    All mixed up? Finding the optimal feature set for general readability prediction and its application to English and Dutch

    Readability research has a long and rich tradition, but there has been too little focus on general readability prediction without targeting a specific audience or text genre. Moreover, though NLP-inspired research has focused on adding more complex readability features there is still no consensus on which features contribute most to the prediction. In this article, we investigate in close detail the feasibility of constructing a readability prediction system for English and Dutch generic text using supervised machine learning. Based on readability assessments by both experts and a crowd, we implement different types of text characteristics ranging from easy-to-compute superficial text characteristics to features requiring a deep linguistic processing, resulting in ten different feature groups. Both a regression and classification setup are investigated reflecting the two possible readability prediction tasks: scoring individual texts or comparing two texts. We show that going beyond correlation calculations for readability optimization using a wrapper-based genetic algorithm optimization approach is a promising task which provides considerable insights in which feature combinations contribute to the overall readability prediction. Since we also have gold standard information available for those features requiring deep processing we are able to investigate the true upper bound of our Dutch system. Interestingly, we will observe that the performance of our fully-automatic readability prediction pipeline is on par with the pipeline using golden deep syntactic and semantic information

    Using point-set compression to classify folk songs

    Thirteen different compression algorithms were used to calculate the normalized compression distances (NCDs) between pairs of tunes in the Annotated Corpus of 360 Dutch folk songs from the collection Onder de groene linde. These NCDs were then used in conjunction with the 1-nearest-neighbour algorithm and leave-one-out cross-validation to classify the 360 melodies into tune families. The classifications produced by the algorithms were compared with a ground-truth classification prepared by expert musicologists. Twelve of the thirteen compressors used in the ex-periment were based on the discovery of translational equivalence classes (TECs) of maximal translatable patterns (MTPs) in point-set representations of the melodies. The twelve algorithms con-sisted of four variants of each of three basic algorithms, COSI-ATEC, SIATECCOMPRESS and Forth’s algorithm. The main difference between these algorithms is that COSIATEC strictly partitions the input point set into TEC covered sets, whereas the TEC covered sets in the output of SIATECCOMPRESS and Forth’s algorithm may share points. The general-purpose compressor, bzip2, was used as a baseline against which the point-set com-pression algorithms were compared. The highest classification success rate of 77–84 % was achieved by COSIATEC, followed by 60–64 % for Forth’s algorithm and then 52–58 % for SIATE-CCOMPRESS. When the NCDs were calculated using bzip2, the success rate was only 12.5%. The results demonstrate that the effectiveness of NCD for measuring similarity between folk-songs for classification purposes is highly dependent upon the actual compressor chosen. Furthermore, it seems that compres-sors based on finding maximal repeated patterns in point-set rep-resentations of music show more promise for NCD-based mu-sic classification than general-purpose compressors designed for compressing text strings. 1

    A memory-based classification approach to marker-based EBMT

    We describe a novel approach to example-based machine translation that makes use of marker-based chunks, in which the decoder is a memory-based classifier. The classifier is trained to map trigrams of source-language chunks onto trigrams of target-language chunks; then, in a second decoding step, the predicted trigrams are rearranged according to their overlap. We present the first results of this method on a Dutch-to-English translation system using Europarl data. Sparseness of the class space causes the results to lag behind a baseline phrase-based SMT system. In a further comparison, we also apply the method to a word-aligned version of the same data, and report a smaller difference with a word-based SMT system. We explore the scaling abilities of the memory-based approach, and observe linear scaling behavior in training and classification speed and memory costs, and loglinear BLEU improvements in the amount of training examples

    Translationese and post-editese : how comparable is comparable quality?

    Whereas post-edited texts have been shown to be either of comparable quality to human translations or better, one study shows that people still seem to prefer human-translated texts. The idea of texts being inherently different despite being of high quality is not new. Translated texts, for example,are also different from original texts, a phenomenon referred to as ‘Translationese’. Research into Translationese has shown that, whereas humans cannot distinguish between translated and original text,computers have been trained to detect Translationesesuccessfully. It remains to be seen whether the same can be done for what we call Post-editese. We first establish whether humans are capable of distinguishing post-edited texts from human translations, and then establish whether it is possible to build a supervised machine-learning model that can distinguish between translated and post-edited text

    Noise or music? Investigating the usefulness of normalisation for robust sentiment analysis on social media data

    In the past decade, sentiment analysis research has thrived, especially on social media. While this data genre is suitable to extract opinions and sentiment, it is known to be noisy. Complex normalisation methods have been developed to transform noisy text into its standard form, but their effect on tasks like sentiment analysis remains underinvestigated. Sentiment analysis approaches mostly include spell checking or rule-based normalisation as preprocess- ing and rarely investigate its impact on the task performance. We present an optimised sentiment classifier and investigate to what extent its performance can be enhanced by integrating SMT-based normalisation as preprocessing. Experiments on a test set comprising a variety of user-generated content genres revealed that normalisation improves sentiment classification performance on tweets and blog posts, showing the model’s ability to generalise to other data genres

    Meta-Learning for Phonemic Annotation of Corpora

    We apply rule induction, classifier combination and meta-learning (stacked classifiers) to the problem of bootstrapping high accuracy automatic annotation of corpora with pronunciation information. The task we address in this paper consists of generating phonemic representations reflecting the Flemish and Dutch pronunciations of a word on the basis of its orthographic representation (which in turn is based on the actual speech recordings). We compare several possible approaches to achieve the text-to-pronunciation mapping task: memory-based learning, transformation-based learning, rule induction, maximum entropy modeling, combination of classifiers in stacked learning, and stacking of meta-learners. We are interested both in optimal accuracy and in obtaining insight into the linguistic regularities involved. As far as accuracy is concerned, an already high accuracy level (93% for Celex and 86% for Fonilex at word level) for single classifiers is boosted significantly with additional error reductions of 31% and 38% respectively using combination of classifiers, and a further 5% using combination of meta-learners, bringing overall word level accuracy to 96% for the Dutch variant and 92% for the Flemish variant. We also show that the application of machine learning methods indeed leads to increased insight into the linguistic regularities determining the variation between the two pronunciation variants studied.Comment: 8 page

    TermEval 2020 : shared task on automatic term extraction using the Annotated Corpora for term Extraction Research (ACTER) dataset

    The TermEval 2020 shared task provided a platform for researchers to work on automatic term extraction (ATE) with the same dataset: the Annotated Corpora for Term Extraction Research (ACTER). The dataset covers three languages (English, French, and Dutch) and four domains, of which the domain of heart failure was kept as a held-out test set on which final f1-scores were calculated. The aim was to provide a large, transparent, qualitatively annotated, and diverse dataset to the ATE research community, with the goal of promoting comparative research and thus identifying strengths and weaknesses of various state-of-the-art methodologies. The results show a lot of variation between different systems and illustrate how some methodologies reach higher precision or recall, how different systems extract different types of terms, how some are exceptionally good at finding rare terms, or are less impacted by term length. The current contribution offers an overview of the shared task with a comparative evaluation, which complements the individual papers by all participants
