    Interpretation of overtracing freehand sketching for geometric shapes

    This paper presents a novel method for interpreting overtracing freehand sketch. The overtracing strokes are interpreted as sketch content and are used to generate 2D geometric primitives. The approach consists of four stages: stroke classification, strokes grouping and fitting, 2D tidy-up with endpoint clustering and parallelism correction, and in-context interpretation. Strokes are first classified into lines and curves by a linearity test. It is followed by an innovative strokes grouping process that handles lines and curves separately. The grouped strokes are fitted with 2D geometry and further tidied-up with endpoint clustering and parallelism correction. Finally, the in-context interpretation is applied to detect incorrect stroke interpretation based on geometry constraints and to suggest a most plausible correction based on the overall sketch context. The interpretation ensures sketched strokes to be interpreted into meaningful output. The interface overcomes the limitation where only a single line drawing can be sketched out as in most existing sketching programs, meanwhile is more intuitive to the user

    A framework of web-based conceptual design

    A web-based conceptual design prototype system is presented. The system consists of four parts which interpret on-line sketches as 2D and 3D geometry, extract 3D hierarchical configurations, allow editing of component behaviours, and produce VRML-based behavioural simulations for design verification and web-based application. In the first part, on-line freehand sketched input is interpreted as 2D and 3D geometry, which geometrically represents conceptual design. The system then infers 3D configuration by analysing 3D modelling history. The configuration is described by a parent–child hierarchical relationship and relative positions between two geometric components. The positioning information is computed with respect to the VRML97 specification. In order to verify the conceptual design of a product, the behaviours can be specified interactively on different components. Finally, the system creates VRML97 formatted files for behavioural simulation and collaborative design application over the Internet. The paper gives examples of web-based applications. This work forms a part of a research project into the design and establishing of modular machines for automation manufacture.     Tolerance Zone-Based Grouping Method for Online Multiple Overtracing Freehand Sketches

    Multiple overtracing strokes are common drawing behaviors in freehand sketching; that is, additional strokes are often drawn repeatedly over the existing ones to add more details. This paper proposes a method based on stroke-tolerance zones to group multiple overtraced strokes which are drawn to express a 2D primitive, aiming to convert online freehand sketches into 2D line drawings, which is a base for further 3D reconstruction. Firstly, after the user inputs a new stroke, a tolerance zone around the stroke is constructed by reference to its polygonal approximation points obtained from the stroke preprocessing. Then, the input strokes are divided into stroke groups, each representing a primitive through the stroke grouping process based on the overtraced ratio of two strokes. At last, each stroke group is fitted into one or more 2D geometric primitives including line segments, polylines, ellipses, and arcs. The proposed method groups two strokes together based on their screen-space proximity directly instead of classifying and fitting them firstly, so that it can group strokes of arbitrary shapes. A sketch-recognition prototype system has been implemented to test the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results showed that the proposed method could support online multiple overtracing freehand sketching with no limitation on drawing sequence, but it only deals with strokes with relatively high overtraced ratio

    A cameraphone-based approach for the generation of 3D models from paper sketches

    Parts of the research work disclosed in this paper are subject to a pending patent application number 2130.Due to the advantages it offers, a sketch-based user-interface (UI) has been utilised in various domains, such as 3D modelling, 'graphical user-interface' design, 3D animation of cartoon characters, etc. However, its benefits have not yet been adequately exploited with those of a mobile phone, despite that the latter is nowadays a widely used wireless handheld device for mobile communication. Given this scenario, this paper discloses a novel approach of using a paper sketch-based UI, which combines the benefits of paper sketching and those of a cameraphone (a mobile phone with an integrated camera), in the domain of early form design modelling. More specifically, the framework disclosed and evaluated in this paper, enables users to remotely obtain visual representations of 3D geometric models from freehand sketches by combining the portability of paper with that of cameraphones. Based on this framework, a prototype tool has been implemented and evaluated. Despite the limitations of the current prototype tool, the evaluation results of the framework s underlying concepts and of the prototype tool collectively indicate that the idea disclosed in this paper contributes in providing users with a mobile sketch-based interface, which can also be used in other domains, beyond early form design modelling.peer-reviewe

    A conceptual design tool: a sketch and fuzzy logic based system

    Abstract: A real-time sketch and fuzzy logic based prototype system for conceptual design has been developed. This system comprises four phases. In the ® rst one, the system accepts the input of online free-hand sketches, and segments them into meaningful parts by using fuzzy knowledge to detect corners and in¯ection points on the sketched curves. The fuzzy knowledge is applied to capture user' s drawing intention in terms of sketching position, direction, speed and acceleration. During the second phase, each segmented subpart (curve) can be classi® ed and identi® ed as one of the following two-dimensional primitives: straight lines, circles, circular arcs, ellipses, elliptical arcs or B-spline curves. Then, two-dimensional topology information (connectivity, unitary constraints and pairwise constraints) is extracted dynamically from the identi® ed two-dimensional primitives. From the extracted information, more accurate two-dimensional geometry can be built up by a two-dimensional geometric constraint solver. The two-dimensional topology and geometry information is then employed to further interpretation of a three-dimensional geometry. The system can not only accept sketched input but also users' interactive input of two-and three-dimensional primitives. This makes it friendly and easier to use, in comparison with`sketched input only' or interactive input only' systems. Finally, examples are given to illustrate the system

    Math Search for the Masses: Multimodal Search Interfaces and Appearance-Based Retrieval

    We summarize math search engines and search interfaces produced by the Document and Pattern Recognition Lab in recent years, and in particular the min math search interface and the Tangent search engine. Source code for both systems are publicly available.     Semi Automatic Segmentation of a Rat Brain Atlas

    A common approach to segment an MRI dataset is to use a standard atlas to identify different regions of interest. Existing 2D atlases, prepared by freehand tracings of templates, are seldom complete for 3D volume segmentation. Although many of these atlases are prepared in graphics packages like Adobe Illustrator® (AI), which present the geometrical entities based on their mathematical description, the drawings are not numerically robust. This work presents an automatic conversion of graphical atlases suitable for further usage such as creation of a segmented 3D numerical atlas. The system begins with DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) files of individual atlas drawings. The drawing entities are mostly in cubic spline format. Each segment of the spline is reduced to polylines, which reduces the complexity of data. The system merges overlapping nodes and polylines to make the database of the drawing numerically integrated, i.e. each location within the drawing is referred by only one point, each line is uniquely defined by only two nodes, etc. Numerous integrity diagnostics are performed to eliminate duplicate or overlapping lines, extraneous markers, open-ended loops, etc. Numerically intact closed loops are formed using atlas labels as seed points. These loops specify the boundary and tissue type for each area. The final results preserve the original atlas with its 1272 different neuroanatomical regions which are complete, non-overlapping, contiguous sub-areas whose boundaries are composed of unique polyline
