Brain Drain: The Mere Presence of Oneâs Own Smartphone Reduces Available Cognitive Capacity
Our smartphones enableâand encourageâconstant connection to information, entertainment, and
each other. They put the world at our fingertips, and rarely leave our sides. Although these devices have immense potential
to improve welfare, their persistent presence may come at a cognitive cost. In this research, we test the âbrain
drainâ hypothesis that the mere presence of oneâs own smartphone may occupy limited-capacity cognitive resources,
thereby leaving fewer resources available for other tasks and undercutting cognitive performance. Results from two
experiments indicate that even when people are successful at maintaining sustained attentionâas when avoiding
the temptation to check their phonesâthe mere presence of these devices reduces available cognitive capacity. Moreover,
these cognitive costs are highest for those highest in smartphone dependence. We conclude by discussing the
practical implications of this smartphone-induced brain drain for consumer decision-making and consumer welfare.Marketin
A Cooperative Emergency Navigation Framework using Mobile Cloud Computing
The use of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for emergency navigation systems
suffer disadvantages such as limited computing capacity, restricted battery
power and high likelihood of malfunction due to the harsh physical environment.
By making use of the powerful sensing ability of smart phones, this paper
presents a cloud-enabled emergency navigation framework to guide evacuees in a
coordinated manner and improve the reliability and resilience in both
communication and localization. By using social potential fields (SPF),
evacuees form clusters during an evacuation process and are directed to
egresses with the aid of a Cognitive Packet Networks (CPN) based algorithm.
Rather than just rely on the conventional telecommunications infrastructures,
we suggest an Ad hoc Cognitive Packet Network (AHCPN) based protocol to prolong
the life time of smart phones, that adaptively searches optimal communication
routes between portable devices and the egress node that provides access to a
cloud server with respect to the remaining battery power of smart phones and

Fall prevention intervention technologies: A conceptual framework and survey of the state of the art
In recent years, an ever increasing range of technology-based applications have been developed with the goal of assisting in the delivery of more effective and efficient fall prevention interventions. Whilst there have been a number of studies that have surveyed technologies for a particular sub-domain of fall prevention, there is no existing research which surveys the full spectrum of falls prevention interventions and characterises the range of technologies that have augmented this landscape. This study presents a conceptual framework and survey of the state of the art of technology-based fall prevention systems which is derived from a systematic template analysis of studies presented in contemporary research literature. The framework proposes four broad categories of fall prevention intervention system: Pre-fall prevention; Post-fall prevention; Fall injury prevention; Cross-fall prevention. Other categories include, Application type, Technology deployment platform, Information sources, Deployment environment, User interface type, and Collaborative function. After presenting the conceptual framework, a detailed survey of the state of the art is presented as a function of the proposed framework. A number of research challenges emerge as a result of surveying the research literature, which include a need for: new systems that focus on overcoming extrinsic falls risk factors; systems that support the environmental risk assessment process; systems that enable patients and practitioners to develop more collaborative relationships and engage in shared decision making during falls risk assessment and prevention activities. Cloud Enabled Emergency Navigation Using Faster-than-real-time Simulation
State-of-the-art emergency navigation approaches are designed to evacuate
civilians during a disaster based on real-time decisions using a pre-defined
algorithm and live sensory data. Hence, casualties caused by the poor decisions
and guidance are only apparent at the end of the evacuation process and cannot
then be remedied. Previous research shows that the performance of routing
algorithms for evacuation purposes are sensitive to the initial distribution of
evacuees, the occupancy levels, the type of disaster and its as well its
locations. Thus an algorithm that performs well in one scenario may achieve bad
results in another scenario. This problem is especially serious in
heuristic-based routing algorithms for evacuees where results are affected by
the choice of certain parameters. Therefore, this paper proposes a
simulation-based evacuee routing algorithm that optimises evacuation by making
use of the high computational power of cloud servers. Rather than guiding
evacuees with a predetermined routing algorithm, a robust Cognitive Packet
Network based algorithm is first evaluated via a cloud-based simulator in a
faster-than-real-time manner, and any "simulated casualties" are then re-routed
using a variant of Dijkstra's algorithm to obtain new safe paths for them to
exits. This approach can be iterated as long as corrective action is still

A Data Fusion System to Study Synchronization in Social Activities
As the world population gets older, the healthcare system must be adapted,
among others by providing continuous health monitoring at home and in the city.
The social activities have a significant role in everyone health status. Hence,
this paper proposes a system to perform a data fusion of signals sampled on
several subjects during social activities. This study implies the time
synchronization of data coming from several sensors whether these are embedded
on people or integrated in the environment. The data fusion is applied to
several experiments including physical, cognitive and rest activities, with
social aspects. The simultaneous and continuous analysis of four subjects
cardiac activity and GPS coordinates provides a new way to distinguish
different collaborative activities comparing the measurements between the

Enabling pervasive computing with smart phones
The authors discuss their experience with a number of mobile telephony projects carried out in the context of the European Union Information Society Technologies research program, which aims to develop mobile information services. They identify areas where use of smart phones can enable pervasive computing and offer practical advice in terms of lessons learned. To this end, they first look at the mobile telephone as * the end point of a mobile information service,* the control device for ubiquitous systems management and configuration,* the networking hub for personal and body area networks, and* identification tokens.They conclude with a discussion of business and practical issues that play a significant role in deploying research systems in realistic situations
QoE Modelling, Measurement and Prediction: A Review
In mobile computing systems, users can access network services anywhere and
anytime using mobile devices such as tablets and smart phones. These devices
connect to the Internet via network or telecommunications operators. Users
usually have some expectations about the services provided to them by different
operators. Users' expectations along with additional factors such as cognitive
and behavioural states, cost, and network quality of service (QoS) may
determine their quality of experience (QoE). If users are not satisfied with
their QoE, they may switch to different providers or may stop using a
particular application or service. Thus, QoE measurement and prediction
techniques may benefit users in availing personalized services from service
providers. On the other hand, it can help service providers to achieve lower
user-operator switchover. This paper presents a review of the state-the-art
research in the area of QoE modelling, measurement and prediction. In
particular, we investigate and discuss the strengths and shortcomings of
existing techniques. Finally, we present future research directions for

Cell phones have become one of the requirements for the wider community. Today all people in the world can be connected by a modern communication tool that is supported by the development of sophisticated media and modern communication. One of the media such as the mobile phone is now better known as "smart phones". The rise of smart phone usage among teens sparked a wide range of issues related to individual behavior and social behavior of adolescents themselves. This study used a qualitative approach with descriptive type. The technique of collecting data was taken with a total sampling was 28 people. The data collection techniques used was observation, interviews and focus group discussion. Data were analyzed through several stages: among other subjects through testing credibility, authenticity, triangulation analysis, and intersubjectivity analysis. From the research that has been conducted showed that the use of smart phones in adolescents can meet their needs. Fulfillment of requirements obtained from the use of smart phones in the range of cognitive needs, affective needs, personal integrative needs and requirements as well as the social integrative needs to release tension. Fulfillment of various needs in the above cause a variety of effects, both positive and negative.
