    Spatiotemporal Attention Enhances Lidar-Based Robot Navigation in Dynamic Environments

    Foresighted robot navigation in dynamic indoor environments with cost-efficient hardware necessitates the use of a lightweight yet dependable controller. So inferring the scene dynamics from sensor readings without explicit object tracking is a pivotal aspect of foresighted navigation among pedestrians. In this paper, we introduce a spatiotemporal attention pipeline for enhanced navigation based on 2D lidar sensor readings. This pipeline is complemented by a novel lidar-state representation that emphasizes dynamic obstacles over static ones. Subsequently, the attention mechanism enables selective scene perception across both space and time, resulting in improved overall navigation performance within dynamic scenarios. We thoroughly evaluated the approach in different scenarios and simulators, finding good generalization to unseen environments. The results demonstrate outstanding performance compared to state-of-the-art methods, thereby enabling the seamless deployment of the learned controller on a real robot

    Robot Navigation in Human Environments

    For the near future, we envision service robots that will help us with everyday chores in home, office, and urban environments. These robots need to work in environments that were designed for humans and they have to collaborate with humans to fulfill their tasks. In this thesis, we propose new methods for communicating, transferring knowledge, and collaborating between humans and robots in four different navigation tasks. In the first application, we investigate how automated services for giving wayfinding directions can be improved to better address the needs of the human recipients. We propose a novel method based on inverse reinforcement learning that learns from a corpus of human-written route descriptions what amount and type of information a route description should contain. By imitating the human teachers' description style, our algorithm produces new route descriptions that sound similarly natural and convey similar information content, as we show in a user study. In the second application, we investigate how robots can leverage background information provided by humans for exploring an unknown environment more efficiently. We propose an algorithm for exploiting user-provided information such as sketches or floor plans by combining a global exploration strategy based on the solution of a traveling salesman problem with a local nearest-frontier-first exploration scheme. Our experiments show that the exploration tours are significantly shorter and that our system allows the user to effectively select the areas that the robot should explore. In the second part of this thesis, we focus on humanoid robots in home and office environments. The human-like body plan allows humanoid robots to navigate in environments and operate tools that were designed for humans, making humanoid robots suitable for a wide range of applications. As localization and mapping are prerequisites for all navigation tasks, we first introduce a novel feature descriptor for RGB-D sensor data and integrate this building block into an appearance-based simultaneous localization and mapping system that we adapt and optimize for the usage on humanoid robots. Our optimized system is able to track a real Nao humanoid robot more accurately and more robustly than existing approaches. As the third application, we investigate how humanoid robots can cover known environments efficiently with their camera, for example for inspection or search tasks. We extend an existing next-best-view approach by integrating inverse reachability maps, allowing us to efficiently sample and check collision-free full-body poses. Our approach enables the robot to inspect as much of the environment as possible. In our fourth application, we extend the coverage scenario to environments that also include articulated objects that the robot has to actively manipulate to uncover obstructed regions. We introduce algorithms for navigation subtasks that run highly parallelized on graphics processing units for embedded devices. Together with a novel heuristic for estimating utility maps, our system allows to find high-utility camera poses for efficiently covering environments with articulated objects. All techniques presented in this thesis were implemented in software and thoroughly evaluated in user studies, simulations, and experiments in both artificial and real-world environments. Our approaches advance the state of the art towards universally usable robots in everyday environments.Roboternavigation in menschlichen Umgebungen In naher Zukunft erwarten wir Serviceroboter, die uns im Haushalt, im Büro und in der Stadt alltägliche Arbeiten abnehmen. Diese Roboter müssen in für Menschen gebauten Umgebungen zurechtkommen und sie müssen mit Menschen zusammenarbeiten um ihre Aufgaben zu erledigen. In dieser Arbeit schlagen wir neue Methoden für die Kommunikation, Wissenstransfer und Zusammenarbeit zwischen Menschen und Robotern bei Navigationsaufgaben in vier Anwendungen vor. In der ersten Anwendung untersuchen wir, wie automatisierte Dienste zur Generierung von Wegbeschreibungen verbessert werden können, um die Beschreibungen besser an die Bedürfnisse der Empfänger anzupassen. Wir schlagen eine neue Methode vor, die inverses bestärkendes Lernen nutzt, um aus einem Korpus von von Menschen geschriebenen Wegbeschreibungen zu lernen, wie viel und welche Art von Information eine Wegbeschreibung enthalten sollte. Indem unser Algorithmus den Stil der Wegbeschreibungen der menschlichen Lehrer imitiert, kann der Algorithmus neue Wegbeschreibungen erzeugen, die sich ähnlich natürlich anhören und einen ähnlichen Informationsgehalt vermitteln, was wir in einer Benutzerstudie zeigen. In der zweiten Anwendung untersuchen wir, wie Roboter von Menschen bereitgestellte Hintergrundinformationen nutzen können, um eine bisher unbekannte Umgebung schneller zu erkunden. Wir schlagen einen Algorithmus vor, der Hintergrundinformationen wie Gebäudegrundrisse oder Skizzen nutzt, indem er eine globale Explorationsstrategie basierend auf der Lösung eines Problems des Handlungsreisenden kombiniert mit einer lokalen Explorationsstrategie. Unsere Experimente zeigen, dass die Erkundungstouren signifikant kürzer werden und dass der Benutzer mit unserem System effektiv die zu erkundenden Regionen spezifizieren kann. Der zweite Teil dieser Arbeit konzentriert sich auf humanoide Roboter in Umgebungen zu Hause und im Büro. Der menschenähnliche Körperbau ermöglicht es humanoiden Robotern, in Umgebungen zu navigieren und Werkzeuge zu benutzen, die für Menschen gebaut wurden, wodurch humanoide Roboter für vielfältige Aufgaben einsetzbar sind. Da Lokalisierung und Kartierung Grundvoraussetzungen für alle Navigationsaufgaben sind, führen wir zunächst einen neuen Merkmalsdeskriptor für RGB-D-Sensordaten ein und integrieren diesen Baustein in ein erscheinungsbasiertes simultanes Lokalisierungs- und Kartierungsverfahren, das wir an die Besonderheiten von humanoiden Robotern anpassen und optimieren. Unser System kann die Position eines realen humanoiden Roboters genauer und robuster verfolgen, als es mit existierenden Ansätzen möglich ist. Als dritte Anwendung untersuchen wir, wie humanoide Roboter bekannte Umgebungen effizient mit ihrer Kamera abdecken können, beispielsweise zu Inspektionszwecken oder zum Suchen eines Gegenstands. Wir erweitern ein bestehendes Verfahren, das die nächstbeste Beobachtungsposition berechnet, durch inverse Erreichbarkeitskarten, wodurch wir kollisionsfreie Ganzkörperposen effizient generieren und prüfen können. Unser Ansatz ermöglicht es dem Roboter, so viel wie möglich von der Umgebung zu untersuchen. In unserer vierten Anwendung erweitern wir dieses Szenario um Umgebungen, die auch bewegbare Gegenstände enthalten, die der Roboter aktiv bewegen muss um verdeckte Regionen zu sehen. Wir führen Algorithmen für Teilprobleme ein, die hoch parallelisiert auf Grafikkarten von eingebetteten Systemen ausgeführt werden. Zusammen mit einer neuen Heuristik zur Schätzung von Nutzenkarten ermöglicht dies unserem System Beobachtungspunkte mit hohem Nutzen zu finden, um Umgebungen mit bewegbaren Objekten effizient zu inspizieren. Alle vorgestellten Techniken wurden in Software implementiert und sorgfältig evaluiert in Benutzerstudien, Simulationen und Experimenten in künstlichen und realen Umgebungen.     Navigation behavior design and representations for a people aware mobile robot system

    There are millions of robots in operation around the world today, and almost all of them operate on factory floors in isolation from people. However, it is now becoming clear that robots can provide much more value assisting people in daily tasks in human environments. Perhaps the most fundamental capability for a mobile robot is navigating from one location to another. Advances in mapping and motion planning research in the past decades made indoor navigation a commodity for mobile robots. Yet, questions remain on how the robots should move around humans. This thesis advocates the use of semantic maps and spatial rules of engagement to enable non-expert users to effortlessly interact with and control a mobile robot. A core concept explored in this thesis is the Tour Scenario, where the task is to familiarize a mobile robot to a new environment after it is first shipped and unpacked in a home or office setting. During the tour, the robot follows the user and creates a semantic representation of the environment. The user labels objects, landmarks and locations by performing pointing gestures and using the robot's user interface. The spatial semantic information is meaningful to humans, as it allows providing commands to the robot such as ``bring me a cup from the kitchen table". While the robot is navigating towards the goal, it should not treat nearby humans as obstacles and should move in a socially acceptable manner. Three main navigation behaviors are studied in this work. The first behavior is the point-to-point navigation. The navigation planner presented in this thesis borrows ideas from human-human spatial interactions, and takes into account personal spaces as well as reactions of people who are in close proximity to the trajectory of the robot. The second navigation behavior is person following. After the description of a basic following behavior, a user study on person following for telepresence robots is presented. Additionally, situation awareness for person following is demonstrated, where the robot facilitates tasks by predicting the intent of the user and utilizing the semantic map. The third behavior is person guidance. A tour-guide robot is presented with a particular application for visually impaired users.Ph.D

    Efficient development of complex statecharts

    Modeling systems based on graphical formalisms, such as Statecharts, has become standard practice in the design of embedded devices. Using paradigms established so far often results in complex models that are difficult to comprehend and maintain. To overcome this, we present a methodology to support the easy development and understanding of complex Statecharts. Central to our approach is the use of secondary notations to aid readability. We employ an automated layout mechanism to transform any given Statechart to a Statechart Normal Form. The Kiel Integrated Environment for Layout is a prototypical modeling tool to explore our editing, browsing and simulation paradigms in the design of complex reactive systems. An empirical study on the usability and practicability of our Statechart editing techniques, including a Statechart layout comparison, indicates significant performance improvements in terms of editing speed and model comprehension compared to traditional modeling approaches

    Challenges arising from an increasing traffic demand, limited resource availability and growing quality expectations of the customers can only be met successfully, if each transport mode is regarded as an intelligent transportation system itself, but also as part of one intelligent transportation system with “intelligent” intramodal and intermodal interfaces. This topic is well reflected in the Third International Conference on “Models and Technologies for Intelligent Transportation Systems” which took place in Dresden 2013 (previous editions: Rome 2009, Leuven 2011). With its variety of traffic management problems that can be solved using similar methods and technologies, but with application specific models, objective functions and constraints the conference stands for an intensive exchange between theory and practice and the presentation of case studies for all transport modes and gives a discussion forum for control engineers, computer scientists, mathematicians and other researchers and practitioners. The present book comprises fifty short papers accepted for presentation at the Third Edition of the conference. All submissions have undergone intensive reviews by the organisers of the special sessions, the members of the scientific and technical advisory committees and further external experts in the field. Like the conference itself the proceedings are structured in twelve streams: the more model-oriented streams of Road-Bound Public Transport Management, Modelling and Control of Urban Traffic Flow, Railway Traffic Management in four different sessions, Air Traffic Management, Water Traffic and Traffic and Transit Assignment, as well as the technology-oriented streams of Floating Car Data, Localisation Technologies for Intelligent Transportation Systems and Image Processing in Transportation.     Footprints Across the South: Bartram\u27s Trail Revisited

    Over the past three decades, a tireless group of volunteers, funded by donations and small grants, has laid out the “Bartram Trail.” Drawn on maps, marked by metal signs beside highways and city streets and by blazes on trees, the trail follows the overall pathway of the eighteenth-century naturalist. Francis Harper’s edition of Bartram’s Travels led the way, identifying most of Bartram’s sites and species. More recently, Brad Sanders has given detailed directions to Bartram’s locations and present-day sites along the trail. Charles D. Spornick, Alan R. Cattier, and Robert J. Greene have published a guide for outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs that follows Bartram’s path. Others have documented the plants and animals that Bartram identified. The professional and avocational botanists are more qualified than I to discuss the whereabouts of these species and to describe them in modern science’s terms. This book is a view of the early twenty-first-century landscapes along Bartram’s trail. I have met the people who live there, seen and smelled the industries that have sunk their steel and concrete roots into the soil of his venues.     A COMPARISON BETWEEN MOTIVATIONS AND PERSONALITY TRAITS IN RELIGIOUS TOURISTS AND CRUISE SHIP TOURISTS

    The purpose of this paper is to analyze the motivations and the personality traits that characterize tourists who choose religious travels versus cruises. Participating in the research were 683 Italian tourists (345 males and 338 females, age range 18–63 years); 483 who went to a pilgrimage travel and 200 who chose a cruise ship in the Mediterranean Sea. Both groups of tourists completed the Travel Motivation Scale and the Big Five Questionnaire. Results show that different motivations and personality traits characterize the different types of tourists and, further, that motivations for traveling are predicted by specific —some similar, other divergent— personality trait

    Introduction to Development Engineering

    This open access textbook introduces the emerging field of Development Engineering and its constituent theories, methods, and applications. It is both a teaching text for students and a resource for researchers and practitioners engaged in the design and scaling of technologies for low-resource communities. The scope is broad, ranging from the development of mobile applications for low-literacy users to hardware and software solutions for providing electricity and water in remote settings. It is also highly interdisciplinary, drawing on methods and theory from the social sciences as well as engineering and the natural sciences. The opening section reviews the history of “technology-for-development” research, and presents a framework that formalizes this body of work and begins its transformation into an academic discipline. It identifies common challenges in development and explains the book’s iterative approach of “innovation, implementation, evaluation, adaptation.” Each of the next six thematic sections focuses on a different sector: energy and environment; market performance; education and labor; water, sanitation and health; digital governance; and connectivity. These thematic sections contain case studies from landmark research that directly integrates engineering innovation with technically rigorous methods from the social sciences. Each case study describes the design, evaluation, and/or scaling of a technology in the field and follows a single form, with common elements and discussion questions, to create continuity and pedagogical consistency. Together, they highlight successful solutions to development challenges, while also analyzing the rarely discussed failures. The book concludes by reiterating the core principles of development engineering illustrated in the case studies, highlighting common challenges that engineers and scientists will face in designing technology interventions that sustainably accelerate economic development. Development Engineering provides, for the first time, a coherent intellectual framework for attacking the challenges of poverty and global climate change through the design of better technologies. It offers the rigorous discipline needed to channel the energy of a new generation of scientists and engineers toward advancing social justice and improved living conditions in low-resource communities around the world
