    Forming Within-site Topical Information Space to Facilitate Online Free-Choice Learning

    Locating specific and structured information in the World Wide Web (WWW) is becoming increasingly difficult, because of the rapid growth of the Web and the distributed nature of information. Although existing search engines do a good job in ranking web pages based on topical relevance, they provide limited assistance for free-choice learners to leverage the nonlinear nature of information spaces for knowledge acquisition. We hypothesize that free-choice learners would benefit more from structured topical information spaces than a list of individual pages across multiple websites. We conceptualize a within-site topical information space as a sphere formed by linked pages centering on a web page. In this paper, we investigate techniques and heuristics to form the space. In particular, we propose a hybrid method that relies on not only content-based characteristics and user queries, but also a site\u27s global structure. Experimental results show that consideration of website topology provides good improvement to page relevance estimation, indicating the clustering tendency of relevant pages

    Exploiting multimedia in creating and analysing multimedia Web archives

    The data contained on the web and the social web are inherently multimedia and consist of a mixture of textual, visual and audio modalities. Community memories embodied on the web and social web contain a rich mixture of data from these modalities. In many ways, the web is the greatest resource ever created by human-kind. However, due to the dynamic and distributed nature of the web, its content changes, appears and disappears on a daily basis. Web archiving provides a way of capturing snapshots of (parts of) the web for preservation and future analysis. This paper provides an overview of techniques we have developed within the context of the EU funded ARCOMEM (ARchiving COmmunity MEMories) project to allow multimedia web content to be leveraged during the archival process and for post-archival analysis. Through a set of use cases, we explore several practical applications of multimedia analytics within the realm of web archiving, web archive analysis and multimedia data on the web in general

    Focused image search in the social Web.

    Recently, social multimedia-sharing websites, which allow users to upload, annotate, and share online photo or video collections, have become increasingly popular. The user tags or annotations constitute the new multimedia meta-data . We present an image search system that exploits both image textual and visual information. First, we use focused crawling and DOM Tree based web data extraction methods to extract image textual features from social networking image collections. Second, we propose the concept of visual words to handle the image\u27s visual content for fast indexing and searching. We also develop several user friendly search options to allow users to query the index using words and image feature descriptions (visual words). The developed image search system tries to bridge the gap between the scalable industrial image search engines, which are based on keyword search, and the slower content based image retrieval systems developed mostly in the academic field and designed to search based on image content only. We have implemented a working prototype by crawling and indexing over 16,056 images from flickr.com, one of the most popular image sharing websites.     Hypermedia-based discovery for source selection using low-cost linked data interfaces

    Evaluating federated Linked Data queries requires consulting multiple sources on the Web. Before a client can execute queries, it must discover data sources, and determine which ones are relevant. Federated query execution research focuses on the actual execution, while data source discovery is often marginally discussed-even though it has a strong impact on selecting sources that contribute to the query results. Therefore, the authors introduce a discovery approach for Linked Data interfaces based on hypermedia links and controls, and apply it to federated query execution with Triple Pattern Fragments. In addition, the authors identify quantitative metrics to evaluate this discovery approach. This article describes generic evaluation measures and results for their concrete approach. With low-cost data summaries as seed, interfaces to eight large real-world datasets can discover each other within 7 minutes. Hypermedia-based client-side querying shows a promising gain of up to 50% in execution time, but demands algorithms that visit a higher number of interfaces to improve result completeness

    UniversityIE: Information Extraction From University Web Pages

    The amount of information available on the web is growing constantly. As a result, theproblem of retrieving any desired information is getting more difficult by the day. Toalleviate this problem, several techniques are currently being used, both for locatingpages of interest and for extracting meaningful information from the retrieved pages.Information extraction (IE) is one such technology that is used for summarizingunrestricted natural language text into a structured set of facts. IE is already being appliedwithin several domains such as news transcripts, insurance information, and weatherreports. Various approaches to IE have been taken and a number of significant resultshave been reported.In this thesis, we describe the application of IE techniques to the domain of universityweb pages. This domain is broader than previously evaluated domains and has a varietyof idiosyncratic problems to address. We present an analysis of the domain of universityweb pages and the consequences of having them input to IE systems. We then presentUniversityIE, a system that can search a web site, extract relevant pages, and processthem for information such as admission requirements or general information. TheUniversityIE system, developed as part of this research, contributes three IE methods anda web-crawling heuristic that worked relatively well and predictably over a test set ofuniversity web sites.We designed UniversityIE as a generic framework for plugging in and executing IEmethods over pages acquired from the web. We also integrated in the system a genericweb crawler (built at the University of Kentucky) and ported to Java and integrated anexternal word lexicon (WordNet) and a syntax parser (Link Grammar Parser)

    Automatically assembling a full census of an academic field

    The composition of the scientific workforce shapes the direction of scientific research, directly through the selection of questions to investigate, and indirectly through its influence on the training of future scientists. In most fields, however, complete census information is difficult to obtain, complicating efforts to study workforce dynamics and the effects of policy. This is particularly true in computer science, which lacks a single, all-encompassing directory or professional organization. A full census of computer science would serve many purposes, not the least of which is a better understanding of the trends and causes of unequal representation in computing. Previous academic census efforts have relied on narrow or biased samples, or on professional society membership rolls. A full census can be constructed directly from online departmental faculty directories, but doing so by hand is prohibitively expensive and time-consuming. Here, we introduce a topical web crawler for automating the collection of faculty information from web-based department rosters, and demonstrate the resulting system on the 205 PhD-granting computer science departments in the U.S. and Canada. This method constructs a complete census of the field within a few minutes, and achieves over 99% precision and recall. We conclude by comparing the resulting 2017 census to a hand-curated 2011 census to quantify turnover and retention in computer science, in general and for female faculty in particular, demonstrating the types of analysis made possible by automated census construction.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 2 table
