    Benchmarking the two-dimensional finite difference synthetic seismogram code

    During the past six months, the two-dimensional finite difference synthetic seismogram code was installed and run on a number of different computer systems. The results were compared for timing, accuracy and the ease with which the code was adapted to each system. This report documents the software modifications and the method used to implement the finite difference code on each computer, and presents the results of the benchmark survey.Funding was provided by the Office of Naval Research under Contract No. N00014-89-J-1012

    Ada (trademark) projects at NASA. Runtime environment issues and recommendations

    Ada practitioners should use this document to discuss and establish common short term requirements for Ada runtime environments. The major current Ada runtime environment issues are identified through the analysis of some of the Ada efforts at NASA and other research centers. The runtime environment characteristics of major compilers are compared while alternate runtime implementations are reviewed. Modifications and extensions to the Ada Language Reference Manual to address some of these runtime issues are proposed. Three classes of projects focusing on the most critical runtime features of Ada are recommended, including a range of immediately feasible full scale Ada development projects. Also, a list of runtime features and procurement issues is proposed for consideration by the vendors, contractors and the government

    Machine characterization and benchmark performance prediction

    From runs of standard benchmarks or benchmark suites, it is not possible to characterize the machine nor to predict the run time of other benchmarks which have not been run. A new approach to benchmarking and machine characterization is reported. The creation and use of a machine analyzer is described, which measures the performance of a given machine on FORTRAN source language constructs. The machine analyzer yields a set of parameters which characterize the machine and spotlight its strong and weak points. Also described is a program analyzer, which analyzes FORTRAN programs and determines the frequency of execution of each of the same set of source language operations. It is then shown that by combining a machine characterization and a program characterization, we are able to predict with good accuracy the run time of a given benchmark on a given machine. Characterizations are provided for the Cray-X-MP/48, Cyber 205, IBM 3090/200, Amdahl 5840, Convex C-1, VAX 8600, VAX 11/785, VAX 11/780, SUN 3/50, and IBM RT-PC/125, and for the following benchmark programs or suites: Los Alamos (BMK8A1), Baskett, Linpack, Livermore Loops, Madelbrot Set, NAS Kernels, Shell Sort, Smith, Whetstone and Sieve of Erathostenes

    The dynamic response of the MK-2 version of the Langmuir probe amplifier was studied. The settling time of the step response is increased by: (1) stray node-to-ground capacitance at series connections between high value feedback resistors; and (2) input capacitance due to the input cable, FET switches, and input source follower. The stray node-to-ground capacitances can be reduced to tolerable levels by elevating the string of feedback resistors above the printing board. A new feedback network was considered, with promising results. The design uses resistances having much lower nominal values, thereby minimizing the effect of stray capacitances. Faster settling times can be achieved by using an operational amplifier having a higher gain-bandwidth product

The Ada Software Repository is one of several repositories located on the SIMTEL20 Defense Data Network host computer at White Sands Missile Range, and available to any host computer on the network since 26 November 1984. This repository provides a free source for Ada programs and information. The Ada Software Repository is divided into several subdirectories. These directories are organized by topic, and their names and a brief overview of their topics are contained. The Ada Software Repository on SIMTEL20 serves two basic roles: to promote the exchange and use (reusability) of Ada programs and tools (including components) and to promote Ada education

    Techniques for power system simulation using multiple processors

    The thesis describes development work which was undertaken to improve the speed of a real-time power system simulator used for the development and testing of control schemes. The solution of large, highly sparse matrices was targeted because this is the most time-consuming part of the current simulator. Major improvements in the speed of the matrix ordering phase of the solution were achieved through the development of a new ordering strategy. This was thoroughly investigated, and is shown to provide important additional improvements compared to standard ordering methods, in reducing path length and minimising potential pipeline stalls. Alterations were made to the remainder of the solution process which provided more flexibility in scheduling calculations. This was used to dramatically ease the run-time generation of efficient code, dedicated to the solution of one matrix structure, and also to reduce memory requirements. A survey of the available microprocessors was performed, which concluded that a special-purpose design could best implement the code generated at run-time, and a design was produced using a microprogrammable floating-point processor, which matched the code produced by the earlier work. A method of splitting the matrix solution onto parallel processors was investigated, and two methods of producing network splits were developed and their results compared. The best results from each method were found to agree well, with a predicted three-fold speed-up for the matrix solution of the C.E.G.B. transmission system from the use of six processors. This gain will increase for the whole simulator. A parallel processing topology of the partitioned network and produce the necessary structures for the remainder of the solution process

    Compiler-assisted multiple instruction rollback recovery using a read buffer

    Multiple instruction rollback (MIR) is a technique that has been implemented in mainframe computers to provide rapid recovery from transient processor failures. Hardware-based MIR designs eliminate rollback data hazards by providing data redundancy implemented in hardware. Compiler-based MIR designs have also been developed which remove rollback data hazards directly with data-flow transformations. This paper describes compiler-assisted techniques to achieve multiple instruction rollback recovery. We observe that some data hazards resulting from instruction rollback can be resolved efficiently by providing an operand read buffer while others are resolved more efficiently with compiler transformations. The compiler-assisted scheme presented consists of hardware that is less complex than shadow files, history files, history buffers, or delayed write buffers, while experimental evaluation indicates performance improvement over compiler-based schemes

    Journal ArticleThe consistent labeling problem arises in high level computer vision when assigning semantic meaning to the regions of a n image. One of the drawbacks of this method is that it is rather slow. By using the consistency tests, node, arc and path consistency [9], the search space is drastically reduced. However, for large problems it takes a fair amount of time. To use these algorithms more efficiently, one can take two approaches. First, is to design special purpose hardware to specifically run these algorithms. Second is t o use faster computers. Here again, one can either take advantage of the multiprocessors, which are becoming very widely available, or use supercomputers like the CRAY, CDC, etc. Here, we present results of the performance of these algorithms in the CRAY supercomputer

    A full field, 3-D velocimeter for microgravity crystallization experiments

    The programming and algorithms needed for implementing a full-field, 3-D velocimeter for laminar flow systems and the appropriate hardware to fully implement this ultimate system are discussed. It appears that imaging using a synched pair of video cameras and digitizer boards with synched rails for camera motion will provide a viable solution to the laminar tracking problem. The algorithms given here are simple, which should speed processing. On a heavily loaded VAXstation 3100 the particle identification can take 15 to 30 seconds, with the tracking taking less than one second. It seeems reasonable to assume that four image pairs can thus be acquired and analyzed in under one minute
