MonALISA : A Distributed Monitoring Service Architecture
The MonALISA (Monitoring Agents in A Large Integrated Services Architecture)
system provides a distributed monitoring service. MonALISA is based on a
scalable Dynamic Distributed Services Architecture which is designed to meet
the needs of physics collaborations for monitoring global Grid systems, and is
implemented using JINI/JAVA and WSDL/SOAP technologies. The scalability of the
system derives from the use of multithreaded Station Servers to host a variety
of loosely coupled self-describing dynamic services, the ability of each
service to register itself and then to be discovered and used by any other
services, or clients that require such information, and the ability of all
services and clients subscribing to a set of events (state changes) in the
system to be notified automatically. The framework integrates several existing
monitoring tools and procedures to collect parameters describing computational
nodes, applications and network performance. It has built-in SNMP support and
network-performance monitoring algorithms that enable it to monitor end-to-end
network performance as well as the performance and state of site facilities in
a Grid. MonALISA is currently running around the clock on the US CMS test Grid
as well as an increasing number of other sites. It is also being used to
monitor the performance and optimize the interconnections among the reflectors

Distributed service orchestration : eventually consistent cloud operation and integration
Both researchers and industry players are facing the same obstacles when entering the big data field. Deploying and testing distributed data technologies requires a big up-front investment of both time and knowledge. Existing cloud automation solutions are not well suited for managing complex distributed data solutions. This paper proposes a distributed service orchestration architecture to better handle the complex orchestration logic needed in these cases. A novel service-engine based approach is proposed to cope with the versatility of the individual components. A hybrid integration approach bridges the gap between cloud modeling languages, automation artifacts, image-based schedulers and PaaS solutions. This approach is integrated in the distributed data experimentation platform Tengu, making it more flexible and robust
A Software Suite for the Control and the Monitoring of Adaptive Robotic Ecologies
Adaptive robotic ecologies are networks of heterogeneous robotic devices (sensors, actuators, automated appliances) pervasively embedded in everyday environments, where they learn to cooperate towards the achievement of complex tasks. While their flexibility makes them an increasingly popular way to improve a system’s reliability, scalability, robustness and autonomy, their effective realisation demands integrated control and software solutions for the specification, integration and management of their highly heterogeneous and computational constrained components. In this extended abstract we briefly illustrate the characteristic requirements dictated by robotic ecologies, discuss our experience in developing adaptive robotic ecologies, and provide an overview of the specific solutions developed as part of the EU FP7 RUBICON Project
Incorporating prediction models in the SelfLet framework: a plugin approach
A complex pervasive system is typically composed of many cooperating
\emph{nodes}, running on machines with different capabilities, and pervasively
distributed across the environment. These systems pose several new challenges
such as the need for the nodes to manage autonomously and dynamically in order
to adapt to changes detected in the environment. To address the above issue, a
number of autonomic frameworks has been proposed. These usually offer either
predefined self-management policies or programmatic mechanisms for creating new
policies at design time. From a more theoretical perspective, some works
propose the adoption of prediction models as a way to anticipate the evolution
of the system and to make timely decisions. In this context, our aim is to
experiment with the integration of prediction models within a specific
autonomic framework in order to assess the feasibility of such integration in a
setting where the characteristics of dynamicity, decentralization, and
cooperation among nodes are important. We extend an existing infrastructure
called \emph{SelfLets} in order to make it ready to host various prediction
models that can be dynamically plugged and unplugged in the various component
nodes, thus enabling a wide range of predictions to be performed. Also, we show
in a simple example how the system works when adopting a specific prediction
model from the literature

Self-tuning run-time reconfigurable PID controller
Digital PID control algorithm is one of the most commonly used algorithms in the control systems area. This algorithm is very well known, it is simple, easily implementable in the computer control systems and most of all its operation is very predictable. Thus PID control has got well known impact on the control system behavior. However, in its simple form the controller have no reconfiguration support. In a case of the controlled system substantial changes (or the whole control environment, in the wider aspect, for example if the disturbances characteristics would change) it is not possible to make the PID controller robust enough. In this paper a new structure of digital PID controller is proposed, where the policy-based computing is used to equip the controller with the ability to adjust it's behavior according to the environmental changes. Application to the electro-oil evaporator which is a part of distillation installation is used to show the new controller structure in operation

Secure communication using dynamic VPN provisioning in an Inter-Cloud environment
Most of the current cloud computing platforms offer Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) model, which aims to provision basic virtualised computing resources as on-demand and dynamic services. Nevertheless, a single cloud does not have limitless resources to offer to its users, hence the notion of an Inter-Cloud enviroment where a cloud can use the infrastructure resources of other clouds. However, there is no common framework in existence that allows the srevice owners to seamlessly provision even some basic services across multiple cloud service providers, albeit not due to any inherent incompatibility or proprietary nature of the foundation technologies on which these cloud platforms are built. In this paper we present a novel solution which aims to cover a gap in a subsection of this problem domain. Our solution offer a security architecture that enables service owners to provision a dynamic and service-oriented secure virtual private network on top of multiple cloud IaaS providers. It does this by leveraging the scalability, robustness and flexibility of peer- to-peer overlay techniques to eliminate the manual configuration, key management and peer churn problems encountered in setting up the secure communication channels dynamically, between different components of a typical service that is deployed on multiple clouds.
