JavaFlow : a Java DataFlow Machine
textThe JavaFlow, a Java DataFlow Machine is a machine design concept implementing a Java Virtual Machine aimed at addressing technology roadmap issues along with the ability to effectively utilize and manage very large numbers of processing cores. Specific design challenges addressed include: design complexity through a common set of repeatable structures; low power by featuring unused circuits and ability to power off sections of the chip; clock propagation and wire limits by using locality to bring data to processing elements and a Globally Asynchronous Locally Synchronous (GALS) design; and reliability by allowing portions of the design to be bypassed in case of failures. A Data Flow Architecture is used with multiple heterogeneous networks to connect processing elements capable of executing a single Java ByteCode instruction. Whole methods are cached in this DataFlow fabric, and the networks plus distributed intelligence are used for their management and execution. A mesh network is used for the DataFlow transfers; two ordered networks are used for management and control flow mapping; and multiple high speed rings are used to access the storage subsystem and a controlling General Purpose Processor (GPP). Analysis of benchmarks demonstrates the potential for this design concept. The design process was initiated by analyzing SPEC JVM benchmarks which identified a small number methods contributing to a significant percentage of the overall ByteCode operations. Additional analysis established static instruction mixes to prioritize the types of processing elements used in the DataFlow Fabric. The overall objective of the machine is to provide multi-threading performance for Java Methods deployed to this DataFlow fabric. With advances in technology it is envisioned that from 1,000 to 10,000 cores/instructions could be deployed and managed using this structure. This size of DataFlow fabric would allow all the key methods from the SPEC benchmarks to be resident. A baseline configuration is defined with a compressed dataflow structure and then compared to multiple configurations of instruction assignments and clock relationships. Using a series of methods from the SPEC benchmark running independently, IPC (Instructions per Cycle) performance of the sparsely populated heterogeneous structure is 40% of the baseline. The average ratio of instructions to required nodes is 3.5. Parallelism in declarative languages
Imperative programming languages were initially built for uniprocessor systems that evolved out of the Von Neumann machine model. This model of storage oriented computation blocks parallelism and increases the cost of parallel program development and porting. Declarative languages based on mathematical models of computation, seem more suitable for the development of parallel programs. In the first part of this thesis we examine different language families under the declarative paradigm: functional, logic, and constraint languages. Functional languages are based on the abstract model of functions and (lamda)-calculus. They were initially developed for symbolic computation, but today they are commonly used in numerical analysis and many other application areas. Pure lisp is a widely known member of this class. Logic languages are based on first order predicate calculus. Although they were initially developed for theorem proving, fifth generation operating systems are written in them. Most logic languages are descendants or distant relatives of Prolog. Constraint languages are related to logic languages. In a constraint language you define a program object by placing constraints on its structure and its behavior. They were initially used in graphics applications, but today researchers work on using them in parallel computation. Here we will compare and contrast the language classes above, locate advantages and deficiencies, and explain different choices made by language implementors. In the second part of thesis we describe a front end for the CONSUL, a prototype constraint language for programming multiprocessors. The most important features of the front end are compact representation of constraints, type definitions, functional use of relations, and the ability to split programs into multiple files

CATA: Criticality aware task acceleration for multicore processors
Managing criticality in task-based programming models opens a wide range of performance and power optimization opportunities in future manycore systems. Criticality aware task schedulers can benefit from these opportunities by scheduling tasks to the most appropriate cores. However, these schedulers may suffer from priority inversion and static binding problems that limit their expected improvements. Based on the observation that task criticality information can be exploited to drive hardware reconfigurations, we propose a Criticality Aware Task Acceleration (CATA) mechanism that dynamically adapts the computational power of a task depending on its criticality. As a result, CATA achieves significant improvements over a baseline static scheduler, reaching average improvements up to 18.4% in execution time and 30.1% in Energy-Delay Product (EDP) on a simulated 32-core system. The cost of reconfiguring hardware by means of a software-only solution rises with the number of cores due to lock contention and reconfiguration overhead. Therefore, novel architectural support is proposed to eliminate these overheads on future manycore systems. This architectural support minimally extends hardware structures already present in current processors, which allows further improvements in performance with negligible overhead. As a consequence, average improvements of up to 20.4% in execution time and 34.0% in EDP are obtained, outperforming state-of-the-art acceleration proposals not aware of task criticality.This work has been supported by the Spanish Government (grant SEV2015-0493, SEV-2011-00067 of the Severo Ochoa

Static Analysis of Run-Time Errors in Embedded Real-Time Parallel C Programs
We present a static analysis by Abstract Interpretation to check for run-time
errors in parallel and multi-threaded C programs. Following our work on
Astr\'ee, we focus on embedded critical programs without recursion nor dynamic
memory allocation, but extend the analysis to a static set of threads
communicating implicitly through a shared memory and explicitly using a finite
set of mutual exclusion locks, and scheduled according to a real-time
scheduling policy and fixed priorities. Our method is thread-modular. It is
based on a slightly modified non-parallel analysis that, when analyzing a
thread, applies and enriches an abstract set of thread interferences. An
iterator then re-analyzes each thread in turn until interferences stabilize. We
prove the soundness of our method with respect to the sequential consistency
semantics, but also with respect to a reasonable weakly consistent memory
semantics. We also show how to take into account mutual exclusion and thread
priorities through a partitioning over an abstraction of the scheduler state.
We present preliminary experimental results analyzing an industrial program
with our prototype, Th\'es\'ee, and demonstrate the scalability of our
approach
Parallélisation massive des algorithmes de branchement
Les problèmes d'optimisation et de recherche sont souvent NP-complets et des techniques de force brute doivent généralement être mises en œuvre pour trouver des solutions exactes. Des problèmes tels que le regroupement de gènes en bio-informatique ou la recherche de routes optimales dans les réseaux de distribution peuvent être résolus en temps exponentiel à l'aide de stratégies de branchement récursif. Néanmoins, ces algorithmes deviennent peu pratiques au-delà de certaines tailles d'instances en raison du grand nombre de scénarios à explorer, pour lesquels des techniques de parallélisation sont nécessaires pour améliorer les performances.
Dans des travaux antérieurs, des techniques centralisées et décentralisées ont été mises en œuvre afin d'augmenter le parallélisme des algorithmes de branchement tout en essayant de réduire les coûts de communication, qui jouent un rôle important dans les implémentations massivement parallèles en raison des messages passant entre les processus.
Ainsi, notre travail consiste à développer une bibliothèque entièrement générique en C++, nommée GemPBA, pour accélérer presque tous les algorithmes de branchement avec une parallélisation massive, ainsi que le développement d'un outil novateur et simpliste d'équilibrage de charge dynamique pour réduire le nombre de messages transmis en envoyant les tâches prioritaires en premier. Notre approche utilise une stratégie hybride centralisée-décentralisée, qui fait appel à un processus central chargé d'attribuer les rôles des travailleurs par des messages de quelques bits,
telles que les tâches n'ont pas besoin de passer par un processeur central.
De plus, un processeur en fonctionnement génère de nouvelles tâches si et seulement s'il y a des processeurs disponibles pour les recevoir, garantissant ainsi leur transfert, ce qui réduit considérablement les coûts de communication.
Nous avons réalisé nos expériences sur le problème de la couverture minimale de sommets, qui a montré des résultats remarquables, étant capable de résoudre même les graphes DIMACS les plus difficiles avec un simple algorithme MVC.Abstract: Optimization and search problems are often NP-complete, and brute-force techniques
must typically be implemented to find exact solutions. Problems such as clustering
genes in bioinformatics or finding optimal routes in delivery networks can be
solved in exponential-time using recursive branching strategies. Nevertheless, these
algorithms become impractical above certain instance sizes due to the large number of
scenarios that need to be explored, for which parallelization techniques are necessary
to improve the performance.
In previous works, centralized and decentralized techniques have been implemented
aiming to scale up parallelism on branching algorithms whilst attempting to
reduce communication overhead, which plays a significant role in massively parallel
implementations due to the messages passing across processes.
Thus, our work consists of the development of a fully generic library in C++,
named GemPBA, to speed up almost any branching algorithms with massive parallelization,
along with the development of a novel and simplistic Dynamic Load Balancing
tool to reduce the number of passed messages by sending high priority tasks
first. Our approach uses a hybrid centralized-decentralized strategy, which makes use
of a center process in charge of assigning worker roles by messages of a few bits of
size, such that tasks do not need to pass through a center processor.
Also, a working processor will spawn new tasks if and only if there are available
processors to receive them, thus, guaranteeing its transfer, and thereby the communication
overhead is notably decreased.
We performed our experiments on the Minimum Vertex Cover problem, which showed
remarkable results, being capable of solving even the toughest DIMACS graphs
with a simple MVC algorithm
