    Speech Transmission Index from running speech : a neural network approach

    Speech Transmission Index (STI) is an important objective parameter concerning speech intelligibility for sound transmission channels. It is normally measured with specific test signals to ensure high accuracy and good repeatability. Measurement with running speech was previously proposed, but accuracy is compromised and hence applications limited. A new approach that uses artificial neural networks to accurately extract the STI from received running speech is developed in this paper. Neural networks are trained on a large set of transmitted speech examples with prior knowledge of the transmission channels' STIs. The networks perform complicated nonlinear function mappings and spectral feature memorization to enable accurate objective parameter extraction from transmitted speech. Validations via simulations demonstrate the feasibility of this new method on a one-net-one-speech extract basis. In this case, accuracy is comparable with normal measurement methods. This provides an alternative to standard measurement techniques, and it is intended that the neural network method can facilitate occupied room acoustic measurements

    The status of the joint NASA/Rockwell Active Flexible Wing Wind-Tunnel Test Program is described. The objectives are to develop and validate the analysis, design, and test methodologies required to apply multifunction active control technology for improving aircraft performance and stability. Major tasks include designing digital multi-input/multi-output flutter-suppression and rolling-maneuver-load alleviation concepts for a flexible full-span wind-tunnel model, obtaining an experimental data base for the basic model and each control concept and providing comparisons between experimental and analytical results to validate the methodologies. The opportunity is provided to improve real-time simulation techniques and to gain practical experience with digital control law implementation procedures

    Intelligent failure-tolerant control

    An overview of failure-tolerant control is presented, beginning with robust control, progressing through parallel and analytical redundancy, and ending with rule-based systems and artificial neural networks. By design or implementation, failure-tolerant control systems are 'intelligent' systems. All failure-tolerant systems require some degrees of robustness to protect against catastrophic failure; failure tolerance often can be improved by adaptivity in decision-making and control, as well as by redundancy in measurement and actuation. Reliability, maintainability, and survivability can be enhanced by failure tolerance, although each objective poses different goals for control system design. Artificial intelligence concepts are helpful for integrating and codifying failure-tolerant control systems, not as alternatives but as adjuncts to conventional design methods

    Robust Decentralized Secondary Frequency Control in Power Systems: Merits and Trade-Offs

    Frequency restoration in power systems is conventionally performed by broadcasting a centralized signal to local controllers. As a result of the energy transition, technological advances, and the scientific interest in distributed control and optimization methods, a plethora of distributed frequency control strategies have been proposed recently that rely on communication amongst local controllers. In this paper we propose a fully decentralized leaky integral controller for frequency restoration that is derived from a classic lag element. We study steady-state, asymptotic optimality, nominal stability, input-to-state stability, noise rejection, transient performance, and robustness properties of this controller in closed loop with a nonlinear and multivariable power system model. We demonstrate that the leaky integral controller can strike an acceptable trade-off between performance and robustness as well as between asymptotic disturbance rejection and transient convergence rate by tuning its DC gain and time constant. We compare our findings to conventional decentralized integral control and distributed-averaging-based integral control in theory and simulations

    The Space Engineering Research Center (SERC) at MIT, started in Jul. 1988, has completed two years of research. The Center is approaching the operational phase of its first testbed, is midway through the construction of a second testbed, and is in the design phase of a third. We presently have seven participating faculty, four participating staff members, ten graduate students, and numerous undergraduates. This report reviews the testbed programs, individual graduate research, other SERC activities not funded by the Center, interaction with non-MIT organizations, and SERC milestones. Published papers made possible by SERC funding are included at the end of the report

    Generation of linear dynamic models from a digital nonlinear simulation

    The results and methodology used to derive linear models from a nonlinear simulation are presented. It is shown that averaged positive and negative perturbations in the state variables can reduce numerical errors in finite difference, partial derivative approximations and, in the control inputs, can better approximate the system response in both directions about the operating point. Both explicit and implicit formulations are addressed. Linear models are derived for the F 100 engine, and comparisons of transients are made with the nonlinear simulation. The problem of startup transients in the nonlinear simulation in making these comparisons is addressed. Also, reduction of the linear models is investigated using the modal and normal techniques. Reduced-order models of the F 100 are derived and compared with the full-state models

    Innovative system identification methods for monitoring applications

    Monitoring the modal parameters of civil and mechanical system received plenty of interest the last decades. Several approaches have been proposed and successfully applied in civil engineering for structural health monitoring of bridges (mainly based on the monitoring of the resonant frequencies and mode shapes). In applications such as the monitoring of offshore wind turbines and flight flutter testing the monitoring of the damping ratios are essential. For offshore wind turbine monitoring the presence of time-varying harmonic components, close to the modes of interest, can complicate the identification process. The difficulty related to flight flutter testing is that, in general, only short data records are available. The aim of this contribution is to introduce system identification methods and monitoring strategies that result in more reliable decisions and that can cope with complex monitoring applications. Basic concepts of system identification will be recapitulated with attention for monitoring aspects. The proposed monitoring methodology is based on the recently introduced Transmissibility-based Operational Modal Analysis (TOMA) approach

    Beyond power laws: Universality in the average avalanche shape

    We report the measurement of multivariable scaling functions for the temporal average shape of Barkhausen noise avalanches, and show that they are consistent with the predictions of simple mean-field theories. We bypass the confounding factors of time-retarded interactions (eddy currents) by measuring thin permal- loy films, and bypass thresholding effects and amplifier distortions by applying Wiener deconvolution. We find experimental shapes that are approximately symmetric, and track the evolution of the scaling function. We solve a mean- field theory for the magnetization dynamics and calculate the form of the scaling function in the presence of a demagnetizing field and a finite field ramp-rate, yielding quantitative agreement with the experiment.Comment: 13 pages, 14 figure
