Four international alumni find a common language between their RISD education and their own rich, evolving cultures. Found in Translation: A Phenomenology of Translation

In this increasingly globalized academic forum, many feel that today’s linguistic challenges are more extreme than those of the past. Yet translation has been a necessary part of the work of philosophy for centuries, whether translating from Greek to Latin or German to Spanish. Because of this, I would like to explore the relationship between translation and philosophy by undertaking a phenomenology of translation. By investigating the way in which translation affects the growth of philosophers, we may be able to come to some understanding of how translation informs philosophy as a field and find out what qualities make a translation good

Translation of Passive Voice Found in the Novel the Sea of Monster by Rick Riordan and Its Translation by Nuraini Mastura

This Present research aims at analyzing the translation of passive voice from English into Indonesian and finding out the problem occurring in translating them. The qualitative descriptive method was applied in this research. The data were gathered from the novel The Sea of Monster by Rick Riordan and its Translation by Nuraini Mastura. The analyzed data were limited, that is, simple present tense, past perfect tense, and modal auxiliary. They are analyzed by applying the semantics and grammatical approaches. The findings have shown that the problems can be either semantic and cultural aspect or grammatical system. Despite those obstacles, it is found that the translator is able to produce a good and natural translation. She can transfer message contained in SL into TL. Cultural context and translation shift are getting involved in the process of creating natural translation

Lost and Found In Translation

„Lost and found in translation‟ explores gaps in communication and mistranslations between languages and cultural identities. My art practice has evolved from traditional printmaking in Shanghai to installations and screenprints as a student in the U.S., to my doctoral work which draws from my research and my experiences and encounters in London. My research centres on three generations of Chinese artists who brought their own culture to bear on the experience of living and making work in the West. The first generation was led by Xu Beihong in the 1920s. The second generation was led by Xu Bing, Ai Weiwei and Tan Dun, who lived together in New York in the 1980s. The third generation, which includes myself, Yang Yuanyuan and Liu Yefu, were born in the 1990s and 2000s and studied abroad. This generation uses multiple media, including social media, in a globalized art world where their identity as „Chinese‟ artists is less central. My own artwork is located also in the context of contemporary artists who use text in their work, such as Jenny Holzer and Jens Haaning. When facing the clash of cultural and linguistic environments, my aim is to find a balance between inclusive and exclusive language systems. What seems to be „lost‟ in translation can be used creatively in art practice, through hybridized forms and often through humour, to „find‟ new meanings for myself, and hopefully for the audiences of my work

THEMATIC STRUCTURE SHIFT FOUND IN ENGLISH - INDONESIAN TRANSLATION OF OBAMA’S SPEECH IN INDONESIA UNIVERSITY

This study analyzes types of themes and theme shifts in the English - Indonesian translation of Barrac Obama’s speech in Universitas Indonesia. The result shows that topical theme dominates the entire texts 71.43% in ST and 79.64% in TT. Interpersonal theme is the least theme found in both texts. Most topical themes are in participants, followed by circumstance and process. The textual theme in both texts is adjunct conjunctive. The interpersonal themes are modals. Most of the themes are considered as equivalent. The theme shift occurs through three processes: by changing the grammatical function within the theme by adding more themes and by deleting themes
