    Specification and Prototyping for Design of a Control System for Proton Computer Tomography.

    Proton Computer Tomography (pCT) is a new imaging modality. It based on proton with matter interaction. Treatment with protons is used already against cancer, as it offers the possibility to give a high dose to the tumour, while at the same time deposit a very low dose to the surrounding tissue. Imaging with protons improves the accuracy of the dose planning. However, there are no commercial pCT scanners available in the market today. At the Department of Physics and Technology at the University of Bergen, a new generation of a Digital Tracking Calorimeter (DTC) is designed. It is a significant part of the pCT system. It is a highly complex device designed with 41 layers of ALPIDEs, a Monotholitic Active Pixel Sensor. It is more than 4000 ALPIDEs in the design, and they will be read out and controlled by 41 custom readout units. A control system is required, both to configure the system and to monitor vital health parameters such as temperatures, current and voltages during operation. During this thesis, prototyping has been done to find the best solution. At the time of writing, the DTC is still under development, so the work covers tests of communication protocols and prototyping of a monitoring system with randomly generated data. Various options of communication protocols for the pCT control system has been tested in this thesis.The work of this thesis has shown that the best option for the pCT control system will be the use of OPC UA communication protocol as it is a standard industrial protocol of communication.     Machine Tool Communication (MTComm) Method and Its Applications in a Cyber-Physical Manufacturing Cloud

    The integration of cyber-physical systems and cloud manufacturing has the potential to revolutionize existing manufacturing systems by enabling better accessibility, agility, and efficiency. To achieve this, it is necessary to establish a communication method of manufacturing services over the Internet to access and manage physical machines from cloud applications. Most of the existing industrial automation protocols utilize Ethernet based Local Area Network (LAN) and are not designed specifically for Internet enabled data transmission. Recently MTConnect has been gaining popularity as a standard for monitoring status of machine tools through RESTful web services and an XML based messaging structure, but it is only designed for data collection and interpretation and lacks remote operation capability. This dissertation presents the design, development, optimization, and applications of a service-oriented Internet-scale communication method named Machine Tool Communication (MTComm) for exchanging manufacturing services in a Cyber-Physical Manufacturing Cloud (CPMC) to enable manufacturing with heterogeneous physically connected machine tools from geographically distributed locations over the Internet. MTComm uses an agent-adapter based architecture and a semantic ontology to provide both remote monitoring and operation capabilities through RESTful services and XML messages. MTComm was successfully used to develop and implement multi-purpose applications in in a CPMC including remote and collaborative manufacturing, active testing-based and edge-based fault diagnosis and maintenance of machine tools, cross-domain interoperability between Internet-of-things (IoT) devices and supply chain robots etc. To improve MTComm’s overall performance, efficiency, and acceptability in cyber manufacturing, the concept of MTComm’s edge-based middleware was introduced and three optimization strategies for data catching, transmission, and operation execution were developed and adopted at the edge. Finally, a hardware prototype of the middleware was implemented on a System-On-Chip based FPGA device to reduce computational and transmission latency. At every stage of its development, MTComm’s performance and feasibility were evaluated with experiments in a CPMC testbed with three different types of manufacturing machine tools. Experimental results demonstrated MTComm’s excellent feasibility for scalable cyber-physical manufacturing and superior performance over other existing approaches

    Subsea Communication - Implementing and Evaluating Protocols

    This thesis compares the performance, features, and practical implementation experience for subsea relevant protocols. Modbus TCP and Ethernet/IP are examples on mature communication protocols that can be used to exchange process data between topside and subsea. OPC UA is added as a suggestion to perform prospective data exchange between topside and subsea. The theoretical evaluation is performed for Modbus TCP, Ethernet/IP, and OPC UA. The evaluation reveals that Ethernet/IP is the only protocol that quantifies achievable performance indicators, Modbus TCP and OPC UA are not supposed to have performance indicators due its wide range of application. Also, the direct comparison of Modbus TCP and Ethernet/IP concludes that Ethernet/IP has better real-time properties, better multicast performance, and better support for features like time synchronization and safety protocol. CAN bus (SIIS level II) and IWIS are used for data exchange at sensor level, an introduction and evaluation of these two principles are performed. However, a direct comparison of the two were not considered relevant as they are engineered for two different purposes. The practical part of the thesis has consisted of implementing two different communication protocols that can be used for the same purpose. The first task was reading and interpreting the official Modbus TCP specification and implementing this for message exchange between two microcontrollers. The second task involved implementation of OPC UA on a microcomputer by use of a software development kit

    Modeling and Simulation Methodologies for Digital Twin in Industry 4.0

    The concept of Industry 4.0 represents an innovative vision of what will be the factory of the future. The principles of this new paradigm are based on interoperability and data exchange between dierent industrial equipment. In this context, Cyber- Physical Systems (CPSs) cover one of the main roles in this revolution. The combination of models and the integration of real data coming from the field allows to obtain the virtual copy of the real plant, also called Digital Twin. The entire factory can be seen as a set of CPSs and the resulting system is also called Cyber-Physical Production System (CPPS). This CPPS represents the Digital Twin of the factory with which it would be possible analyze the real factory. The interoperability between the real industrial equipment and the Digital Twin allows to make predictions concerning the quality of the products. More in details, these analyses are related to the variability of production quality, prediction of the maintenance cycle, the accurate estimation of energy consumption and other extra-functional properties of the system. Several tools [2] allow to model a production line, considering dierent aspects of the factory (i.e. geometrical properties, the information flows etc.) However, these simulators do not provide natively any solution for the design integration of CPSs, making impossible to have precise analysis concerning the real factory. Furthermore, for the best of our knowledge, there are no solution regarding a clear integration of data coming from real equipment into CPS models that composes the entire production line. In this context, the goal of this thesis aims to define an unified methodology to design and simulate the Digital Twin of a plant, integrating data coming from real equipment. In detail, the presented methodologies focus mainly on: integration of heterogeneous models in production line simulators; Integration of heterogeneous models with ad-hoc simulation strategies; Multi-level simulation approach of CPS and integration of real data coming from sensors into models. All the presented contributions produce an environment that allows to perform simulation of the plant based not only on synthetic data, but also on real data coming from equipments

    Since the foundation and up to the current state-of-the-art in control engineering, the problems of PID control steadily attract great attention of numerous researchers and remain inexhaustible source of new ideas for process of control system design and industrial applications. PID control effectiveness is usually caused by the nature of dynamical processes, conditioned that the majority of the industrial dynamical processes are well described by simple dynamic model of the first or second order. The efficacy of PID controllers vastly falls in case of complicated dynamics, nonlinearities, and varying parameters of the plant. This gives a pulse to further researches in the field of PID control. Consequently, the problems of advanced PID control system design methodologies, rules of adaptive PID control, self-tuning procedures, and particularly robustness and transient performance for nonlinear systems, still remain as the areas of the lively interests for many scientists and researchers at the present time. The recent research results presented in this book provide new ideas for improved performance of PID control applications

    Security Architecture for Point-to-Point Splitting Protocols

    International audienceThe security of industrial supervisory control and data acquisition systems (SCADA) has become a major concern since the Stuxnet worm in 2010. As these systems are connected to the physical world, this makes them possibly hazardous if a malicious attacker is able to take over their control. SCADA can live up to 40 years, are particularly hard to patch, and quite often have no security feature at all. Thus, rather than securing them, network segregation is often used to prevent attackers from entering the industrial system. In this paper, we propose a generic solution: embed a point-to-point splitting protocol within a physical device, thus able to physically isolate networks, perform deep packet inspection and also provide encryption if necessary. We obtain a kind of next generation firewall, encompassing at least both diode and firewall features, for which conformity to security policies can be ensured. Then we define a set of associated security properties for such devices and the requirements for such a device's security architecture and filtering rules.
