different points of view, in collaboration to combined and re-combined know-how in ever new, original and challenging formulations, brings with its specific needs. In this sense, design takes on a fundamental role to create projects with a view to sustainable innovation, projects that are increasingly responsive to contemporary complexity. So, how does design education need to change? How do working designers and design researchers can update their skills to meet the challenges of the present and future? This contribution, through the experimentation of the Contamination Lab Torino, investigates a new design-driven educational model intended as an extremely dynamic process from the creation of a multidisciplinary team to the transition from a product design logic to a Product Service System one, as the most effective way to face the issue of the system management, as a way to guarantee the appropriate flexibility to the contemporary needs of our society

Development, Validation and Feasibility Study of a Remote Basic Skills Assessment for Wheelchair Service Providers

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to develop, validate and conduct a feasibility study of three remote basic skills assessment modalities for wheelchair service providers (WSP) including an online mock-client case study quiz (m1), an in-person skills assessment (m2) and a video conference skills assessment (m3). Prior to this study, we were unaware of a validated remote basic skills assessment for WSP that reflects all WHO 8 wheelchair service provision steps. Such a test may be an asset to training or professional organizations like the International Society of Wheelchair Professionals (ISWP) as a way to test provider competency or to warrant certification. Currently, we are unaware of any certification that includes a skills test as a requirement. Our first hypothesis was that all three modalities are comparable as evidenced by the mean score of ISWP Basic Knowledge Test (i.e., within one SD). Our second hypothesis was that all modalities were feasible according to seven defined feasibility criteria. Inclusion criteria included passing the ISWP Basic Knowledge Test. We recruited a total of 12 participants; all completed m1. Five completed m2 at the 35th International Seating Symposium and five completed m3 via Adobe Connect. Two participants dropped out of the study prior to completing a second testing modality. The results show that our first hypothesis was rejected because only m1 mean score was comparable to the ISWP Basic Knowledge Test (SD = .44). This is in contrast with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test results that show a statistically significant difference between these two. Hypothesis two was not rejected. The feasibility results reveal that all three modalities met the minimum criteria (86% success). Thus, based on this finding, m1, 2 and 3 have the potential to serve as remote basic skills assessments through ISWP or other training or credentialing organizations. However, according to both test performance and feasibility criteria, the study team and participants encountered the fewest challenges with m2, and therefore, we believe this assessment has the highest potential to be included in the ISWP WSP basic skills certification process to ensure fidelity to practice
