Analysis of Three-Dimensional Protein Images
A fundamental goal of research in molecular biology is to understand protein
structure. Protein crystallography is currently the most successful method for
determining the three-dimensional (3D) conformation of a protein, yet it
remains labor intensive and relies on an expert's ability to derive and
evaluate a protein scene model. In this paper, the problem of protein structure
determination is formulated as an exercise in scene analysis. A computational
methodology is presented in which a 3D image of a protein is segmented into a
graph of critical points. Bayesian and certainty factor approaches are
described and used to analyze critical point graphs and identify meaningful
substructures, such as alpha-helices and beta-sheets. Results of applying the
methodologies to protein images at low and medium resolution are reported. The
research is related to approaches to representation, segmentation and
classification in vision, as well as to top-down approaches to protein

Remote sensing of floe size distribution and surface topography
Floe size can be measured by several properties p- for instance, area or mean caliper diameter. Two definitions of floe size distribution seem particularly useful. F(p), the fraction of area covered by floes no smaller than p; and N(p), the number of floes per unit area no smaller than p. Several summertime distributions measured are a graph, their slopes range from -1.7 to -2.5. The variance of an estimate is also calculated
Stability of liquid ridges on chemical micro- and nanostripes
We analyze the stability of sessile filaments (ridges) of nonvolatile liquids
versus pearling in the case of externally driven flow along a chemical stripe
within the framework of the thin film approximation. The ridges can be stable
with respect to pearling even if the contact line is not completely pinned. A
generalized stability criterion for moving contact lines is provided. For large
wavelengths and no drive, within perturbation theory, an analytical expression
of the growth rate of pearling instabilities is derived. A numerical analysis
shows that drive further stabilizes the ridge by reducing the growth rate of
unstable perturbations, even though there is no complete stabilization. Hence
the stability criteria established without drive ensure overall stability.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure

Few examples of the varied surfaces forming an integral part of modern subjects include terrain, population density, surface atmospheric pressure, physico-chemical surfaces, computer graphics, and metrological surfaces. The focus of the work here is a group of data structures called Surface Networks, which abstract 2-dimensional surfaces by storing only the most important (also called fundamental, critical or surface-specific) points and lines in the surfaces. Surface networks are intelligent and “natural ” data structures because they store a surface as a framework of “surface ” elements unlike the DEM or TIN data structures. Automated Detection of Coronal Loops using a Wavelet Transform Modulus Maxima Method
We propose and test a wavelet transform modulus maxima method for the au-
tomated detection and extraction of coronal loops in extreme ultraviolet images
of the solar corona. This method decomposes an image into a number of size
scales and tracks enhanced power along each ridge corresponding to a coronal
loop at each scale. We compare the results across scales and suggest the
optimum set of parameters to maximise completeness while minimising detection
of noise. For a test coronal image, we compare the global statistics (e.g.,
number of loops at each length) to previous automated coronal-loop detection
algorithms
