Inconvenient Truths, and Changes to Believe In: Foreword to the Forum

This is a foreword to four papers that originated in the special session, “Ethnic Diversity in Music Theory: Voices from the Field,” at the November 2007 meeting of the Society for Music Theory (Baltimore). Inspired by the impassioned discussion period following the talks, the Committee on Diversity arranged to publish these papers to capture the session’s energy and channel it into a more permanent medium. This foreword, written by the moderator, highlights several issues that surfaced in the papers and in the ensuing discussion. The issues coalesce into a call for new action: diversity efforts have not worked in the forms known, but with reengineering they are vital for securing a future in the SMT for all

It presents the most popular debriefing techniques and, hence, can be used as a reference manual by educators to help them achieve their intended debriefing objectives. The overarching objective of debriefing is to promote reflection and improve patient safety awareness at an individual and a team level. This book provides clear explanations of what constitutes a valuable and effective debriefing, and presents the various approaches that can be used and how debriefing differs from feedback. It includes key recommendations on aspects that directly or indirectly impact debriefing with different populations of learners such as students or qualified healthcare professionals of various levels of seniority. This book can also be used as a survival guide for both simulation educators and clinicians during debriefings. It includes several useful sections explaining the different phases of a debriefing session, which help learners develop and consolidate their knowledge, and identify potential knowledge or performance gaps and near misses. The underlying philosophy of this book is to also promote profound respect for the trainee by using a non-offensive debriefing approach. Debriefing facilitators will appreciate the several key sentences that will help them lead and engage their learners in the various phases of expressing their emotions and analyzing their experience and actions

The Twenty-Fifth Amendment: A Personal Remembrance

In this Article, John D. Feerick describes his work on issues relating to presidential succession and disability—spanning from just after his graduation from Fordham Law School in 1961 to the present. The Article explains how he came to write a 1963 Fordham Law Review article on the subject that became a key source for the framers of the amendment; recounts his work in assisting lawmakers in drafting the amendment; recalls his leadership in the American Bar Association’s nationwide campaign for the amendment’s ratification; and gives an overview of his work related to the amendment following it ratification
