    Design of A Virtual Laboratory for Automation Control

    In the past, only students who studied on campus were able to access laboratory equipment in traditional lab courses; distance learning students, enrolled in online courses, were at a disadvantage for they could learn basic lab experiment principles but could never experience hands-on learning. Modeling and simulation can be a powerful tool for generating virtual laboratories for distance learning students. This thesis describes the design and development of a virtual laboratory for automation control using mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic components for an automation and control course at Old Dominion University. This virtual laboratory application was implemented for two platforms — Windows personal computers and Android smartphones. The virtual lab serves as pre-lab session for on-campus students and a virtual lab tool for distance-learning students to gain some “hands-on” lab experience. Utilizing the virtual learning environment as a supplement to engineering-based laboratories is also beneficial for students to prepare for the physical experiment and obtain a “hands-on,” practical lab experience without the hazards present in the physical lab. Such a methodology can also be applied to experiments in different fields such chemistry, etc

    Exploring Material Representations for Sparse Voxel DAGs

    Ray tracing is a popular technique used in movies and video games to create compelling visuals. Ray traced computer images are increasingly becoming more realistic and almost indistinguishable from real-word images. Due to the complexity of scenes and the desire for high resolution images, ray tracing can become very expensive in terms of computation and memory. To address these concerns, researchers have examined data structures to efficiently store geometric and material information. Sparse voxel octrees (SVOs) and directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) have proven to be successful geometric data structures for reducing memory requirements. Moxel DAGs connect material properties to these geometric data structures, but experience limitations related to memory, build times, and render times. This thesis examines the efficacy of connecting an alternative material data structure to existing geometric representations. The contributions of this thesis include the creation of a new material representation using hashing to accompany DAGs, a method to calculate surface normals using neighboring voxel data, and a demonstration and validation that DAGs can be used to super sample based on proximity. This thesis also validates the visual acuity from these methods via a user survey comparing different output images. In comparison to the Moxel DAG implementation, this work increases render time, but reduces build times and memory, and improves the visual quality of output images

    The use of microcomputers in mathematics teaching in Fiji

    At the end of 1983 the Ministry of Education in Fiji informed schools that computers would be introduced in 1984. In February 1984 some selected schools received the first microcomputers. At a Conference on Computers in the Classroom, held in August 1984 at the University of the South Pacific. the Head of Mathematics at a senior secondary school said, in a paper presented at the conference: 'while there may have been some pre-planning at headquarters level it seems that no arrangement was made with individual schools.’ Amongst the problems highlighted in the paper by the Head of Mathematics was: 'the difficulty in deciding on a suitable type programme to offer to the students.' This thesis primarily concerns the application of microcomputers in teaching mathematics in Fiji. The author's experience shows that teachers in Fiji are aware of the need to respond to the microcomputer technology but this response is restricted due to the almost total lack of staff with even a basic knowledge of computers.     Integrating Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems

    Remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) comprise the two major components of geographic information science (GISci), an overarching field of endeavor that also encompasses global positioning systems (GPS) technology, geodesy and traditional cartography (Goodchild 1992, Estes and Star 1993, Hepner et al. 2005). Although remote sensing and GIS developed quasi-independently, the synergism between them has become increasingly apparent (Aronoff 2005). Today, GIS software almost always includes tools for display and analysis of images, and image processing software commonly contains options for analyzing ‘ancillary’ geospatial data (Faust 1998). The significant progress made in ‘integration’ of remote sensing and GIS has been well-summarized in several reviews (Ehlers 1990, Mace 1991, Hinton 1996, Wilkinson 1996). Nevertheless, advances are so rapid that periodic reassessment of the state-of-the-art is clearly warranted

Despite recent developments, this is far from true for learning environments in schools and most undergraduate studies. This thesis proposes a framework for designing curricula where computers, and computer modelling in particular, are a major tool for learning. The framework, based on research on learning science and mathematics and on computer user interface, assumes that: 1) learning is an active process of creating meaning from representations; 2) learning takes place in a community of practice where students learn both from their own effort and from external guidance; 3) learning is a process of becoming familiar with concepts, with links between concepts, and with representations; 4) direct manipulation user interfaces allow students to explore concrete-abstract objects such as those of physics and can be used by students with minimal computer knowledge

    Annotation of multimedia learning materials for semantic search

    Multimedia is the main source for online learning materials, such as videos, slides and textbooks, and its size is growing with the popularity of online programs offered by Universities and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). The increasing amount of multimedia learning resources available online makes it very challenging to browse through the materials or find where a specific concept of interest is covered. To enable semantic search on the lecture materials, their content must be annotated and indexed. Manual annotation of learning materials such as videos is tedious and cannot be envisioned for the growing quantity of online materials. One of the most commonly used methods for learning video annotation is to index the video, based on the transcript obtained from translating the audio track of the video into text. Existing speech to text translators require extensive training especially for non-native English speakers and are known to have low accuracy. This dissertation proposes to index the slides, based on the keywords. The keywords extracted from the textbook index and the presentation slides are the basis of the indexing scheme. Two types of lecture videos are generally used (i.e., classroom recording using a regular camera or slide presentation screen captures using specific software) and their quality varies widely. The screen capture videos, have generally a good quality and sometimes come with metadata. But often, metadata is not reliable and hence image processing techniques are used to segment the videos. Since the learning videos have a static background of slide, it is challenging to detect the shot boundaries. Comparative analysis of the state of the art techniques to determine best feature descriptors suitable for detecting transitions in a learning video is presented in this dissertation. The videos are indexed with keywords obtained from slides and a correspondence is established by segmenting the video temporally using feature descriptors to match and align the video segments with the presentation slides converted into images. The classroom recordings using regular video cameras often have poor illumination with objects partially or totally occluded. For such videos, slide localization techniques based on segmentation and heuristics is presented to improve the accuracy of the transition detection. A region prioritized ranking mechanism is proposed that integrates the keyword location in the presentation into the ranking of the slides when searching for a slide that covers a given keyword. This helps in getting the most relevant results first. With the increasing size of course materials gathered online, a user looking to understand a given concept can get overwhelmed. The standard way of learning and the concept of “one size fits all” is no longer the best way to learn for millennials. Personalized concept recommendation is presented according to the user’s background knowledge. Finally, the contributions of this dissertation have been integrated into the Ultimate Course Search (UCS), a tool for an effective search of course materials. UCS integrates presentation, lecture videos and textbook content into a single platform with topic based search capabilities and easy navigation of lecture materials
