An evaluation of NASA's program in human factors research: Aircrew-vehicle system interaction
Research in human factors in the aircraft cockpit and a proposed program augmentation were reviewed. The dramatic growth of microprocessor technology makes it entirely feasible to automate increasingly more functions in the aircraft cockpit; the promise of improved vehicle performance, efficiency, and safety through automation makes highly automated flight inevitable. An organized data base and validated methodology for predicting the effects of automation on human performance and thus on safety are lacking and without such a data base and validated methodology for analyzing human performance, increased automation may introduce new risks. Efforts should be concentrated on developing methods and techniques for analyzing man machine interactions, including human workload and prediction of performance
Continuous Improvement Through Knowledge-Guided Analysis in Experience Feedback
Continuous improvement in industrial processes is increasingly a key element of competitiveness for industrial systems. The management of experience feedback in this framework is designed to build, analyze and facilitate the knowledge sharing among problem solving practitioners of an organization in order to improve processes and products achievement. During Problem Solving Processes, the intellectual investment of experts is often considerable and the opportunities for expert knowledge exploitation are numerous: decision making, problem solving under uncertainty, and expert configuration. In this paper, our contribution relates to the structuring of a cognitive experience feedback framework, which allows a flexible exploitation of expert knowledge during Problem Solving Processes and a reuse such collected experience. To that purpose, the proposed approach uses the general principles of root cause analysis for identifying the root causes of problems or events, the conceptual graphs formalism for the semantic conceptualization of the domain vocabulary and the Transferable Belief Model for the fusion of information from different sources. The underlying formal reasoning mechanisms (logic-based semantics) in conceptual graphs enable intelligent information retrieval for the effective exploitation of lessons learned from past projects. An example will illustrate the application of the proposed approach of experience feedback processes formalization in the transport industry sector
Reflexivity and flexibility: Complementary routes to innovation?
Flexibility and reflexivity are essential processes for organisational innovation. The aim of the paper is to investigate their concurrent and interactive contribution in enhancing two innovation outcomes (the organisational openness towards innovation and the actual innovation adoption). Participants were 357 Italian employees. Results of a hierarchical regression model showed the role of both factors in fostering the two innovation outcomes under study. In addition, results showed the complementary interaction of reflexivity and flexibility, outlining two possible routes to innovation. Specifically, reflexivity appears to be a generative learning process capable of encouraging innovation in low-flexibility conditions, whereas flexibility tends to encourage innovation in low-reflexivity conditions. The findings provide empirical support of their roles as complementary resources for innovation, which has been under-examined in the literature
Toward a process theory of entrepreneurship: revisiting opportunity identification and entrepreneurial actions
This dissertation studies the early development of new ventures and small business and the entrepreneurship process from initial ideas to viable ventures. I unpack the micro-foundations of entrepreneurial actions and new ventures’ investor communications through quality signals to finance their growth path. This dissertation includes two qualitative papers and one quantitative study. The qualitative papers employ an inductive multiple-case approach and include seven medical equipment manufacturers (new ventures) in a nascent market context (the mobile health industry) across six U.S. states and a secondary data analysis to understand the emergence of opportunities and the early development of new ventures. The quantitative research chapter includes 770 IPOs in the manufacturing industries in the U.S. and investigates the legitimation strategies of young ventures to gain resources from targeted resource-holders.Open Acces
Digital Literacy Circulation: Adolescents and Flows of Knowledge about New Media
The aim of this paper is to discuss the output of an empirical research on digital skills in order to develop a typology of skills circulation among young digital users. Relying on research on digital literacy in media studies and on users in STS, in this article we start criticizing the concepts of \u201cdigital divide\u201d, \u201cdigital inequalities\u201d and \u201cdigital competencies\u201d. Then, we present the principal results of a research study involving 50 adolescents in Italy about how they acquired their competences in the use of digital media. This gave us the opportunity to focus on the digital skills of young people and the development of their abilities in using digital media. The research outlines the patterns of circulation in digital competences among young people in relation to family, school and peer group, defining four kinds of \u201cflows\u201d: parental flow (involving fathers and mothers), peer flow (connected to friends and people of the same age), educational flow (referring to formal education) and technological flow (involving technological devices, such as computers, laptops, smartphones, tablets, etc.). CEPS Task Force on Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity Technology, Governance and Policy Challenges Task Force Evaluation of the HLEG Trustworthy AI Assessment List (Pilot Version). CEPS Task Force Report 22 January 2020
The Centre for European Policy Studies launched a Task Force on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and
Cybersecurity in September 2019. The goal of this Task Force is to bring attention to the market,
technical, ethical and governance challenges posed by the intersection of AI and cybersecurity,
focusing both on AI for cybersecurity but also cybersecurity for AI. The Task Force is multi-stakeholder
by design and composed of academics, industry players from various sectors, policymakers and civil
society.
The Task Force is currently discussing issues such as the state and evolution of the application of AI
in cybersecurity and cybersecurity for AI; the debate on the role that AI could play in the dynamics
between cyber attackers and defenders; the increasing need for sharing information on threats and
how to deal with the vulnerabilities of AI-enabled systems; options for policy experimentation; and
possible EU policy measures to ease the adoption of AI in cybersecurity in Europe.
As part of such activities, this report aims at assessing the High-Level Expert Group (HLEG) on AI Ethics
Guidelines for Trustworthy AI, presented on April 8, 2019. In particular, this report analyses and
makes suggestions on the Trustworthy AI Assessment List (Pilot version), a non-exhaustive list aimed
at helping the public and the private sector in operationalising Trustworthy AI. The list is composed
of 131 items that are supposed to guide AI designers and developers throughout the process of
design, development, and deployment of AI, although not intended as guidance to ensure
compliance with the applicable laws. The list is in its piloting phase and is currently undergoing a
revision that will be finalised in early 2020.
This report would like to contribute to this revision by addressing in particular the interplay between
AI and cybersecurity. This evaluation has been made according to specific criteria: whether and how
the items of the Assessment List refer to existing legislation (e.g. GDPR, EU Charter of Fundamental
Rights); whether they refer to moral principles (but not laws); whether they consider that AI attacks
are fundamentally different from traditional cyberattacks; whether they are compatible with
different risk levels; whether they are flexible enough in terms of clear/easy measurement,
implementation by AI developers and SMEs; and overall, whether they are likely to create obstacles
for the industry.
The HLEG is a diverse group, with more than 50 members representing different stakeholders, such
as think tanks, academia, EU Agencies, civil society, and industry, who were given the difficult task of
producing a simple checklist for a complex issue. The public engagement exercise looks successful
overall in that more than 450 stakeholders have signed in and are contributing to the process.
The next sections of this report present the items listed by the HLEG followed by the analysis and
suggestions raised by the Task Force (see list of the members of the Task Force in Annex 1)
Human centric collaborative workplace: the human robot interaction system perspective
The implementation of smart technologies and physical collaboration with robots in manufacturing can provide competitive advantages in production, performance and quality, as well as improve working conditions for operators. Due to the rapid advancement of smart technologies and robot capabilities, operators face complex task processes, decline in competences due to robots overtaking tasks, and reduced learning opportunities, as the range of tasks that they are asked to perform is narrower. The Industry 5.0 framework introduced, among others, the human-centric workplace, promoting operators wellbeing and use of smart technologies and robots to support them. This new human centric framework enables operators to learn new skills and improve their competencies. However, the need to understand the effects of the workplace changes remain, especially in the case of human robot collaboration, due to the dynamic nature of human robot interaction.
A literature review was performed, initially, to map the effects of workplace changes on operators and their capabilities. Operators need to perform tasks in a complex environment in collaboration with robots, receive information from sensors or other means (e.g. through augmented reality glasses) and decide whether to act upon them. Meanwhile, operators need to maintain their productivity and performance. This affects cognitive load and fatigue, which increases safety risks and probability of human-system error. A model for error probability was formulated and tested in collaborative scenarios, which regards the operators as natural systems in the workplace environment, taking into account their condition based on four macro states; behavioural, mental, physical and psychosocial. A scoping review was then performed to investigate the robot design features effects on operators in the human robot interaction system. Here, the outcomes of robot design features effects on operators were mapped and potential guidelines for design purposes were identified. The results of the scoping review showed that, apart from cognitive load, operators perception on robots reliability and their safety, along with comfort can influence team cohesion and quality in the human robot interaction system.
From the findings of the reviews, an experimental study was designed with the support of the industrial partner. The main hypothesis was that cognitive load, due to collaboration, is correlated with quality of product, process and human work. In this experimental study, participants had to perform two tasks; a collaborative assembly and a secondary manual assembly. Perceived task complexity and cognitive load were measured through questionnaires, and quality was measured through errors participants made during the experiment. Evaluation results showed that while collaboration had positive influence in performing the tasks, cognitive load increased and the temporal factor was the main reason behind the issues participants faced, as it slowed task management and decision making of participants. Potential solutions were identified that can be applied to industrial settings, such as involving participants/operators in the task and workplace design phase, sufficient training with their robot co-worker to learn the task procedures and implement direct communication methods between operator and robot for efficient collaboration
