    An automatic controller tuning algorithm.

    A project report submitted to the Faculty of Engineering, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for 'the degree of Master of Science in Engineering. Johannesburg 1991.The report describes the design of an algorithm which can be used for automatic controller tuning purposes. It uses an on-line parameter estimator and a pole assignrnent design method. The resulting control law is formulated to approximate a proportional-integral (PI) industrial controller. The development ofthe algorithm is based on the delta-operator, Some implementation aspects such as covariance resetting, dead zone, and signal conditioning are also discussed. Robust stability and performance are two issues that govern the design approach. Additionally transient and steady state system response criteria are utilized from the time and frequency domains. The design work is substantiated with the use of simulation and real plant tests.AC201

    Control-Structure-Interaction (CSI) technologies and trends to future NASA missions

    Control-structure-interaction (CSI) issues which are relevant for future NASA missions are reviewed. This goal was achieved by: (1) reviewing large space structures (LSS) technologies to provide a background and survey of the current state of the art (SOA); (2) analytically studying a focus mission to identify opportunities where CSI technology may be applied to enhance or enable future NASA spacecraft; and (3) expanding a portion of the focus mission, the large antenna, to provide in-depth trade studies, scaling laws, and methodologies which may be applied to other NASA missions. Several sections are presented. Section 1 defines CSI issues and presents an overview of the relevant modeling and control issues for LLS. Section 2 presents the results of the three phases of the CSI study. Section 2.1 gives the results of a CSI study conducted with the Geostationary Platform (Geoplat) as the focus mission. Section 2.2 contains an overview of the CSI control design methodology available in the technical community. Included is a survey of the CSI ground-based experiments which were conducted to verify theoretical performance predictions. Section 2.3 presents and demonstrates a new CSI scaling law methodology for assessing potential CSI with large antenna systems

    Optimisation of time domain controllers for supply ships using genetic algorithms and genetic programming

    The use of genetic methods for the optimisation of propulsion and heading controllers for marine vessels is presented in this thesis. The first part of this work is a study of the optimisation, using Genetic Algorithms, of controller designs based on a number of different time-domain control methodologies such as PID, Sliding Mode, H8, and Pole Placement. These control methodologies are used to provide the structure for propulsion and navigation controllers for a ship. Given the variety in the number of parameters to optimise and the controller structures, the Genetic Algorithm is tested in different control optimisation problems with different search spaces. This study presents how the Genetic Algorithm solves this minimisation problem by evolving controller parameters solutions that satisfactorily perform control duties while keeping actuator usage to a minimum. A variety of genetic operators are introduced and a comparison study is conducted to find the Genetic Algorithm scheme best suited to the parameter controller optimisation problem. The performance of the four control methodologies is also compared. A variation of Genetic Algorithms, the Structured Genetic Algorithm, is also used for the optimisation of the H8 controller. The H8 controller optimisation presents the difficulty that the optimisation focus is not on parameters but on transfer functions. Structured Genetic Algorithm incorporates hierarchy in the representation of solutions making it very suitable for structural optimisation. The H8 optimisation problem has been found to be very appropriate for comparing the performance of Genetic Algorithms versus Structured Genetic Algorithm. During the second part of this work, the use of Genetic Programming to optimise the controller structure is assessed. Genetic Programming is used to evolve control strategies that, given as inputs the current and desired state of the propulsion and heading dynamics, generate the commanded forces required to manoeuvre the ship. Two Genetic Programming algorithms are implemented. The only difference between them is how they generate the numerical constants needed for the solution of the problem. The first approach uses a random generation of constants while the second approach uses a combination of Genetic Programming with Genetic Algorithms. Finally, the controllers optimised using genetic methods are evaluated through computer simulations and real manoeuvrability tests in a laboratory water basin facility

    Iterative Learning Control design for uncertain and time-windowed systems

    Iterative Learning Control (ILC) is a control strategy capable of dramatically increasing the performance of systems that perform batch repetitive tasks. This performance improvement is achieved by iteratively updating the command signal, using measured error data from previous trials, i.e., by learning from past experience. This thesis deals with ILC for time-windowed and uncertain systems. With the term "time-windowed systems", we mean systems in which actuation and measurement time intervals differ. With "uncertain systems", we refer to systems whose behavior is represented by incomplete or inaccurate models. To study the ILC design issues for time-windowed systems, we consider the task of residual vibration suppression in point-to-point motion problems. In this application, time windows are used to modify the original system to comply with the task. With the properties of the time-windowed system resulting in nonconverging behavior of the original ILC controlled system, we introduce a novel ILC design framework in which convergence can be achieved. Additionally, this framework reveals new design freedom in ILC for point-to-point motion problems, which is unknown in "standard" ILC. Theoretical results concerning the problem formulation and control design for these systems are supported by experimental results on a SISO and MIMO flexible structure. The analysis and design results of ILC for time-windowed systems are subsequently extended to the whole class of linear systems whose input and output are filtered with basis functions (which include time windows). Analysis and design theory of ILC for this class of systems reveals how different ILC objectives can be reached by design of separate parts of the ILC controller. Our research on ILC for uncertain systems is divided into two parts. In the first part, we formulate an approach to analyze the robustness properties of existing ILC controllers, using well developed µ theory. To exemplify our findings, we analyze the robustness properties of linear quadratic (LQ) norm optimal ILC controllers. Moreover, we show that the approach is applicable to the class of linear trial invariant ILC controlled systems with basis functions. In the second part, we present a finite time interval robust ILC control strategy that is robust against model uncertainty as given by an additive uncertainty model. For that, we exploit H1 control theory, however, modified such that the controller is not restricted to be causal and operates on a finite time interval. Furthermore, we optimize the robust controller so as to optimize performance while remaining robustly monotonically convergent. By means of experiments on a SISO flexible system, we show that this control strategy can indeed outperform LQ norm optimal ILC and causal robust ILC control strategies

    Study of numeric Saturation Effects in Linear Digital Compensators

    Saturation arithmetic is often used in finite precision digital compensators to circumvent instability due to radix overflow. The saturation limits in the digital structure lead to nonlinear behavior during large state transients. It is shown that if all recursive loops in a compensator are interrupted by at least one saturation limit, then there exists a bounded external scaling rule which assures against overflow at all nodes in the structure. Design methods are proposed based on the generalized second method of Lyapunov, which take the internal saturation limits into account to implement a robust dual-mode suboptimal control for bounded input plants. The saturating digital compensator provides linear regulation for small disturbances, and near-time-optimal control for large disturbances or changes in the operating point. Computer aided design tools are developed to facilitate the analysis and design of this class of digital compensators

    Táto práca sa zaoberá vývojom, testovaním a implementáciou adaptívneho riadiaceho systému pre dvojkolesové samobalancujúce vozidlo. Adaptácia parametrov vozidla sa uskutoční na základe parametrov vodiča. Parametre sústavy sa nemerajú priamo, ale sú odhadované na základe priebehu stavových premenných a odozvy sústavy. Medzi odhadované parametre patrí hmotnosť a poloha ťažiska vodiča. Cieľom práce je zabezpečiť adaptáciu jazdných vlastností vozidla k rôznym vodičom s rôznou hmotnosťou, kvôli zlepšeniu stability vozidla. Táto práca je pokračovaním predchádzajúcich projektov z roku 2011 a 2015.This thesis deals with development, verification and implementation of an adaptive control system on a two-wheeled self-balancing vehicle that based on the driver's parameters alters its behaviour. The parameters are not obtained by direct measurement but estimated based on the evolution of state variables and the system's response. The estimated parameters include driver's mass and height of his or her centre of gravity. The goal of this thesis is to verify the idea of an adaptation of the system's dynamical properties to different users while ensuring better stability. This thesis is the continuation of earlier projects finished in 2011 and 2015.
