    Co-simulation of Event-B and Ptolemy II Models via FMI

    In the framework of model-based design formal modelling, verification and simulation of safety-critical systems are supported by several methods and tools. Interfacing these tools often becomes challenging for heterogeneous systems. The FMI standard enables integration of different simulation tools through artefacts called Functional Mockup Units (FMU) [1]. The FMI standard is mainly based on the concept of scalability of the simulation as it deals with heterogeneous cyber-physical systems. The combination of discrete behaviour and continuous-time environment is a common case study in hybrid simulation. Moreover, another aspect of the FMI is to enhance the capability of the tools. Thus, a collaborative simulation between the Rodin [2] and Ptolemy [3] is leveraged by both platforms. While Event-B is enhanced by new models of computation of Ptolemy,Ptolemy leverages the expressivity and properties validation (theorem/invariant proofs) implemented by Event-B. The main rationale of the co-simulation between Event-B and Ptolemy relies on the intention of dissimilarity and complementarity of the modelling viewpoints. Event-B provides formal modelling by specifying conditions, actions and properties that manage discrete event behaviour, whereas Ptolemy gives a structural viewpoint in terms of actors, components or functions with relation to concerned behaviour. Thus, the association of Ptolemy and Event-B puts together structural and formal aspects.This paper focuses on the collaborative simulation of models supported by both Ptolemy II and Event-B.     Towards Sophisticated Air Traffic Control System Using Formal Methods

    We propose a general formal modeling and verification of the air traffic control system (ATC). This study is based on the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) standards and recommendations. It provides a sophisticated assistance system that helps in visualizing aircrafts and presents automatic bugs detection. In such a critical safety system, the use of robust formal methods that assure bugs absence is highly required. Therefore, this work suggests a formalism of discrete transition systems based on abstraction and refinement along proofs. These ensure the consistency of the system by means of invariants preservation and deadlock freedom. Hence, all invariants hold permanently providing a handy solution for bugs absence verification. It follows that the said deadlock freedom ensures a continuous running of a given system. This specification and modeling technique enable the system to be corrected by construction. As hybrid systems become ubiquitous and more and more complex, analysis and synthesis techniques are in high demand to design safe hybrid systems. This is however challenging due to the nature of hybrid systems and their designs, and the question of how to formulate and reason their safety problems. Previous work has demonstrated how to extend discrete modelling language Event-B with continuous supports to integrate traditional refinement in hybrid system design. In the same spirit, we extend previous work by proposing a strategy that can coherently refine an abstract hybrid system design with safety constraints down to the concrete one with implementable discrete control that can behave safely. Our proposal is validated on the design of a smart heating system, and we share with our experience

    Integrating formal methods into medical software development : the ASM approach

    Medical devices are safety-critical systems since their malfunctions can seriously compromise human safety. Correct operation of a medical device depends upon the controlling software, whose development should adhere to certification standards. However, these standards provide general descriptions of common software engineering activities without any indication regarding particular methods and techniques to assure safety and reliability. This paper discusses how to integrate the use of a formal approach into the current normative for the medical software development. The rigorous process is based on the Abstract State Machine (ASM) formal method, its refinement principle, and model analysis approaches the method supports. The hemodialysis machine case study is used to show how the ASM-based design process covers most of the engineering activities required by the related standards, and provides rigorous approaches for medical software validation and verification

    A Review of Platforms for the Development of Agent Systems

    Agent-based computing is an active field of research with the goal of building autonomous software of hardware entities. This task is often facilitated by the use of dedicated, specialized frameworks. For almost thirty years, many such agent platforms have been developed. Meanwhile, some of them have been abandoned, others continue their development and new platforms are released. This paper presents a up-to-date review of the existing agent platforms and also a historical perspective of this domain. It aims to serve as a reference point for people interested in developing agent systems. This work details the main characteristics of the included agent platforms, together with links to specific projects where they have been used. It distinguishes between the active platforms and those no longer under development or with unclear status. It also classifies the agent platforms as general purpose ones, free or commercial, and specialized ones, which can be used for particular types of applications.Comment: 40 pages, 2 figures, 9 tables, 83 reference

    A formal approach for correct-by-construction system substitution

    Safety-critical systems depend on the fact that their software components provide services that behave correctly (i.e. satisfy their requirements). Additionally, in many cases, these systems have to be adapted or reconfigured in case of failures or when changes in requirements or in quality of service occur. When these changes appear at the software level, they can be handled by the notion of substitution. Indeed, the software component of the source system can be substituted by another software component to build a new target system. In the case of safety-critical systems, it is mandatory that this operation enforces that the new target system behaves correctly by preserving the safety properties of the source system during and after the substitution operation. In this thesis, the studied systems are modeled as state-transition systems. In order to model system substitution, the Event-B method has been selected as it is well suited to model such state-transition systems and it provides the benefits of refinement, proof and the availability of a strong tooling with the Rodin Platform. This thesis provides a generic model for system substitution that entails different situations like cold start and warm start as well as the possibility of system degradation, upgrade or equivalence substitutions. This proposal is first used to formalize substitution in the case of discrete systems applied to web services compensation and allowed modeling correct compensation. Then, it is also used for systems characterized by continuous behaviors like hybrid systems. To model continuous behaviors with Event-B, the Theory plug-in for Rodin is investigated and proved successful for modeling hybrid systems. Afterwards, a correct substitution mechanism for systems with continuous behaviors is proposed. A safety envelope for the output of the system is taken as the safety requirement. Finally, the proposed approach is generalized, enabling the derivation of the previously defined models for web services compensation through refinement, and the reuse of proofs across system models
