    Multirobot heterogeneous control considering secondary objectives

    Cooperative robotics has considered tasks that are executed frequently, maintaining the shape and orientation of robotic systems when they fulfill a common objective, without taking advantage of the redundancy that the robotic group could present. This paper presents a proposal for controlling a group of terrestrial robots with heterogeneous characteristics, considering primary and secondary tasks thus that the group complies with the following of a path while modifying its shape and orientation at any time. The development of the proposal is achieved through the use of controllers based on linear algebra, propounding a low computational cost and high scalability algorithm. Likewise, the stability of the controller is analyzed to know the required features that have to be met by the control constants, that is, the correct values.     Mobile Formation Coordination and Tracking Control for Multiple Non-holonomic Vehicles

    This paper addresses forward motion control for trajectory tracking and mobile formation coordination for a group of non-holonomic vehicles on SE(2). Firstly, by constructing an intermediate attitude variable which involves vehicles' position information and desired attitude, the translational and rotational control inputs are designed in two stages to solve the trajectory tracking problem. Secondly, the coordination relationships of relative positions and headings are explored thoroughly for a group of non-holonomic vehicles to maintain a mobile formation with rigid body motion constraints. We prove that, except for the cases of parallel formation and translational straight line formation, a mobile formation with strict rigid-body motion can be achieved if and only if the ratios of linear speed to angular speed for each individual vehicle are constants. Motion properties for mobile formation with weak rigid-body motion are also demonstrated. Thereafter, based on the proposed trajectory tracking approach, a distributed mobile formation control law is designed under a directed tree graph. The performance of the proposed controllers is validated by both numerical simulations and experiments

    Design and Development of an Integrated Mobile Robot System for Use in Simple Formations

    In recent years, formation control of autonomous unmanned vehicles has become an active area of research with its many broad applications in areas such as transportation and surveillance. The work presented in this thesis involves the design and implementation of small unmanned ground vehicles to be used in leader-follower formations. This mechatronics project involves breadth in areas of mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering design. A vehicle with a unicycle-type drive mechanism is designed in 3D CAD software and manufactured using 3D printing capabilities. The vehicle is then modeled using the unicycle kinematic equations of motion and simulated in MATLAB/Simulink. Simple motion tasks are then performed onboard the vehicle utilizing the vehicle model via software, and leader-follower formations are implemented with multiple vehicles

    A Practical Coordinated Trajectory Tracking for A Group of Mixed Wheeled Mobile Robots with Communication Delays

    Coordination between a specific mobile robot type has been widely investigated, e.g coordination between unicycles. To extend the applicability of the system, a coordinated trajectory tracking of mixed type of mobile robots is considered. We prove that if a certain type of wheeled mobile robot is able to individually track its own reference, then coordination in tracking with other type of robots can be achieved simply by sharing individual tracking errors. Using two types of wheeled mobile robots, namely unicycle type (a nonholonomic mobile robot) and omni wheels type (a holonomic mobile robot), a coordinated control algorithm can achieve a global asymptotically stable condition of the error dynamics of the systems. Under bidirectional communication between robots as a constraint, the group is able to maintain individual tracking while coordinating the movements with other robots regardless occurring perturbations in the system and delays in communication channels. Simulation results suggest that information sharing between the robots increase the robustness in coordinating individual trajectories. Results also show that delays cause drop in performance similar to the case of no information sharing

    Reactive Control Of Autonomous Dynamical Systems

    This thesis mainly consists of five independent papers concerning the reactive control design of autonomous mobile robots in the context of target tracking and cooperative formation keeping with obstacle avoidance in the static/dynamic environment. Technical contents of this thesis are divided into three parts. The first part consists of the first two papers, which consider the target-tracking and obstacle avoidance in the static environment. Especially, in the static environment, a fundamental issue of reactive control design is the local minima problem(LMP) inherent in the potential field methods(PFMs). Through introducing a state-dependent planned goal, the first paper proposes a switching control strategy to tackle this problem. The control law for the planned goal is presented. When trapped into local minima, the robot can escape from local minima by following the planned goal. The proposed control law also takes into account the presence of possible saturation constraints. In addition, a time-varying continuous control law is proposed in the second paper to tackle this problem. Challenges of finding continuous control solutions of LMP are discussed and explicit design strategies are then proposed. The second part of this thesis deals with target-tracking and obstacle avoidance in the dynamic environment. In the third paper, a reactive control design is presented for omnidirectional mobile robots with limited sensor range to track targets while avoiding static and moving obstacles in a dynamically evolving environment. Towards this end, a multiiii objective control problem is formulated and control is synthesized by generating a potential field force for each objective and combining them through analysis and design. Different from standard potential field methods, the composite potential field described in this paper is time-varying and planned to account for moving obstacles and vehicle motion. In order to accommodate a larger class of mobile robots, the fourth paper proposes a reactive control design for unicycle-type mobile robots. With the relative motion among the mobile robot, targets, and obstacles being formulated in polar coordinates, kinematic control laws achieving target-tracking and obstacle avoidance are synthesized using Lyapunov based technique, and more importantly, the proposed control laws also take into account possible kinematic control saturation constraints. The third part of this thesis investigates the cooperative formation control with collision avoidance. In the fifth paper, firstly, the target tracking and collision avoidance problem for a single agent is studied. Instead of directly extending the single agent controls to the multiagents case, the single agent controls are incorporated with the cooperative control design presented in [1]. The proposed decentralized control is reactive, considers the formation feedback and changes in the communication networks. The proposed control is based on a potential field method, its inherent oscillation problem is also studied to improve group transient performance

    Optimisation-based verification process of obstacle avoidance systems for unicycle-like mobile robots

    This paper presents an optimisation-based verification process for obstacle avoidance systems of a unicycle-like mobile robot. It is a novel approach for the collision avoidance verification process. Local and global optimisation based verification processes are developed to find the worst-case parameters and the worst-case distance between the robot and an obstacle. The kinematic and dynamic model of the unicycle-like mobile robot is first introduced with force and torque as the inputs. The design of the control system is split into two parts. One is velocity and rotation using the robot dynamics, and the other is the incremental motion planning for robot kinematics. The artificial potential field method is chosen as a path planning and obstacle avoidance candidate technique for verification study as it is simple and widely used. Different optimisation algorithms are applied and compared for the purpose of verification. It is shown that even for a simple case study where only mass and inertia variations are considered, a local optimization based verification method may fail to identify the worst case. Two global optimisation methods have been investigated: genetic algorithms (GAs) and GLOBAL algorithms. Both of these methods successfully find the worst case. The verification process confirms that the obstacle avoidance algorithm functions correctly in the presence of all the possible parameter variations

    Safe, Remote-Access Swarm Robotics Research on the Robotarium

    This paper describes the development of the Robotarium -- a remotely accessible, multi-robot research facility. The impetus behind the Robotarium is that multi-robot testbeds constitute an integral and essential part of the multi-agent research cycle, yet they are expensive, complex, and time-consuming to develop, operate, and maintain. These resource constraints, in turn, limit access for large groups of researchers and students, which is what the Robotarium is remedying by providing users with remote access to a state-of-the-art multi-robot test facility. This paper details the design and operation of the Robotarium as well as connects these to the particular considerations one must take when making complex hardware remotely accessible. In particular, safety must be built in already at the design phase without overly constraining which coordinated control programs the users can upload and execute, which calls for minimally invasive safety routines with provable performance guarantees.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, 3 code samples, 72 reference
