Morphology in the Era of Large Surveys

    Get PDF
The study of galaxies has changed dramatically over the past few decades with the advent of large-scale astronomical surveys. These large collaborative efforts have made available high-quality imaging and spectroscopy of hundreds of thousands of systems, providing a body of observations which has significantly enhanced our understanding not only of cosmology and large-scale structure in the universe but also of the astrophysics of galaxy formation and evolution. Throughout these changes, one thing that has remained constant is the role of galaxy morphology as a clue to understanding galaxies. But obtaining morphologies for large numbers of galaxies is challenging; this topic, "Morphology in the era of large surveys", was the subject of a recent discussion meeting at the Royal Astronomical Society, and this "Astronomy and Geophysics" article is a report on that meeting.Comment: Meeting Report article published in the October 2013 issue of the Royal Astronomical Society journal Astronomy and Geophysics. 4 page pdf with colour image

Finnish SMEs and the development of the innovative collaboration platform

    Get PDF
Global patterns of innovative platforms for the collaboration of SMEs have resulted in the formation of SME ecosystems to connect with new markets. Finland is an innovative country, trying its best to form a national SME collaboration platform to later connect to global SME networks. The study investigates factors involved in the development of such collaborative platforms. First, the conceptual framework of collaborative platforms was synthesized from SME networking literature. Then 30 SMEs from Finland were surveyed and analysed by statistical tools. The results provided support for a conceptual framework in terms of a relationship between six factors and their impact on the development of the platform. An implication for managers is that if they are welcoming enough toward a collaborative platform, there will be better evaluation of the financial situation of the company.©2019 The International Society for Professional Innovation Management (ISPIM)fi=vertaisarvioitu|en=peerReviewed

Learning log-based automatic group formation: system design and classroom implementation study

    Get PDF
Collaborative learning in the form of group work is becoming increasingly significant in education since interpersonal skills count in modern society. However, teachers often get overwhelmed by the logistics involved in conducting any group work. Valid support for executing and managing such activities in a timely and informed manner becomes imperative. This research introduces an intelligent system focusing on group formation which consists of a parameter setting module and the group member visualization panel where the results of the created group are shown to the user and can be graded. The system supports teachers by applying algorithms to actual learning log data thereby simplifying the group formation process and saving time for them. A pilot study in a primary school mathematics class proved to have a positive effect on students’ engagement and affections while participating in group activities based on the system-generated groups, thus providing empirical evidence to the practice of Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) systems

Bridging the Sport and Recreation Divide

    Get PDF
In this article we examine sport and recreation\u27s collaborative potential. We begin by identifying some differences between the two fields of study and by acknowledging what heretofore have been some inherent incompatibilities. We discuss how these differences and incompatibilities might be overcome through a paradigm shift based on the fields\u27 common appreciation of the importance of play. We then demonstrate the collaborative potential by illustrating the relevance of play to ameliorating the pervasive obesity problem confronting contemporary society. We conclude by suggesting that an alliance between sport and recreation may result in synergistic effects that strengthen their respective standing within higher education by enhancing contributions to public policy formation, opening new avenues for research, increasing opportunities for research funding, and improving academic offerings

This article discusses the strengthening of the science of public administration in achieving the goals of the state by building an empirical model of the interaction and relations of civil society organizations with the government in the development of decentralization. The concept of collaborative governance that was raised was intended to overcome public problems, implemented by involving multi-stakeholders in planning, implementation, and evaluation through integrated collective agreements in a governance system. This study uses a qualitative approach, and the data are analyzed interactively to answer the issue of interaction and relations between civil society organizations and local governments, especially in Malang Regency, East Java, which has a high level of development dynamics with the heterogeneity of the population. The initiation of cross-stakeholder collaboration in development policy shows the openness of the government in the context of autonomy which can be used as basic capital to improve the quality of services to the community, especially in basic services. The existence of civil society organizations is not only a regional strategic partner but as an agent of development. Interaction and relationships that are built can strengthen the distributive role of government in public affairs. The involvement of civil society organizations as a node of local democracy in regional development can strengthen public administration based on values to realize social equality. Therefore, good collaborative governance which is held must uphold local values as a locomotive driving the formation of strong institutions in implementing the country's vision
