Charged Higgs phenomenology in the flipped two Higgs doublet model
We study the phenomenology of the charged Higgs boson in the "flipped" two
Higgs doublet model, in which one doublet gives mass to up-type quarks and
charged leptons and the other gives mass to down-type quarks. We present the
charged Higgs branching ratios and summarize the indirect constraints. We
extrapolate existing LEP searches for H+H- and Tevatron searches for t tbar
with t --> H+ b into the flipped model and extract constraints on MH+ and the
parameter tan(beta). We finish by reviewing existing LHC charged Higgs searches
and suggest that the LHC reach in this model could be extended for charged
Higgs masses below the tb threshold by considering t tbar with t --> H+ b and

Precision Electroweak Tests of the Minimal and Flipped SU(5) Supergravity Models
We explore the one-loop electroweak radiative corrections in the minimal
and the no-scale flipped supergravity models via explicit
calculation of vacuum polarization contributions to the
parameters. Experimentally, are obtained from a global fit
to the LEP observables, and measurements. We include -dependent
effects which have been neglected in most previous ``model-independent"
analyses of this type. These effects induce a large systematic negative shift
on for light chargino masses (m_{\chi^\pm_1}\lsim70\GeV).
In agreement with previous general arguments, we find that for increasingly
large sparticle masses, the heavy sector of both models rapidly decouples, \ie,
the values for quickly asymptote to the Standard Model
values with a {\it light} Higgs (m_{H_{SM}}\sim100\GeV). Specifically, at
present the CL upper limit on the top-quark mass is m_t\lsim175\GeV in
the no-scale flipped supergravity model. These bounds can be
strengthened for increasing chargino masses in the 50-100\GeV interval. In
particular, for m_t\gsim160\GeV, the Tevatron may be able to probe through
gluino() and squark() production up to m_{\tilde g}\approx
m_{\tilde q}\approx250\GeV, exploring at least half of the parameter space in

Quantitative Decoding of Interactions in Tunable Nanomagnet Arrays Using First Order Reversal Curves
To develop a full understanding of interactions in nanomagnet arrays is a
persistent challenge, critically impacting their technological acceptance. This
paper reports the experimental, numerical and analytical investigation of
interactions in arrays of Co nanoellipses using the first-order reversal curve
(FORC) technique. A mean-field analysis has revealed the physical mechanisms
giving rise to all of the observed features: a shift of the non-interacting
FORC-ridge at the low-H end off the local coercivity H axis; a stretch
of the FORC-ridge at the high-H end without shifting it off the H axis;
and a formation of a tilted edge connected to the ridge at the low-H end.
Changing from flat to Gaussian coercivity distribution produces a negative
feature, bends the ridge, and broadens the edge. Finally, nearest neighbor
interactions segment the FORC-ridge. These results demonstrate that the FORC
approach provides a comprehensive framework to qualitatively and quantitatively

SU(5) D-brane realizations, Yukawa couplings and proton stability
We discuss SU(5) Grand Unified Theories in the context of orientifold
compactifications. Specifically, we investigate two and three D-brane stack
realizations of the Georgi-Glashow and the flipped SU(5) model and analyze them
with respect to their Yukawa couplings. As pointed out in arXiv:0909.0271 the
most economical Georgi-Glashow realization based on two stacks generically
suffers from a disastrous large proton decay rate. We show that allowing for an
additional U(1) D-brane stack this as well as other phenomenological problems
can be resolved. We exemplify with globally consistent Georgi-Glashow models
based on RCFT that these D-brane quivers can be indeed embedded in a global
setting. These globally consistent realizations admit rigid O(1) instantons
inducing the perturbatively missing coupling 10105^H. Finally we show that
flipped SU(5) D-brane realizations even with multiple U(1) D-brane stacks are
plagued by severe phenomenological drawbacks which generically cannot be

Neutrinos in cosmology, with some significant digressions
Neutrinos play prominent roles in both particle physics and cosmology. In
this talk, I will cover two broad topics. The first will be possible origins
for neutrino masses and mixings and the implications of this physics for
cosmology. Some non-cosmological digressions on the flavour problem in general
will be made. The second topic will be Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) and

Solving satisfiability problems by fluctuations: The dynamics of stochastic local search algorithms
Stochastic local search algorithms are frequently used to numerically solve
hard combinatorial optimization or decision problems. We give numerical and
approximate analytical descriptions of the dynamics of such algorithms applied
to random satisfiability problems. We find two different dynamical regimes,
depending on the number of constraints per variable: For low constraintness,
the problems are solved efficiently, i.e. in linear time. For higher
constraintness, the solution times become exponential. We observe that the
dynamical behavior is characterized by a fast equilibration and fluctuations
around this equilibrium. If the algorithm runs long enough, an exponentially
