Prediction of segregation in funnel and mass flow discharge

In this paper we present a model to predict the onset and evolution of segregation during the discharge of binary mixtures of granular materials. The model accounts for the multi-phase and multi-component nature of the granular mixtures, to simulate the main flow regimes occurring in the discharge of silos (funnel and mass flow) and how they affect segregation. The new comprehensive model for segregation follows a continuum Eulerian approach and results from the coupling between an ad-hoc rheology for granular flow and a percolation model for multi-component mixtures. Predictions are compared with independent literature experimental data, for short and tall silos and prove to be quite accurate, after a tuning of the percolation flux sub-model. The larger segregation in short flow paths with smaller amount of fines reported by the experiments is quantitatively predicted. The model also predicts the three phases observed in experiments during the discharge of tall silos

Coupled DEM-LBM method for the free-surface simulation of heterogeneous suspensions

The complexity of the interactions between the constituent granular and liquid phases of a suspension requires an adequate treatment of the constituents themselves. A promising way for numerical simulations of such systems is given by hybrid computational frameworks. This is naturally done, when the Lagrangian description of particle dynamics of the granular phase finds a correspondence in the fluid description. In this work we employ extensions of the Lattice-Boltzmann Method for non-Newtonian rheology, free surfaces, and moving boundaries. The models allows for a full coupling of the phases, but in a simplified way. An experimental validation is given by an example of gravity driven flow of a particle suspension

    Model for erosion-deposition patterns

We investigate through computational simulations with a pore network model the formation of patterns caused by erosion-deposition mechanisms. In this model, the geometry of the pore space changes dynamically as a consequence of the coupling between the fluid flow and the movement of particles due to local drag forces. Our results for this irreversible process show that the model is capable to reproduce typical natural patterns caused by well known erosion processes. Moreover, we observe that, within a certain range of porosity values, the grains form clusters that are tilted with respect to the horizontal with a characteristic angle. We compare our results to recent experiments for granular material in flowing water and show that they present a satisfactory agreement.Comment: 8 pages, 12 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

Mesoscopic lattice Boltzmann modeling of soft-glassy systems: theory and simulations

A multi-component lattice Boltzmann model recently introduced (R. Benzi et al. Phys. Rev. Lett 102, 026002 (2009)) to describe some dynamical behaviors of soft-flowing materials is theoretically analyzed. Equilibrium and transport properties are derived within the framework of a continuum free-energy formulation, and checked against numerical simulations. Due to the competition between short-range inter-species repulsion and mid-range intra-species attraction, the model is shown to give rise to a very rich configurational dynamics of the density field, exhibiting numerous features of soft-flowing materials, such as long-time relaxation due to caging effects, enhanced viscosity and structural arrest, ageing under moderate shear and shear-thinning flow above a critical shear threshold.Comment: 25 pages, 17 figures, submitted to Journal of chemical physics
