    Projecting the voice : audience responses to ICT-mediated contemporary opera

    This paper examines how audiences experience live opera performance and the behaviours they exhibit during live-streaming of the performance. It aims to contribute to our understanding of how audiences, who increasingly inhabit an environment saturated with digital media, respond to contemporary opera performance. Based on a comparative study of audience experiences and behaviours during a live opera performance and the streamed opera screening, we investigate whether digital mediation affects audience appreciation, and whether streaming live opera means the same thing to an audience as the unmediated performance. We firstly outline the conception, design and performance of a contemporary opera and its simultaneous streaming to nearby digital screens. Then, we report the evaluation of the project as measured by a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods during the rehearsals, the live performance and the screening. As one of the few social studies of contemporary classical music in Britain, our study of opera audience behaviours sheds light on the challenges and opportunities afforded by digital technologies for opera companies. Understanding how audiences appreciate digital operas offers practical advice on how theatres and opera companies could respond to new forms of digital activities

    On Metrics for Location-Aware Games

    Metrics are important and well-known tools to measure users’ behavior in games, and gameplay in general. Particularities of location-aware games—a class of games where the player’s location plays a central role-demand specific support in metrics to adequately address the spatio-temporal features such games exhibit. In this article, we analyse and discuss how existing game analytics platforms address the spatio-temporal features of location-aware games. Our analysis reveals that little support is available. Next, based on the analysis, we propose a classification of spatial metrics, embedded in existing literature, and discuss three types of spatial metrics-point-, trajectory- and area-based metrics-, and elaborate examples and difficulties. Finally, we discuss how spatial metrics may be deployed to improve gameplay in location-aware games

    Towards the Temporal Streaming of Graph Data on Distributed Ledgers

    We present our work-in-progress on handling temporal RDF graph data using the Ethereum distributed ledger. The motivation for this work are scenarios where multiple distributed consumers of streamed data may need or wish to verify that data has not been tampered with since it was generated – for example, if the data describes something which can be or has been sold, such as domestically-generated electricity. We describe a system in which temporal annotations, and information suitable to validate a given dataset, are stored on a distributed ledger, alongside the results of fixed SPARQL queries executed at the time of data storage. The model adopted implements a graph-based form of temporal RDF, in which time intervals are represented by named graphs corresponding to ledger entries. We conclude by discussing evaluation, what remains to be implemented, and future directions

    Design of a tourist driven bandwidth determined MultiModal mobile presentation system

    In this paper we report on first experiences with a new software architecture for agent toolkits. Agent toolkits mainly consist of a software system that defines an agency, which is responsible to host software agents. Most architectures developed so far already define a large set of services, for example for agent migration, communication, and tracking. We propose to employ a kernel-based approach, where the kernel only provides fundamental concepts and functions common in all toolkits and abstracts from any of these services. We were able to show that in particular agent migration can be implemented as an optional service. We believe that this architecture is a useful foundation for research on agent-related topics as it allows research groups to implement their own results as a service which can be used by other groups running an agent system based on the same architecture
