    Computational Modeling and Experimental Characterization of Pneumatically Driven Actuators for the Development of a Soft Robotic Arm

    abstract: Soft Poly-Limb (SPL) is a pneumatically driven, wearable, soft continuum robotic arm designed to aid humans with medical conditions, such as cerebral palsy, paraplegia, cervical spondylotic myelopathy, perform activities of daily living. To support user's tasks, the SPL acts as an additional limb extending from the human body which can be controlled to perform safe and compliant mobile manipulation in three-dimensional space. The SPL is inspired by invertebrate limbs, such as the elephant trunk and the arms of the octopus. In this work, various geometrical and physical parameters of the SPL are identified, and behavior of the actuators that comprise it are studied by varying their parameters through novel quasi-static computational models. As a result, this study provides a set of engineering design rules to create soft actuators for continuum soft robotic arms by understanding how varying parameters affect the actuator's motion as a function of the input pressure. A prototype of the SPL is fabricated to analyze the accuracy of these computational models by performing linear expansion, bending and arbitrary pose tests. Furthermore, combinations of the parameters based on the application of the SPL are determined to affect the weight, payload capacity, and stiffness of the arm. Experimental results demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed computational models and help in understanding the behavior of soft compliant actuators. Finally, based on the set functional requirements for the assistance of impaired users, results show the effectiveness of the SPL in performing tasks for activities of daily living.Dissertation/ThesisMasters Thesis Mechanical Engineering 201

    Continuum Mechanical Models for Design and Characterization of Soft Robots

    The emergence of ``soft'' robots, whose bodies are made from stretchable materials, has fundamentally changed the way we design and construct robotic systems. Demonstrations and research show that soft robotic systems can be useful in rehabilitation, medical devices, agriculture, manufacturing and home assistance. Increasing need for collaborative, safe robotic devices have combined with technological advances to create a compelling development landscape for soft robots. However, soft robots are not yet present in medical and rehabilitative devices, agriculture, our homes, and many other human-collaborative and human-interactive applications. This gap between promise and practical implementation exists because foundational theories and techniques that exist in rigid robotics have not yet been developed for soft robots. Theories in traditional robotics rely on rigid body displacements via discrete joints and discrete actuators, while in soft robots, kinematic and actuation functions are blended, leading to nonlinear, continuous deformations rather than rigid body motion. This dissertation addresses the need for foundational techniques using continuum mechanics. Three core questions regarding the use of continuum mechanical models in soft robotics are explored: (1) whether or not continuum mechanical models can describe existing soft actuators, (2) which physical phenomena need to be incorporated into continuum mechanical models for their use in a soft robotics context, and (3) how understanding on continuum mechanical phenomena may form bases for novel soft robot architectures. Theoretical modeling, experimentation, and design prototyping tools are used to explore Fiber-Reinforced Elastomeric Enclosures (FREEs), an often-used soft actuator, and to develop novel soft robot architectures based on auxetic behavior. This dissertation develops a continuum mechanical model for end loading on FREEs. This model connects a FREE’s actuation pressure and kinematic configuration to its end loads by considering stiffness of its elastomer and fiber reinforcement. The model is validated against a large experimental data set and compared to other FREE models used by roboticists. It is shown that the model can describe the FREE’s loading in a generalizable manner, but that it is bounded in its peak performance. Such a model can provide the novel function of evaluating the performance of FREE designs under high loading without the costs of building and testing prototypes. This dissertation further explores the influence viscoelasticity, an inherent property of soft polymers, on end loading of FREEs. The viscoelastic model developed can inform soft roboticists wishing to exploit or avoid hysteresis and force reversal. The final section of the dissertations explores two contrasting styles of auxetic metamaterials for their uses in soft robotic actuation. The first metamaterial architecture is composed of beams with distributed compliance, which are placed antagonistic configurations on a variety of surfaces, giving ride to shape morphing behavior. The second metamaterial architecture studied is a ``kirigami’’ sheet with an orthogonal cut pattern, utilizing lumped compliance and strain hardening to permanently deploy from a compact shape to a functional one. This dissertation lays the foundation for design of soft robots by robust physical models, reducing the need for physical prototypes and trial-and-error approaches. The work presented provides tools for systematic exploration of FREEs under loading in a wide range of configurations. The work further develops new concepts for soft actuators based on continuum mechanical modeling of auxetic metamaterials.     Embeddable micro pinch valve for localized pressure control on modular pneumatic soft robotic arm

    The advantages of soft robots include being able to manipulate delicate objects, adaptive to uncertain and dynamic task-environments and interacting with human in an intrinsically friendly manner. These merits make them potentially useful in the nuclear industry, where robots have to handle different situations involving radiation. Despite numerous designs for actuators, most soft robots nowadays are still driven by external valves and energy supplies. This gives rise to the problem that every actuator on the robot has to be connected by a tube to the outside, which hinders the agility and limits the scalability of the robot. Localizing the fluid control can reduce the number of tubes connecting to soft robots, especially for those with many degrees of freedom (DoFs). It also enables modular design, which allows the robots to be reconfigured for different tasks. To achieve localized control with minimal additional weight and size, we designed the embeddable micro pinch valve (EMPV) that is light (< 2.5 g) and small (< 2 cm3) enough to be built into a typical soft pneumatic actuator. An EMPV manipulates the flow going into (or out from) the actuator by externally squeezing the channel that connects the actuator to the pressure source. This reduces the need of sealing components because the integrity of the flow channels is preserved. Combining two EMPVs and a soft pneumatic actuator, we designed a hybrid actuator that is controlled by electric signals while powered by pneumatic force. Then, a prototype wrist module with three degrees of freedom is made using three hybrid actuators. A circuit locally controls the EMPVs on the wrist and communicates with the central controller via Isomorphic Synchronous Transmit-Receive (ISTR) protocol which is specially designed for modular robots. Connecting several identical copies of the wrist in series, we built up a modular soft robotic arm. These prototypes aim to demonstrate that, with EMPVs, all the actuators on a pneumatic soft robot can be powered by a set of arterial pressure supplies, thus more actuators can be built into a soft robot without adding cumbersome tubes, making the soft robot more dexterous and biomimetic

    Development of a Fabrication Technique for Soft Planar Inflatable Composites

    Soft robotics is a rapidly growing field in robotics that combines aspects of biologically inspired characteristics to unorthodox methods capable of conforming and/or adapting to unknown tasks or environments that would otherwise be improbable or complex with conventional robotic technologies. The field of soft robotics has grown rapidly over the past decade with increasing popularity and relevance to real-world applications. However, the means of fabricating these soft, compliant and intricate robots still poses a fundamental challenge, due to the liberal use of soft materials that are difficult to manipulate in their original state such as elastomers and fabric. These material properties rely on informal design approaches and bespoke fabrication methods to build soft systems. As such, there are a limited variety of fabrication techniques used to develop soft robots which hinders the scalability of robots and the time to manufacture, thus limiting their development. This research focuses towards developing a novel fabrication method for constructing soft planar inflatable composites. The fundamental method is based on a sub-set of additive manufacturing known as composite layering. The approach is designed from a planar manner and takes layers of elastomeric materials, embedded strain-limiting and mask layers. These components are then built up through a layer-by-layer fabrication method with the use of a bespoke film applicator set-up. This enables the fabrication of millimetre-scale soft inflatable composites with complex integrated masks and/or strain-limiting layers. These inflatable composites can then be cut into a desired shape via laser cutting or ablation. A design approach was also developed to expand the functionality of these inflatable composites through modelling and simulation via finite element analysis. Proof of concept prototypes were designed and fabricated to enable pneumatic driven actuation in the form of bending soft actuators, adjustable stiffness sensor, and planar shape change. This technique highlights the feasibility of the fabrication method and the value of its use in creating multi-material composite soft actuators which are thin, compact, flexible, and stretchable and can be applicable towards real-world application
