    The NASA SBIR product catalog

    The purpose of this catalog is to assist small business firms in making the community aware of products emerging from their efforts in the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. It contains descriptions of some products that have advanced into Phase 3 and others that are identified as prospective products. Both lists of products in this catalog are based on information supplied by NASA SBIR contractors in responding to an invitation to be represented in this document. Generally, all products suggested by the small firms were included in order to meet the goals of information exchange for SBIR results. Of the 444 SBIR contractors NASA queried, 137 provided information on 219 products. The catalog presents the product information in the technology areas listed in the table of contents. Within each area, the products are listed in alphabetical order by product name and are given identifying numbers. Also included is an alphabetical listing of the companies that have products described. This listing cross-references the product list and provides information on the business activity of each firm. In addition, there are three indexes: one a list of firms by states, one that lists the products according to NASA Centers that managed the SBIR projects, and one that lists the products by the relevant Technical Topics utilized in NASA's annual program solicitation under which each SBIR project was selected

    ENTREPRENEURIAL PLANNING AND URBAN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: THE CASE OF ESTABLISHING COMMUTER RAIL IN ORLANDO, FLORIDA

    Rooted in the theories of urban entrepreneurialism, this dissertation employs a political economy framework as a means of analyzing urban governance and economic development in the contemporary US city. This case study of Orlando adds to our understanding of how entrepreneurial narratives are being applied to transportation infrastructure projects in pursuit of local economic development. The empirical case study explores the relationship between planning narratives, urban governance and economic development in the establishment of the SunRail commuter rail system in central Florida. I present the political history of economic development and the role of local boosters in shaping the sociospatial distribution of urban infrastructure and public investment in Central Florida. Utilizing a qualitative research methodology, the case study is based on a series of extended interviews with transportation planners, urban policymakers and community leaders in the Orlando area. The empirical data was complemented with official documents and archival records concerning the planning of transit-oriented developments along the SunRail system. This research presents the current efforts of Central Florida boosters to apply governance approaches to reshape the urban form and to direct the ensuing flows of capital investment through the restructuring of the region’s transportation infrastructure and employing planning narratives that draw heavily on creating amenity growth strategies. Local boosters expect that by providing dense development corridors through the region, including transit-oriented development centers, the city will have met the pre-conditions for attracting private capital investment. Specifically, local leaders are seeking to attract investment by the type of firms that will provide high-wage jobs to the region to balance the glut of low-wage service sectors jobs found in the region’s theme park industry. In the case of Central Florida, early private investment in SunRail adjacent property has come from local firms that tend to have a high level of local fixity and existing investments in the Orlando market

    Active database behaviour: the REFLEX approach

    Modern day and new generation applications have more demanding requirements than traditional database management systems (DBMS) are able to support. Two of these requirements, timely responses to the change of database state and application domain knowledge stored within the database, are embodied within active database technology. Currently, there are a number of research prototype active database systems throughout the world. In order for an organisation to use any such prototype system, it may have to forsake existing products and resources and embark on substantial reinvestment in the new database products and associated resources and retraining costs. This approach would clearly be unfavourable as it is expensive both in terms of time and money. A more suitable approach would be to allow active behaviour to be added onto their existing systems. This scenario is addressed within this research. It investigates how best active behaviour can be augmented to existing DBMSs, so as to preserve the investments in an organisation's resources, by examining the following issues, (i.) what form the knowledge model should take, (ii.) should rules and events be modelled as first class objects, (iii.) how will the triggering events be specified, (iv.) how the user will interact with the system. Various design decisions were taken, which were investigated by implementation of a series of working prototypes, on the ONTOS DBMS platform. The resultant REFLEX model was successfully ported and adapted onto a second POET platform. The porting process uncovered some interesting issues regarding preconceived ideas about the portability of open systems

    Estimating Solar Energy Production in Urban Areas for Electric Vehicles

    Cities have a high potential for solar energy from PVs installed on buildings\u27 rooftops. There is an increased demand for solar energy in cities to reduce the negative effect of climate change. The thesis investigates solar energy potential in urban areas. It tries to determine how to detect and identify available rooftop areas, how to calculate suitable ones after excluding the effects of the shade, and the estimated energy generated from PVs. Geographic Information Sciences (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) are used in solar city planning. The goal of this research is to assess available and suitable rooftops areas using different GIS and RS techniques for installing PVs and estimating solar energy production for a sample of six compounds in New Cairo, and explore how to map urban areas on the city scale. In this research, the study area is the new Cairo city which has a high potential for harvesting solar energy, buildings in each compound have the same height, which does not cast shade on other buildings affecting PV efficiency. When applying GIS and RS techniques in New Cairo city, it is found that environmental factors - such as bare soil - affect the accuracy of the result, which reached 67% on the city scale. Researching more minor scales, such as compounds, required Very High Resolution (VHR) satellite images with a spatial resolution of up to 0.5 meter. The RS techniques applied in this research included supervised classification, and feature extraction, on Pleiades-1b VHR. On the compound scale, the accuracy assessment for the samples ranged between 74.6% and 96.875%. Estimating the PV energy production requires solar data; which was collected using a weather station and a pyrometer at the American University in Cairo, which is typical of the neighboring compounds in the new Cairo region. It took three years to collect the solar incidence data. The Hay- Devis, Klucher, and Reindl (HDKR) model is then employed to extrapolate the solar radiation measured on horizontal surfaces β =0°, to that on tilted surfaces with inclination angles β =10°, 20°, 30° and 45°. The calculated (with help of GIS and Solar radiation models) net rooftop area available for capturing solar radiation was determined for sample New Cairo compounds . The available rooftop areas were subject to the restriction that all the PVs would be coplanar, none of the PVs would protrude outside the rooftop boundaries, and no shading of PVs would occur at any time of the year; moreover typical other rooftop occupied areas, and actual dimensions of typical roof top PVs were taken into consideration. From those calculations, both the realistic total annual Electrical energy produced by the PVs and their daily monthly energy produced are deduced. The former is relevant if the PVs are tied to a grid, whereas the other is more relevant if it is not; optimization is different for both. Results were extended to estimate the total number of cars that may be driven off PV converted solar radiation per home, for different scenarios

    Digital Twins have been around for decades, especially in industrial processes. However, with the recent advent of transformative digital technologies (i.e. IoT, AI, ML, Big Data analytics, and ubiquitous connectivity) Digital Twins are changing most of the society sectors, providing the most advance pattern to make the physical and the digital worlds interact. Naturally, this is also true for the scientific sector, and in particular those disciplines that are engaged in understanding and addressing the Global Change effects. Thanks to the Digital Twins growing development, for the first time, it is possible to envision a digital replica of important natural and social phenomena and processes, trying to anticipate their behaviour. There exist diverse definitions of Digital Twins, reflecting the diverse concerns of the industrial, scientific, and standardization sectors (in particular IEEE and ISO/IEC), which have been working on their description and realization. The main interaction features characterizing a Digital Twin are: - Interoperability; - Information Model; - Data Exchange; - Administration; - Synchronization; - Push mode (Publish Subscribe). According the scientific research, there is still the need to address the following challenges to push Digital Twins implementation and effective use: - Unify data and model standards; - Share data and models; - Innovate on services; - Establish forums. In industry, Digital Twins are well used in “vertical” sectors/application areas, including: manufacturing, energy, smart cities, farming, building, healthcare.     ACHIEVING AUTONOMIC SERVICE ORIENTED ARCHITECTURE USING CASE BASED REASONING

    Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) enables composition of large and complex computational units out of the available atomic services. However, implementation of SOA, for its dynamic nature, could bring about challenges in terms of service discovery, service interaction, service composition, robustness, etc. In the near future, SOA will often need to dynamically re-configuring and re-organizing its topologies of interactions between the web services because of some unpredictable events, such as crashes or network problems, which will cause service unavailability. Complexity and dynamism of the current and future global network system require service architecture that is capable of autonomously changing its structure and functionality to meet dynamic changes in the requirements and environment with little human intervention. This then needs to motivate the research described throughout this thesis. In this thesis, the idea of introducing autonomy and adapting case-based reasoning into SOA in order to extend the intelligence and capability of SOA is contributed and elaborated. It is conducted by proposing architecture of an autonomic SOA framework based on case-based reasoning and the architectural considerations of autonomic computing paradigm. It is then followed by developing and analyzing formal models of the proposed architecture using Petri Net. The framework is also tested and analyzed through case studies, simulation, and prototype development. The case studies show feasibility to employing case-based reasoning and autonomic computing into SOA domain and the simulation results show believability that it would increase the intelligence, capability, usability and robustness of SOA. It was shown that SOA can be improved to cope with dynamic environment and services unavailability by incorporating case-based reasoning and autonomic computing paradigm to monitor and analyze events and service requests, then to plan and execute the appropriate actions using the knowledge stored in knowledge database
