    Get PDF
This paper investigates the effects of the Cyclic Delay Diversity (CDD) transmit diversity scheme on DVB-H networks. Transmit diversity improves reception and Quality of Service (QoS) in areas of poor coverage such as sparsely populated or obscured locations. The technique not only povides robust reception in mobile environments thus improving QoS, but it also reduces network costs in terms of the transmit power, number of infrastructure elements, antenna height and the frequency reuse factor over indoor and outdoor environments. In this paper, the benefit and effectiveness of CDD transmit diversity is tackled through simulation results for comparison in several scenarios of coverage in DVB-H networks. The channel model used in the simulations is based on COST207 and a basic radio planning technique is used to illustrate the main principles developed in this paper. The work reported in this paper was supported by the European Commission IST project—PLUTO (Physical Layer DVB Transmission Optimization)

[EN] The first generation of Terrestrial Digital Television(DTV) has been in service for over a decade. In 2013, several countries have already completed the transition from Analog to Digital TV Broadcasting, most of which in Europe. In South America, after several studies and trials, Brazil adopted the Japanese standard with some innovations. Japan and Brazil started Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting (DTTB) services in December 2003 and December 2007 respectively, using Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting - Terrestrial (ISDB-T), also known as ARIB STD-B31. In June 2005 the Committee for the Information Technology Area (CATI) of Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology and Innovation MCTI approved the incorporation of the IC-Brazil Program, in the National Program for Microelectronics (PNM) . The main goals of IC-Brazil are the formal qualification of IC designers, support to the creation of semiconductors companies focused on projects of ICs within Brazil, and the attraction of semiconductors companies focused on the design and development of ICs in Brazil. The work presented in this thesis originated from the unique momentum created by the combination of the birth of Digital Television in Brazil and the creation of the IC-Brazil Program by the Brazilian government. Without this combination it would not have been possible to make these kind of projects in Brazil. These projects have been a long and costly journey, albeit scientifically and technologically worthy, towards a Brazilian DTV state-of-the-art low complexity Integrated Circuit, with good economy scale perspectives, due to the fact that at the beginning of this project ISDB-T standard was not adopted by several countries like DVB-T. During the development of the ISDB-T receiver proposed in this thesis, it was realized that due to the continental dimensions of Brazil, the DTTB would not be enough to cover the entire country with open DTV signal, specially for the case of remote localizations far from the high urban density regions. Then, Eldorado Research Institute and Idea! Electronic Systems, foresaw that, in a near future, there would be an open distribution system for high definition DTV over satellite, in Brazil. Based on that, it was decided by Eldorado Research Institute, that would be necessary to create a new ASIC for broadcast satellite reception. At that time DVB-S2 standard was the strongest candidate for that, and this assumption still stands nowadays. Therefore, it was decided to apply to a new round of resources funding from the MCTI - that was granted - in order to start the new project. This thesis discusses in details the Architecture and Algorithms proposed for the implementation of a low complexity Intermediate Frequency(IF) ISDB-T Receiver on Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) CMOS. The Architecture proposed here is highly based on the COordinate Rotation Digital Computer (CORDIC) Algorithm, that is a simple and efficient algorithm suitable for VLSI implementations. The receiver copes with the impairments inherent to wireless channels transmission and the receiver crystals. The thesis also discusses the Methodology adopted and presents the implementation results. The receiver performance is presented and compared to those obtained by means of simulations. Furthermore, the thesis also presents the Architecture and Algorithms for a DVB-S2 receiver targeting its ASIC implementation. However, unlike the ISDB-T receiver, only preliminary ASIC implementation results are introduced. This was mainly done in order to have an early estimation of die area to prove that the project in ASIC is economically viable, as well as to verify possible bugs in early stage. As in the case of ISDB-T receiver, this receiver is highly based on CORDIC algorithm and it was prototyped in FPGA. The Methodology used for the second receiver is derived from that used for the ISDB-T receiver, with minor additions given the project characteristics.[ES] La primera generación de Televisión Digital Terrestre(DTV) ha estado en servicio por más de una década. This PhD dissertation analyzes the performance of second generation digital video broadcasting (DVB) systems in mobile terrestrial environments and proposes an iterative detection algorithm based on factor graphs (FG) to reduce the distortion caused by the time variation of the channel, providing error-free communication in very severe mobile conditions. The research work focuses on mobile scenarios where the intercarrier interference (ICI) is very high: high vehicular speeds when long orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) blocks are used. As a starting point, we provide the theoretical background on the main topics behind the transmission and reception of terrestrial digital television signals in mobile environments, along with a general overview of the main signal processing techniques included in last generation terrestrial DVB systems. The proposed FG-based detector design is then assessed over a simpli ed bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM)-OFDM communication scheme for a wide variety of mobile environments. Extensive simulation results show the e ectiveness of the proposed belief propagation (BP) algorithm over the channels of interest in this research work. Moreover, assuming that low density parity-check (LDPC) codes are decoded by means of FG-based algorithms, a high-order FG is de ned in order to accomplish joint signal detection and decoding into the same FG framework, o ering a fully parallel structure very suitable when long OFDM blocks are employed. Finally, the proposed algorithms are analyzed over the physical layer of DVB-T2 speci cation. Two reception schemes are proposed which exploit the frequency and time-diversity inherent in time-varying channels with the aim of achieving a reasonable trade-o among performance, complexity and latency.Doktoretza tesi honek bigarren belaunaldiko telebista digitalaren eraginkortasuna aztertzen du eskenatoki mugikorrean, eta faktoreen grafoetan oinarritzen den hartzaile iteratibo bat proposatzen du denboran aldakorra den kanalak sortzen duen distortsioa leundu eta seinalea errorerik gabe hartzea ahalbidetzen duena. Design and Implementation of Belief Propagation Symbol Detectors for Wireless Intersymbol Interference Channels

In modern wireless communication systems, intersymbol interference (ISI) introduced by frequency selective fading is one of the major impairments to reliable data communication. In ISI channels, the receiver observes the superposition of multiple delayed reflections of the transmitted signal, which will result errors in the decision device. As the data rate increases, the effect of ISI becomes severe. To combat ISI, equalization is usually required for symbol detectors. The optimal maximum-likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) based on the Viterbi algorithm (VA) may be used to estimate the transmitted sequence in the presence of the ISI. However, the computational complexity of the MLSE increases exponentially with the length of the channel impulse response (CIR). Even in channels which do not exhibit significant time dispersion, the length of the CIR will effectively increase as the sampling rate goes higher. Thus the optimal MLSE is impractical to implement in the majority of practical wireless applications. This dissertation is devoted to exploring practically implementable symbol detectors with near-optimal performance in wireless ISI channels. Particularly, we focus on the design and implementation of an iterative detector based on the belief propagation (BP) algorithm. The advantage of the BP detector is that its complexity is solely dependent on the number of nonzero coefficients in the CIR, instead of the length of the CIR. We also extend the work of BP detector design for various wireless applications. Firstly, we present a partial response BP (PRBP) symbol detector with near-optimal performance for channels which have long spanning durations but sparse multipath structure. We implement the architecture by cascading an adaptive linear equalizer (LE) with a BP detector. The channel is first partially equalized by the LE to a target impulse response (TIR) with only a few nonzero coefficients remaining. The residual ISI is then canceled by a more sophisticated BP detector. With the cascaded LE-BP structure, the symbol detector is capable to achieve a near-optimal error rate performance with acceptable implementation complexity. Moreover, we present a pipeline high-throughput implementation of the detector for channel length 30 with quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) modulation. The detector can achieve a maximum throughput of 206 Mb/s with an estimated core area of 3.162 mm^{2} using 90-nm technology node. At a target frequency of 515 MHz, the dynamic power is about 1.096 W. Secondly, we investigate the performance of aforementioned PRBP detector under a more generic 3G channel rather than the sparse channel. Another suboptimal partial response maximum-likelihood (PRML) detector is considered for comparison. Similar to the PRBP detector, the PRML detector also employs a hybrid two-stage scheme, in order to allow a tradeoff between performance and complexity. In simulations, we consider a slow fading environment and use the ITU-R 3G channel models. From the numerical results, it is shown that in frequency-selective fading wireless channels, the PRBP detector provides superior performance over both the traditional minimum mean squared error linear equalizer (MMSE-LE) and the PRML detector. Due to the effect of colored noise, the PRML detector in fading wireless channels is not as effective as it is in magnetic recording applications. Thirdly, we extend our work to accommodate the application of Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) digital television (DTV) systems. In order to reduce error propagation caused by the traditional decision feedback equalizer (DFE) in DTV receiver, we present an adaptive decision feedback sparsening filter BP (DFSF-BP) detector, which is another form of PRBP detector. Different from the aforementioned LE-BP structure, in the DFSF-BP scheme, the BP detector is followed by a nonlinear filter called DFSF as the partial response equalizer. In the first stage, the DFSF employs a modified feedback filter which leaves the strongest post-cursor ISI taps uncorrected. As a result, a long ISI channel is equalized to a sparse channel having only a small number of nonzero taps. In the second stage, the BP detector is applied to mitigate the residual ISI. Since the channel is typically time-varying and suffers from Doppler fading, the DFSF is adapted using the least mean square (LMS) algorithm, such that the amplitude and the locations of the nonzero taps of the equalized sparse channel appear to be fixed. As such, the channel appears to be static during the second stage of equalization which consists of the BP detector. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms the traditional DFE in symbol error rate, under both static channels and dynamic ATSC channels. Finally, we study the symbol detector design for cooperative communications, which have attracted a lot of attention recently for its ability to exploit increased spatial diversity available at distributed antennas on other nodes. A system framework employing non-orthogonal amplify-and-forward half-duplex relays through ISI channels is developed. Based on the system model, we first design and implement an optimal maximum-likelihood detector based on the Viterbi algorithm. As the relay period increases, the effective CIR between the source and the destination becomes long and sparse, which makes the optimal detector impractical to implement. In order to achieve a balance between the computational complexity and performance, several sub-optimal detectors are proposed. We first present a multitrellis Viterbi algorithm (MVA) based detector which decomposes the original trellis into multiple parallel irregular sub-trellises by investigating the dependencies between the received symbols. Although MVA provides near-optimal performance, it is not straightforward to decompose the trellis for arbitrary ISI channels. Next, the decision feedback sequence estimation (DFSE) based detector and BP-based detector are proposed for cooperative ISI channels. Traditionally these two detectors are used with fixed, static channels. In our model, however, the effective channel is periodically time-varying, even when the component channels themselves are static. Consequently, we modify these two detector to account for cooperative ISI channels. Through simulations in frequency selective fading channels, we demonstrate the uncoded performance of the DFSE detector and the BP detector when compared to the optimal MLSE detector. In addition to quantifying the performance of these detectors, we also include an analysis of the implementation complexity as well as a discussion on complexity/performance tradeoffs

An Innovative Signal Detection Algorithm in Facilitating the Cognitive Radio Functionality for Wireless Regional Area Network Using Singular Value Decomposition

This thesis introduces an innovative signal detector algorithm in facilitating the cognitive radio functionality for the new IEEE 802.22 Wireless Regional Area Networks (WRAN) standard. It is a signal detector based on a Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) technique that utilizes the eigenvalue of a received signal. The research started with a review of the current spectrum sensing methods which the research classifies as the specific, semiblind or blind signal detector. A blind signal detector, which is known as eigenvalue based detection, was found to be the most desired detector for its detection capabilities, time of execution, and zero a-priori knowledge. The detection algorithm was developed analytically by applying the Signal Detection Theory (SDT) and the Random Matrix Theory (RMT). It was then simulated using Matlab® to test its performance and compared with similar eigenvalue based signal detector. There are several techniques in finding eigenvalues. However, this research considered two techniques known as eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) and SVD. The research tested the algorithm with a randomly generated signal, simulated Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial (DVB-T) standard and real captured digital television signals based on the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) standard. The SVD based signal detector was found to be more efficient in detecting signals without knowing the properties of the transmitted signal. The algorithm is suitable for the blind spectrum sensing where the properties of the signal to be detected are unknown. This is also the advantage of the algorithm since any signal would interfere and subsequently affect the quality of service (QoS) of the IEEE 802.22 connection. Furthermore, the algorithm performed better in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) environment. In order to use the algorithm effectively, users need to balance between detection accuracy and execution time. It was found that a higher number of samples would lead to more accurate detection, but will take longer time. In contrary, fewer numbers of samples used would result in less accuracy, but faster execution time. The contributions of this thesis are expected to assist the IEEE 802.22 Standard Working Group, regulatory bodies, network operators and end-users in bringing broadband access to the rural areas

Solutions for New Terrestrial Broadcasting Systems Offering Simultaneously Stationary and Mobile Services

221 p.[EN]Since the first broadcasted TV signal was transmitted in the early decades of the past century, the television broadcasting industry has experienced a series of dramatic changes. Most recently, following the evolution from analogue to digital systems, the digital dividend has become one of the main concerns of the broadcasting industry. In fact, there are many international spectrum authorities reclaiming part of the broadcasting spectrum to satisfy the growing demand of other services, such as broadband wireless services, arguing that the TV services are not very spectrum-efficient. Apart from that, it must be taken into account that, even if up to now the mobile broadcasting has not been considered a major requirement, this will probably change in the near future. In fact, it is expected that the global mobile data traffic will increase 11-fold between 2014 and 2018, and what is more, over two thirds of the data traffic will be video stream by the end of that period. Therefore, the capability to receive HD services anywhere with a mobile device is going to be a mandatory requirement for any new generation broadcasting system. The main objective of this work is to present several technical solutions that answer to these challenges. In particular, the main questions to be solved are the spectrum efficiency issue and the increasing user expectations of receiving high quality mobile services. In other words, the main objective is to provide technical solutions for an efficient and flexible usage of the terrestrial broadcasting spectrum for both stationary and mobile services. The first contributions of this scientific work are closely related to the study of the mobile broadcast reception. Firstly, a comprehensive mathematical analysis of the OFDM signal behaviour over time-varying channels is presented. In order to maximize the channel capacity in mobile environments, channel estimation and equalization are studied in depth. First, the most implemented equalization solutions in time-varying scenarios are analyzed, and then, based on these existing techniques, a new equalization algorithm is proposed for enhancing the receivers’ performance. An alternative solution for improving the efficiency under mobile channel conditions is treating the Inter Carrier Interference as another noise source. Specifically, after analyzing the ICI impact and the existing solutions for reducing the ICI penalty, a new approach based on the robustness of FEC codes is presented. This new approach employs one dimensional algorithms at the receiver and entrusts the ICI removing task to the robust forward error correction codes. Finally, another major contribution of this work is the presentation of the Layer Division Multiplexing (LDM) as a spectrum-efficient and flexible solution for offering stationary and mobile services simultaneously. The comprehensive theoretical study developed here verifies the improved spectrum efficiency, whereas the included practical validation confirms the feasibility of the system and presents it as a very promising multiplexing technique, which will surely be a strong candidate for the next generation broadcasting services.[ES]Desde el comienzo de la transmisión de las primeras señales de televisión a principios del siglo pasado, la radiodifusión digital ha evolucionado gracias a una serie de cambios relevantes.

Detection and decoding algorithms of multi-antenna diversity techniques for terrestrial DVB systems

This PhD dissertation analyzes the behavior of multi-antenna diversity techniques in broadcasting scenarios of TDT (terrestrial digital television) systems and proposes a low-complexity detection and decoding design for their practical implementation. For that purpose, the transmission-reception chains of the European DVB-T (Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial) and DVB-T2 standards have been implemented over which diversity and MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) techniques have been assessed through Monte Carlo simulations. On one hand, the most important multi-antenna diversity techniques such as CDD (cyclic delay diversity), Alamouti code-based SFBC (space-frequency block coding) and MRC (maximum ratio combining), have been evaluated in a DVB-T system over both fixed and mobile Rayleigh and Ricean channels. With the DVB-T2 standard release, multi-antenna processing has actually been introduced in digital television systems. The distributed SFBC configuration proposed in DVB-T2 is analyzed from a performance point of view considering different propagation conditions in an SFN (single frequency network). On the other hand, error-performance and detection complexity analyses of 2x2 FRFD (full-rate full-diversity) SFBCs are carried out for last-generation DTV (digital television) systems. The use of channel coding based on LDPC (low-density parity check) codes in new standards such as DVB-T2, involves a soft-output MAP (maximum a posteriori ) detection which results in an increase of the detection complexity. In order to study the FRFD codes behavior in such a BICM (bit-interleaved coded modulation) scheme, the Golden code, which achieves the maximum coding gain, and the Sezginer-Sari code, which has a lower inherent detection complexity as an expense of sacrificing performance gain, have been chosen. Using LSD (list sphere decoder) detection, BER (bit error rate) performance and computational cost results are provided for TDT scenarios. In order to overcome the variable complexity of the LSD, LFSD (list fixed-complexity sphere decoder) detection is proposed for practical implementations. A redesign of the previously proposed LFSD algorithm for spatial multiplexing MIMO systems has been performed for FRFD SFBCs with close-to-LSD performance. Furthermore, an analysis of the number of candidates is carried out in order to maximize the eficiency of the algorithm. Due to its fixed complexity, the novel algorithm can be fully pipelined making feasible a realistic implementation in chip. Doktoretza-tesi honen gai nagusia Lurreko Telebista Digitalerako antena anitzeko dibertsitate tekniken portaera ikertzea da, hartzailerako konplexutasun baxuko algoritmoen diseinua oinarri hartuta. However, some coverage areas in SFN can be affected by destructive interferences. In order to reduce these situations, distributed multiple-input single-output (MISO) schemes have been adopted in the new digital terrestrial television standards, Alamouti in DVB-T2 and transmit diversity code filter sets in ATSC 3.0. On the other hand, layered division multiplexing (LDM), a non-orthogonal multiple access technology, has been adopted in ATSC 3.0 due to its spectral efficiency increase compared to time or frequency division multiplexing. The LDM signal is formed by a power superposition of two independent signals, which are designed for different reception conditions (mobile and fixed-rooftop). The combination of distributed MISO and LDM techniques has not been evaluated yet. In this paper, the joint transmission of LDM with distributed MISO is analyzed in terms of complexity and the joint performance is evaluated by means of physical layer simulations. This work was supported in part by the ICT Research and Development Program of MSIP/IITP (Development of Transmission Technology for Ultra High Quality UHD) under Grant 2017-0-00081, and in part by the Ministerio de Educacion y Ciencia, Spain, through European FEDER funds under Grant TEC2014-56483-R.Garro, E.; Barjau, C.; Gomez-Barquero, D.; Kim, J.; Park, S.; Hur, N. This processing is achieved using all-pass linear filters, allowing the resulting combination of predistortion and multipath to be properly compensated as part of the equalization process in the receiver. The filter design utilizes an iterative computational approach, which minimizes cross-correlation peak side lobe under the constraints of number of transmitters and delay spread, allowing customization for specific network configurations. This paper provides an overview of the TDCFS multiple-input single output antenna scheme adopted in ATSC 3.0, together with experimental analysis of capacity and specific worst-case conditions that illustrate the benefits of using the TDCFS approach.Lopresto, S.; Citta, R.; Vargas, D.; Gómez Barquero, D. Positioning in urban or indoor environment is a hot topic, either due to regulations such as the E911 requiring US mobile telecommunication operators to be able to locate their subscribers in case of emergency, or due to the market development, with the extension of location - based services targeting the mass market concentrated in metropolitan areas. In urban or indoor areas, it is generally recognized that satellite - based positioning systems are not suitable (alone) to provide a continuous, reliable and accurate position to the user. Therefore, alternative positioning techniques may be useful to complement or replace satellite positioning in these environments. This PhD study ha s studied the possibility of using a mobile TV system based on the DVB - SH standard as system of opportunity for positioning. The advantage s of using a DVB - SH system for positioning are multiple. First, such system has a good availability in metropolitan areas, including indoor. Secondly, the emitters are synchronized and their density should be sufficient to track signals from several emitters simultaneously. This opens the possibility of using timing measurements from several emitters to find a position by trilateration . Also, the large bandwidth of the TV signal, required for the transmission of video content, should be beneficial for the accuracy of the timing measurements and for the robustness against multipath . Therefore, DVB - SH system seems to be an interesting candidate as system of opportunity for positioning. However, several challenges are to be solved for such a solution to be relevant. First, the signals propagate in the urban environment, which creates challenging conditions for positioning su ch as strong power fading, blockage of the desired line - of - sight signal or large echoes. Secondly, the DVB - SH standard uses an OFDM modulation, which has not been studied for positioning purpose. Therefore, techniques for fine tracking of the first receive d signal replica will have to be developed. Finally, a particularity of modern broadcast system is the use of a Single Frequency Network, in which all emitters send the same signal on the same carrier frequency. Therefore emitter identification in a Single Frequency will be another issue to be solved. This PhD study has proved the feasibility of positioning using DVB - SH signals. The main contributions of this work are the propositions of (1) an OFDM signal delay tracking method working in urban propagation channels, and (2) a modification to the network deployment permitting emitter identification and (3) a first assessment of the position accuracy using the proposed algorithms. These two methods have very low impact on the initial TV broadcasting service if the right set of signal parameters is chosen: no signal modification is required and the network deployment modification uses a feature already present in the DVB - SH standard. The positioning method was simulated using real urban propagation channel measurements. The obtained position has root mean square error of 4 0m. The main error contribution comes from tracking a non - line - of - sight signal. Further work would be required to deal with this issue, which would lower the position root mean square error to 7 m, which has been locally observed in the simulation for good tracking conditionsLe positionnement en environnement urbain est un domaine de recherche actif, de par la croissance des services grand public liées à la localisation, et à cause de réglementations émergentes liées aux situations d'urgence (E911).
