    Framework for Academic Advice through Mobile Applications

    The increasing rate of high (secondary) school leavers choosing academic majors to study at the university without proper guidance has most times left students with unfavorable consequences including low grades, extra year(s), the need to switch programs and ultimately having to withdraw from the university. In a bid to proffer a solution to the issue, this research aims to build an expert system that recommends university or academic majors to high school students in developing countries where there is a dearth of human career counselors. This is to reduce the adverse effects caused as a result of wrong choices made by students. A mobile rule-based expert system supported with ontology was developed for easy accessibility by the students

    Refining the PoinTER “human firewall” pentesting framework

    PurposePenetration tests have become a valuable tool in the cyber security defence strategy, in terms of detecting vulnerabilities. Although penetration testing has traditionally focused on technical aspects, the field has started to realise the importance of the human in the organisation, and the need to ensure that humans are resistant to cyber-attacks. To achieve this, some organisations “pentest” their employees, testing their resilience and ability to detect and repel human-targeted attacks. In a previous paper we reported on PoinTER (Prepare TEst Remediate), a human pentesting framework, tailored to the needs of SMEs. In this paper, we propose improvements to refine our framework. The improvements are based on a derived set of ethical principles that have been subjected to ethical scrutiny.MethodologyWe conducted a systematic literature review of academic research, a review of actual hacker techniques, industry recommendations and official body advice related to social engineering techniques. To meet our requirements to have an ethical human pentesting framework, we compiled a list of ethical principles from the research literature which we used to filter out techniques deemed unethical.FindingsDrawing on social engineering techniques from academic research, reported by the hacker community, industry recommendations and official body advice and subjecting each technique to ethical inspection, using a comprehensive list of ethical principles, we propose the refined GDPR compliant and privacy respecting PoinTER Framework. The list of ethical principles, we suggest, could also inform ethical technical pentests.OriginalityPrevious work has considered penetration testing humans, but few have produced a comprehensive framework such as PoinTER. PoinTER has been rigorously derived from multiple sources and ethically scrutinised through inspection, using a comprehensive list of ethical principles derived from the research literature

    Technology is increasingly being used to underpin business processes across teaching and learning, research, knowledge exchange and business support activities in both HE and FE. The introduction of technology has a significant impact on the working practices of staff, often requiring them to work in a radically different way. Change in any situation can be unsettling and problematic and, where not effectively managed, can lead to poor service or functionality and disenfranchised staff. These issues can have a direct impact on institutional effectiveness, reputation and the resulting student experience. The Work-with-IT project, based at the University of Strathclyde, sought to examine changes to working practices across HE and FE, the impact on staff roles and relationships and the new skills sets that are required to meet these changes

    Mobilising teacher education: a study of a professional learning community

    This paper reports on a study of a community of university educators that investigated the introduction of mobile technologies into their learning and teaching. The study was conducted by a subgroup of that community. Given the ubiquity of mobile devices, members of the community felt they needed to develop expertise in mobile learning so that they could incorporate it into their teaching. They studied their own learning, supported by a critical friend who evaluated the community's functioning and activities, providing valuable feedback. Activities of this group were informed by and focused on: development of awareness of the potential of mobile devices for learning; construction of action plans within the community; and implementation of these plans. They also included investigating best-practice approaches by interviewing experts in the field, exploring the literature on mobile learning and then initiating and testing some mobile learning pedagogies in the context of their own teacher education subjects. The community met regularly to discuss emerging issues and applications. The paper shares some of the findings gained from studying the community, and discusses the challenges and constraints that were experienced. The authors conclude with recommendations for professional learning communities aiming to learn about technology-mediated teaching practices

The mainpurpose of the existence of this system is to provide guidance and mentoring to students in their academic direction. Web-based system has been used as a medium for students to obtain information specifically related to academic course of study and learning. The use of the web-based system is to facilitate the process of selecting courses for planning of studies. The aims of this research are to design and implement quality management system based on International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in higher education or university with android and to know the respondents’ reaction regarding the new design quality management system based on ISO in higher education or university with android. The tools that used in this research are hardware and sofware. In this research use quality management system based on ISO 9001 (quality control) and the process of managing the data in the application of Android telephone celuler will use to implement the system to achieve the result of the research. The sample is 15 students of Information System Department students in Diponegoro University. The method analysis use in this research is descriptive analysis. The result of this study is the develop of information systems used in the higher education or university to know the quality management system based on ISO using Android. The information system to know the quality management system based on ISO using Android telephon celluler is very useful and easy to aplicated.
