Ubiquitous Knowledge-based Framework for Personalized Home Healthcare Systems
[[abstract]]In this paper, a personalized home healthcare system with the ubiquitous knowledge-based framework is presented. This system aims to facilitate the in-person service of healthcare and mobility support. To this end, an efficient rule-based reasoning model and flexible knowledge rules are constructed for providing the necessary physiological support and medication treatment procedures. Among the utilized sensing and control technology, software modules, video camera sensors, communication devices, physiological sensors, and a robotic walking support platform are integrated in our system. The proposed system can offer high flexibility and further meet the demands in the practical healthcare support for different patients and caregivers by updating the knowledge rules in the inference mechanism. The various experimentations can demonstrate the system feasibility and interaction with users under numerous healthcare tasks, intelligent personalized services, remote healthcare and walking support and monitoring.[[conferencetype]]ćé[[conferencedate]]20140407~20140411[[booktype]]é»ćç[[iscallforpapers]]Y[[conferencelocation]]Miami, US
SDN - Architectural Enabler for Reliable Communication over Millimeter-Wave 5G Networks
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequency bands offer a new frontier for
next-generation wireless networks, popularly known as 5G, to enable
multi-gigabit communication; however, the availability and reliability of
mmWave signals are significantly limited due to its unfavorable propagation
characteristics. Thus, mmWave networks rely on directional narrow-beam
transmissions to overcome severe path-loss. To mitigate the impact of
transmission-reception directionality and provide uninterrupted network
services, ensuring the availability of mmWave transmission links is important.
In this paper, we proposed a new flexible network architecture to provide
efficient resource coordination among serving basestations during user
mobility. The key idea of this holistic architecture is to exploit the
software-defined networking (SDN) technology with mmWave communication to
provide a flexible and resilient network architecture. Besides, this paper
presents an efficient and seamless uncoordinated network operation to support
reliable communication in highly-dynamic environments characterized by high
density and mobility of wireless devices. To warrant high-reliability and guard
against the potential radio link failure, we introduce a new transmission
framework to ensure that there is at least one basestation is connected to the
UE at all times. We validate the proposed transmission scheme through
simulations.Comment: This article has been accepted for publication at the IEEE GLOBECOM

The SATIN component system - a metamodel for engineering adaptable mobile systems
Mobile computing devices, such as personal digital assistants and mobile phones, are becoming increasingly popular, smaller, and more capable. We argue that mobile systems should be able to adapt to changing requirements and execution environments. Adaptation requires the ability-to reconfigure the deployed code base on a mobile device. Such reconfiguration is considerably simplified if mobile applications are component-oriented rather than monolithic blocks of code. We present the SATIN (system adaptation targeting integrated networks) component metamodel, a lightweight local component metamodel that offers the flexible use of logical mobility primitives to reconfigure the software system by dynamically transferring code. The metamodel is implemented in the SATIN middleware system, a component-based mobile computing middleware that uses the mobility primitives defined in the metamodel to reconfigure both itself and applications that it hosts. We demonstrate the suitability of SATIN in terms of lightweightedness, flexibility, and reusability for the creation of adaptable mobile systems by using it to implement, port, and evaluate a number of existing and new applications, including an active network platform developed for satellite communication at the European space agency. These applications exhibit different aspects of adaptation and demonstrate the flexibility of the approach and the advantages gaine
Context-Awareness Enhances 5G Multi-Access Edge Computing Reliability
The fifth generation (5G) mobile telecommunication network is expected to
support Multi- Access Edge Computing (MEC), which intends to distribute
computation tasks and services from the central cloud to the edge clouds.
Towards ultra-responsive, ultra-reliable and ultra-low-latency MEC services,
the current mobile network security architecture should enable a more
decentralized approach for authentication and authorization processes. This
paper proposes a novel decentralized authentication architecture that supports
flexible and low-cost local authentication with the awareness of context
information of network elements such as user equipment and virtual network
functions. Based on a Markov model for backhaul link quality, as well as a
random walk mobility model with mixed mobility classes and traffic scenarios,
numerical simulations have demonstrated that the proposed approach is able to
achieve a flexible balance between the network operating cost and the MEC
reliability.Comment: Accepted by IEEE Access on Feb. 02, 201
Enabling Disaster Resilient 4G Mobile Communication Networks
The 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) is the cellular technology expected to
outperform the previous generations and to some extent revolutionize the
experience of the users by taking advantage of the most advanced radio access
techniques (i.e. OFDMA, SC-FDMA, MIMO). However, the strong dependencies
between user equipments (UEs), base stations (eNBs) and the Evolved Packet Core
(EPC) limit the flexibility, manageability and resiliency in such networks. In
case the communication links between UEs-eNB or eNB-EPC are disrupted, UEs are
in fact unable to communicate. In this article, we reshape the 4G mobile
network to move towards more virtual and distributed architectures for
improving disaster resilience, drastically reducing the dependency between UEs,
eNBs and EPC. The contribution of this work is twofold. We firstly present the
Flexible Management Entity (FME), a distributed entity which leverages on
virtualized EPC functionalities in 4G cellular systems. Second, we introduce a
simple and novel device-todevice (D2D) communication scheme allowing the UEs in
physical proximity to communicate directly without resorting to the
coordination with an eNB.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Communications Magazin
The simplicity project: easing the burden of using complex and heterogeneous ICT devices and services
As of today, to exploit the variety of different "services", users need to configure each of their devices by using different procedures and need to explicitly select among heterogeneous access technologies and protocols. In addition to that, users are authenticated and charged by different means. The lack of implicit human computer interaction, context-awareness and standardisation places an enormous burden of complexity on the shoulders of the final users. The IST-Simplicity project aims at leveraging such problems by: i) automatically creating and customizing a user communication space; ii) adapting services to user terminal characteristics and to users preferences; iii) orchestrating network capabilities. The aim of this paper is to present the technical framework of the IST-Simplicity project. This paper is a thorough analysis and qualitative evaluation of the different technologies, standards and works presented in the literature related to the Simplicity system to be developed
Will SDN be part of 5G?
For many, this is no longer a valid question and the case is considered
settled with SDN/NFV (Software Defined Networking/Network Function
Virtualization) providing the inevitable innovation enablers solving many
outstanding management issues regarding 5G. However, given the monumental task
of softwarization of radio access network (RAN) while 5G is just around the
corner and some companies have started unveiling their 5G equipment already,
the concern is very realistic that we may only see some point solutions
involving SDN technology instead of a fully SDN-enabled RAN. This survey paper
identifies all important obstacles in the way and looks at the state of the art
of the relevant solutions. This survey is different from the previous surveys
on SDN-based RAN as it focuses on the salient problems and discusses solutions
proposed within and outside SDN literature. Our main focus is on fronthaul,
backward compatibility, supposedly disruptive nature of SDN deployment,
business cases and monetization of SDN related upgrades, latency of general
purpose processors (GPP), and additional security vulnerabilities,
softwarization brings along to the RAN. We have also provided a summary of the
architectural developments in SDN-based RAN landscape as not all work can be
covered under the focused issues. This paper provides a comprehensive survey on
the state of the art of SDN-based RAN and clearly points out the gaps in the
technology.Comment: 33 pages, 10 figure
