    Exploratory study to explore the role of ICT in the process of knowledge management in an Indian business environment

    In the 21st century and the emergence of a digital economy, knowledge and the knowledge base economy are rapidly growing. To effectively be able to understand the processes involved in the creating, managing and sharing of knowledge management in the business environment is critical to the success of an organization. This study builds on the previous research of the authors on the enablers of knowledge management by identifying the relationship between the enablers of knowledge management and the role played by information communication technologies (ICT) and ICT infrastructure in a business setting. This paper provides the findings of a survey collected from the four major Indian cities (Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Villupuram) regarding their views and opinions about the enablers of knowledge management in business setting. A total of 80 organizations participated in the study with 100 participants in each city. The results show that ICT and ICT infrastructure can play a critical role in the creating, managing and sharing of knowledge in an Indian business environment

    A Likelihood-Ratio Based Forensic Voice Comparison in Standard Thai

    This research uses a likelihood ratio (LR) framework to assess the discriminatory power of a range of acoustic parameters extracted from speech samples produced by male speakers of Standard Thai. The thesis aims to answer two main questions: 1) to what extent the tested linguistic-phonetic segments of Standard Thai perform in forensic voice comparison (FVC); and 2) how such linguistic-phonetic segments are profitably combined through logistic regression using the FoCal Toolkit (Brümmer, 2007). The segments focused on in this study are the four consonants /s, ʨh, n, m/ and the two diphthongs [ɔi, ai]. First of all, using the alveolar fricative /s/, two different sets of features were compared in terms of their performance in FVC. The first comprised the spectrum-based distributional features of four spectral moments, namely mean, variance, skew and kurtosis; the second consisted of the coefficients of the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCTs) applied to a spectrum. As DCTs were found to perform better, they were subsequently used to model the consonant spectrum of the remaining consonants. The consonant spectrum was extracted at the center point of the /s, ʨh, n, m/ consonants with a Hamming window of 31.25 msec. For the diphthongs [ɔi] - [nɔi L] and [ai] - [mai HL], the cubic polynomials fitted to the F2 and F1-F3 formants were tested separately. The quadratic polynomials fitted to the tonal F0 contours of [ɔi] - [nɔi L] and [ai] - [mai HL] were tested as well. Long-term F0 distribution (LTF0) was also trialed. The results show the promising discriminatory power of the Standard Thai acoustic features and segments tested in this thesis. The main findings are as follows. 1. The fricative /s/ performed better with the DCTs (Cllr = 0.70) than with the spectral moments (Cllr = 0.92). 2. The nasals /n, m/ (Cllr = 0.47) performed better than the affricate /tɕh/ (Cllr = 0.54) and the fricative /s/ (Cllr = 0.70) when their DCT coefficients were parameterized. 3. F1-F3 trajectories (Cllr = 0.42 and Cllr = 0.49) outperformed F2 trajectory (Cllr = 0.69 and Cllr = 0.67) for both diphthongs [ɔi] and [ai]. 4. F1-F3 trajectories of the diphthong [ɔi] (Cllr = 0.42) outperformed those of [ai] (Cllr = 0.49). 5. Tonal F0 (Cllr = 0.52) outperformed LTF0 (Cllr = 0.74). 6. Overall, better results were obtained when DCTs of /n/ - [na: HL] and /n/ - [nɔi L] were fused. (Cllr = 0.40 with the largest consistent-with-fact SSLog10LR = 2.53). In light of the findings, we can conclude that Standard Thai is generally amenable to FVC, especially when linguistic-phonetic segments are being combined; it is recommended that the latter procedure be followed when dealing with forensically realistic casework

    The Effect Of Acoustic Variability On Automatic Speaker Recognition Systems

    This thesis examines the influence of acoustic variability on automatic speaker recognition systems (ASRs) with three aims. i. To measure ASR performance under 5 commonly encountered acoustic conditions; ii. To contribute towards ASR system development with the provision of new research data; iii. To assess ASR suitability for forensic speaker comparison (FSC) application and investigative/pre-forensic use. The thesis begins with a literature review and explanation of relevant technical terms. Five categories of research experiments then examine ASR performance, reflective of conditions influencing speech quantity (inhibitors) and speech quality (contaminants), acknowledging quality often influences quantity. Experiments pertain to: net speech duration, signal to noise ratio (SNR), reverberation, frequency bandwidth and transcoding (codecs). The ASR system is placed under scrutiny with examination of settings and optimum conditions (e.g. matched/unmatched test audio and speaker models). Output is examined in relation to baseline performance and metrics assist in informing if ASRs should be applied to suboptimal audio recordings. Results indicate that modern ASRs are relatively resilient to low and moderate levels of the acoustic contaminants and inhibitors examined, whilst remaining sensitive to higher levels. The thesis provides discussion on issues such as the complexity and fragility of the speech signal path, speaker variability, difficulty in measuring conditions and mitigation (thresholds and settings). The application of ASRs to casework is discussed with recommendations, acknowledging the different modes of operation (e.g. investigative usage) and current UK limitations regarding presenting ASR output as evidence in criminal trials. In summary, and in the context of acoustic variability, the thesis recommends that ASRs could be applied to pre-forensic cases, accepting extraneous issues endure which require governance such as validation of method (ASR standardisation) and population data selection. However, ASRs remain unsuitable for broad forensic application with many acoustic conditions causing irrecoverable speech data loss contributing to high error rates

    Effects of forensically-relevant facial concealment on acoustic and perceptual properties of consonants

    This thesis offers a thorough investigation into the effects of forensically-relevant facial concealment on speech acoustics and perception. Specifically, it explores the extent to which selected acoustic-phonetic and auditory-perceptual properties of consonants are affected when the talker is wearing ‘facewear’ while speaking. In this context, the term ‘facewear’ refers to the various types of face-concealing garments and headgear that are worn by people in common daily communication situations; for work and leisure, or as an expression of religious, social and cultural affiliation (e.g. surgical masks, motorcycle helmets, ski and cycling masks, or full-face veils such as the niqāb). It also denotes the face or head coverings that are typically used as deliberate (visual) disguises during the commission of crimes and in situations of public disorder (e.g. balaclavas, hooded sweatshirts, or scarves). The present research centres on the question: does facewear influence the way that consonants are produced, transmitted, and perceived? To examine the effects of facewear on the acoustic speech signal, various intensity, spectral, and temporal properties of spoken English consonants were measured. It was found that facewear can considerably alter the acoustic-phonetic characteristics of consonants. This was likely to be the result of both deliberate and involuntary changes to the talker’s speech productions, and of sound energy absorption by the facewear material. The perceptual consequences of the acoustic modifications to speech were assessed by way of a consonant identification study and a talker discrimination study. The results of these studies showed that auditory-only and auditory-visual consonant intelligibility, as well as the discrimination of unfamiliar talkers, may be greatly compromised when the observer’s judgements are based on ‘facewear speech’. The findings reported in this thesis contribute to our understanding of how auditory and visual information interact during natural speech processing. Furthermore, the results have important practical implications for legal cases in which speech produced through facewear is of pivotal importance. Forensic speech scientists are therefore advised to take the possible effects of facewear on speech into account when interpreting the outcome of their acoustic and auditory analyses of evidential speech recordings, and when evaluating the reliability of earwitness testimony

    Forging a Stable Relationship?: Bridging the Law and Forensic Science Divide in the Academy

    The marriage of law and science has most often been represented as discordant. While the law/science divide meme is hardly novel, concerns over the potentially deleterious coupling within the criminal justice system may have reached fever pitch. There is a growing chorus of disapproval addressed to ‘forensic science’, accompanied by the denigration of legal professionals for being unable or unwilling to forge a symbiotic relationship with forensic scientists. The 2009 National Academy of Sciences Report on forensic science heralds the latest call for greater collaboration between ‘law’ and ‘science’, particularly in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) yet little reaction has been apparent amid law and science faculties. To investigate the potential for interdisciplinary cooperation, the authors received funding for a project: ‘Lowering the Drawbridges: Forensic and Legal Education in the 21st Century’, hoping to stimulate both law and forensic science educators to seek mutually beneficial solutions to common educational problems and build vital connections in the academy. A workshop held in the UK, attended by academics and practitioners from scientific, policing, and legal backgrounds marked the commencement of the project. This paper outlines some of the workshop conclusions to elucidate areas of dissent and consensus, and where further dialogue is required, but aims to strike a note of optimism that the ‘cultural divide’ should not be taken to be so wide as to be beyond the legal and forensic science academy to bridge. The authors seek to demonstrate that legal and forensic science educators can work cooperatively to respond to critics and forge new paths in learning and teaching, creating an opportunity to take stock and enrich our discipline as well as answer critics. As Latham (2010:34) exhorts, we are not interested in turning lawyers into scientists and vice versa, but building a foundation upon which they can build during their professional lives: “Instead of melding the two cultures, we need to establish conditions of cooperation, mutual respect, and mutual reliance between them.” Law and forensic science educators should, and can assist with the building of a mutual understanding between forensic scientists and legal professionals, a significant step on the road to answering calls for the professions to minimise some of the risks associated with the use of forensic science in the criminal process.     A therapeutic elimination of “belief” and “desire” from causal accounts of action

    This introduction sets out the objectives, topic, method and structure of this thesis. I describe philosophical folk psychology and the roles that it is presumed to play in action choice, interpersonal understanding and reason giving. Philosophical folk psychology – particularly when expressed as belief-desire psychology – is suggested by some as a way to describe all three of these phenomena under a single model. I argue, however, that this comes at the cost of a number of unwarranted commitments which give rise to philosophical problems. I introduce a handful of influential thinkers who have advanced folk psychological positions and also some contemporary examples of philosophers addressing problems arising directly from it. I then introduce the diagnostic-therapeutic intent of this thesis, grounded in a reading of Wittgenstein’s approach to philosophy through the later work of Gordon Baker. Thereafter I set out the two-part structure of the thesis and briefly outline the chapters
