    Employer and work-based student perceptions of virtual laboratory teaching and assessment resources

    Training in laboratory competency is an important part of biomedical student skill acquisition in preparation for both the workplace and accreditation. Virtual laboratory simulations are currently used in core modules at University of Westminster to prepare biomedical science students for laboratory sessions. These simulations are used for formative and summative assessment and incorporate questions on theoretical aspects, in addition to simulating laboratory techniques. Whilst analysis has been carried out on student learning with virtual laboratory simulations, the impact of these on work-based students and the opinions of employers has not been evaluated.Students undertaking core first year modules include part-time attendance work-based students and part-time distance learners, who are mostly employed in diagnostic laboratory settings. Part-time work-based students and distance learners often need to be more efficient and maximise their use of available study time than their full-time student peers. The aim of this study was to collect the views of the work-based students and their employers on these virtual laboratory simulations through semi-structured interviews to evaluate the effectiveness of these teaching tools for work-based students. This report presents the comments of part-time students, distance learners and employers relating to the use of virtual laboratory simulations highlighting key similarities and differences. The consensus is that use of the virtual laboratory is helpful and can supplement but not replace practical classes and employer-led training. At present there is no appetite amongst employers to use these simulations to replace competency testing. Whilst virtual laboratory simulations are recognised to have benefits, there are caveats related to both cost/ benefit and to how they should be deployed

    In response to poor student attainment rates, the teaching, learning and assessment strategy of a Level 1 circuit theory unit has been revised to emphasise the importance of regular attendance at teaching sessions, and also to provide regular formative feedback. As part of the assessment scheme a tutorial workbook has been used for both formative and summative assessment. The workbook is assessed regularly during scheduled teaching sessions. The use of objective questions has reduced the time taken to assess the work, while the regular assessments help with student motivation, provide formative feedback, and help students to structure and pace their learning

    Engaging sport students in assessment and formative feedback

    Sport as a discipline in higher education is grappling with the challenge of providing authentic and relevant assessment that engages students in their learning. The centrality of assessment to the student experience is now well accepted within the research literature (Brown and Knight, 1994; Rust, 2002). In particular, formative assessment, or assessment that creates feedback to support future teaching and learning experiences, can be a powerful tool for enhancing learning (see Black and Wiliam, 1998). Given that feedback is most effective if it is considered or reflected upon, one of the key challenges is to actively engage sport students in formative assessment processes. This guide offers advice in designing and facilitating sport studentsā€™ involvement in assessment and enhancing their engagement with the feedback they receive. The aim is to support sport programme teams by taking a pragmatic approach, combining a clear academic rationale based on assessment for learning principles with case study examples of successful formative assessment exercises emphasising innovative approaches to giving feedback. The guide consists of three key sections focused on: 1) Providing staff in HLST with background knowledge of formative assessment and formative feedback and how it relates to their subject. 2) Providing case study examples of how to effectively engage sport students with assessment feedback so that it feeds-forward to aid learning. 3) Providing a resource of references and sources of support for tutors wishing to further their learning in this area

It attends to the assertion, widely made in policy pronouncements within and beyond the UK, at every level of the education system, that assessment is an integral part of teaching, pronouncements seen by some writers as rhetoric-driven and atheoretical. It focuses in particular on formative assessment, with its underlying assumption that, to be effective, teaching must match the cognitive requirements of learners. The study examines the psychological and epistemological foundations of this assertion, contends that both are problematic, and confirms that advances in theoretical understanding are required. It argues that, to secure these advances, laboratory-based investigations of tutoring must be complemented by studies of what proficient teachers do in complex classroom settings. At the centre of this work is one such investigation, a case study of one teacher's practice in relation to the humanities curriculum within an English primary school. The enquiry is in the interpretive tradition, in that the understandings developed are founded on the perceptions of the teacher involved. With regard to this teacher, the principal findings are four. Matching involves the continuous calibration of teaching action to perceptions of learners' needs within extended interaction, not discrete assessment encounters. His evaluative concerns involve fine discriminations of both thinking and feeling. What is involved is ultimately understandable in terms of his broad educational philosophy. In this sense, his formative assessment practice is integral to his teaching. In this light, it is suggested that efforts to shape an adequate theory of formative assessment that is relevant to classroom settings within a social constructivist framework may require to embrace extended teacher-pupil interaction as well as discrete assessment encounters. This points to a need for a reconceptualisation of formative assessment, placing teacher consciousness at its centre

    The use of computer-based assessments in a field biology module

    Formative computer-based assessments (CBAs) for self-instruction were introduced into a Year-2 field biology module. These CBAs were provided in ā€˜tutorialā€™ mode where each question had context-related diagnostic feedback and tutorial pages, and a self-test mode where the same CBA returned only a score. The summative assessments remained unchanged and consisted of an unseen CBA and written reports of field investigations. When compared with the previous three year-cohorts, the mean score for the summative CBA increased after the introduction of formative CBAs, whereas mean scores for written reports did not change. It is suggested that the increase in summative CBA mean score reflects the effectiveness of the formative CBAs in widening the studentsā€™ knowledge base. Evaluation of all assessments using an Assessment Experience Questionnaire indicated that they satisfied the ā€˜11 conditions under which assessment supports student learningā€™. Additionally, evidence is presented that the formative CBAs enhanced self-regulated student learning

    Milestone - based assessment: an alternative continuous assessment strategy for laboratory learning outcomes

    Engineering programs often feature units that contain a semester-long laboratory project, in which students complete an extended piece of work throughout the full duration of the semester. This paper presents an alternative assessment approach called ā€œMilestone-Based Markingā€. As students make incremental progress they can claim incremental marks, and are able to receive incremental feedback on their progress. Each of the milestones is rated for difficulty ā€“ Easy, Standard, Hard or Challenging. Easy milestones require less effort than Hard milestones, providing students with a clear guide as to how best to invest their time and effort. This approach changes the nature of the assessment from a purely summative process to a largely formative process. This approach has been used successfully across a number of units, with students indicating that they believe that the approach is fair, and that it better supports their learning

    Changing assessment practice in engineering: how can understanding lecturer perspectives help?

    Assessment in engineering disciplines is typically oriented to demonstrating competence in specific tasks. Even where assessments are intended to have a formative component, little priority may be given to feedback. Engineering departments are often criticized, by their students and by external quality reviewers, for paying insufficient attention to formative assessment. The e3an project set out to build a question bank of peer-reviewed questions for use within electrical and electronic engineering. As a part of this process, a number of engineers from disparate institutions were required to work together in teams, designing a range of assessments for their subject specialisms. The project team observed that lecturers were especially keen to develop formative assessment but that their understanding of what might be required varied considerably. This paper describes the various ways in which the processes of the project have engaged lecturers in actively identifying and developing their conceptions of teaching, learning and assessment in their subject. It reports on an interview study that was conducted with a selection of participants. It is concluded that lecturers' reflections on and understanding of assessment are closely related to the nature of the subject domain and that it is essential when attempting to improve assessment practice to start from the perspective of lecturers in the discipline
