    Robotic disassembly of electronic components to support end‐of‐life recycling of electric vehicles

    This thesis reports on the research undertaken to analyse the factors affecting End-of-Life (EoL) recycling of future Electric Vehicles (EVs). The principle objective of the research is to generate an understanding of challenges and opportunities for the development and implementation of an automated robotic disassembly approach to aid with EoL management of electrical and electronic components within EVs. The research contributions are considered in three main parts. The first part contains a review of advancement in the development of automotive technology, and in particular the alternative fuel vehicles. A review of existing industrial recycling technologies and processes has been conducted which highlighted a number of key challenges in the adoption of current recycling technologies for EVs. The review concludes that there is a need to develop novel recycling technologies and processes to deal with the increased part complexity and material mixture in such vehicles. In this context, the second part of the research details a framework for EoL management of EV components. This framework presents a comprehensive automated robotic disassembly approach in which three specific steps are defined, namely manual disassembly to develop an understanding of product design, initial automated disassembly to test process capability, and optimisation and validation to improve repeatability and efficiency of the robotic disassembly operations. The framework also includes the development of a multi-criteria decision-making tool that assesses the environmental, technological and economic benefits of such robotic disassembly approach. The applicability of the research concepts has been demonstrated via three case studies. The results have highlighted the applicability of the automated robotic disassembly approach in a variety of scenarios of different design complexity and recovery rate. The results indicate that the adoption of this robotic disassembly enhances the pre-concentration of Strategically Important Materials (SIMs) and leads to minimisation of environmental impacts and increased material recovery value

    Robotic automation in apparel manufacturing is reviewed and investigated. Gripper design for separation and de-stacking of batch cut fabric components is identified as an important factor in implementing such automation and a study of existing gripper mechanisms is presented. New de-stacking gripper designs and processes are described together with experimental results. Single fabric component handling, alignment and registration techniques are investigated. Some of these techniques are integrated within a demonstrator robotic garment assembly cell automating the common edge binding process. Performance results are reported

    Additive manufacturing and joints: Design and methods

    The industrialization of the Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes is enabling the use of AM components as final product in several applications. These processes are particularly relevant for manufacturing components with optimized custom-tailored geometries. However, to fully exploit the potentiality of AM, the development of knowledge aimed to produce dedicated design methods is needed. Indeed, even if AM enables the manufacturing of new kinds of structures, e.g. 3D lattice structures, it introduces process-specific design input and limitations that needs design methods different to from the ones for subtractive manufacturing. Design for AM (DfAM) is a design methodology that aims to take advantage of new buildable geometries but taking into account also AM processed materials anisotropy and 3D printing constraints. Recent literature focused on the assembly of AM components and on the AM components joining to a main structure. The conclusion was that adhesive bonding is a promising joining process, especially considering its improved stress distribution compared to fastening, but at the time of writing a method that combines DfAM and adhesive bonding knowledge is not available. The work presented in this thesis focused on developing knowledge on design for AM and bonded joints. First step was evaluating testing methods for AM and producing data on materials properties. Secondly, the early works on tailoring approaches for AM joints, published recently in scientific literature, were analyzed. Then AM dedicated designs, modifications and testing methods were proposed both for the adherends (in the thickness and on the surfaces) and the joints. Specifically, an innovative joint design concept was introduced, i.e. using the 3D printing parameters as bonded joint design factors. Eventually, feasibility of performing joints using multi-material AM with conductive polymer to embed heating elements was assessed. The 3D printed through the thickness circuits is a cutting-edge approach to enable new solutions for joints structural monitoring and self-healing

    High precision self-alignment using liquid surface tension for additively manufactured micro components

    Self-assembly of components using liquid surface tension is an attractive alternative to traditional robotic pick-and-place as it offers high assembly accuracy for coarse initial part placement. One of the key requirements of this method is the containment of the liquid within a designated binding site. This paper looks to expand the applications of self-assembly and investigates the use of topographical structures applied to 3D printed micro components for self-assembly using liquid surface tension. An analysis of the effect of edge geometry on liquid contact angle was conducted. A range of binding sites were produced with varying edge geometries, 45-135°, and for a variety of site shapes and sizes, 0.4 - 1 mm in diameter, and 0.5 x 0.5 – 1 x 1 mm square. Liquid water droplets were applied to the structures and contact angles measured. Significant increases in contact angle were observed, up to 158°, compared to 70° for droplets on planar surfaces, demonstrating the ability of these binding sites to successfully pin the triple contact line at the boundary. Three challenging self-assembly cases were examined, 1) linear initial component misplacement >0.5 mm, 2) angular misplacement of components, 3) 2 misplacement of droplet. Across all three assembly cases the lowest misalignments in final component position, as well as highest repeatability, were observed for structures with actual edge geometries <90° (excluding 45° nominal), where the mean magnitude of misalignment was found to be 31 ÎŒm with 14 ÎŒm standard deviation

    Impact of Ear Occlusion on In-Ear Sounds Generated by Intra-oral Behaviors

    We conducted a case study with one volunteer and a recording setup to detect sounds induced by the actions: jaw clenching, tooth grinding, reading, eating, and drinking. The setup consisted of two in-ear microphones, where the left ear was semi-occluded with a commercially available earpiece and the right ear was occluded with a mouldable silicon ear piece. Investigations in the time and frequency domains demonstrated that for behaviors such as eating, tooth grinding, and reading, sounds could be recorded with both sensors. For jaw clenching, however, occluding the ear with a mouldable piece was necessary to enable its detection. This can be attributed to the fact that the mouldable ear piece sealed the ear canal and isolated it from the environment, resulting in a detectable change in pressure. In conclusion, our work suggests that detecting behaviors such as eating, grinding, reading with a semi-occluded ear is possible, whereas, behaviors such as clenching require the complete occlusion of the ear if the activity should be easily detectable. Nevertheless, the latter approach may limit real-world applicability because it hinders the hearing capabilities.</p
