Fixed-parameter tractability, definability, and model checking
In this article, we study parameterized complexity theory from the
perspective of logic, or more specifically, descriptive complexity theory.
We propose to consider parameterized model-checking problems for various
fragments of first-order logic as generic parameterized problems and show how
this approach can be useful in studying both fixed-parameter tractability and
intractability. For example, we establish the equivalence between the
model-checking for existential first-order logic, the homomorphism problem for
relational structures, and the substructure isomorphism problem. Our main
tractability result shows that model-checking for first-order formulas is
fixed-parameter tractable when restricted to a class of input structures with
an excluded minor. On the intractability side, for every t >= 0 we prove an
equivalence between model-checking for first-order formulas with t quantifier
alternations and the parameterized halting problem for alternating Turing
machines with t alternations. We discuss the close connection between this
alternation hierarchy and Downey and Fellows' W-hierarchy.
On a more abstract level, we consider two forms of definability, called Fagin
definability and slicewise definability, that are appropriate for describing
parameterized problems. We give a characterization of the class FPT of all
fixed-parameter tractable problems in terms of slicewise definability in finite
variable least fixed-point logic, which is reminiscent of the Immerman-Vardi
Theorem characterizing the class PTIME in terms of definability in least
fixed-point logic.Comment: To appear in SIAM Journal on Computin
FO-Definability of Shrub-Depth
Shrub-depth is a graph invariant often considered as an extension of tree-depth to dense graphs. We show that the model-checking problem of monadic second-order logic on a class of graphs of bounded shrub-depth can be decided by AC^0-circuits after a precomputation on the formula. This generalizes a similar result on graphs of bounded tree-depth [Y. Chen and J. Flum, 2018]. At the core of our proof is the definability in first-order logic of tree-models for graphs of bounded shrub-depth
The complexity of definability by open first-order formulas
In this article, we formally define and investigate the computational complexity of the definability problem for open first-order formulas (i.e. quantifier free first-order formulas) with equality. Given a logic L, the L-definability problem for finite structures takes as an input a finite structure A and a target relation T over the domain of A and determines whether there is a formula of L whose interpretation in A coincides with T. We show that the complexity of this problem for open first-order formulas (open definability, for short) is coNP-complete. We also investigate the parametric complexity of the problem and prove that if the size and the arity of the target relation T are taken as parameters, then open definability is coW[1]-complete for every vocabulary Ď„ with at least one, at least binary, relation.Fil: Areces, Carlos Eduardo. Successor-Invariant First-Order Logic on Graphs with Excluded Topological Subgraphs
We show that the model-checking problem for successor-invariant first-order
logic is fixed-parameter tractable on graphs with excluded topological
subgraphs when parameterised by both the size of the input formula and the size
of the exluded topological subgraph. Furthermore, we show that model-checking
for order-invariant first-order logic is tractable on coloured posets of
bounded width, parameterised by both the size of the input formula and the
width of the poset.
Our result for successor-invariant FO extends previous results for this logic
on planar graphs (Engelmann et al., LICS 2012) and graphs with excluded minors
(Eickmeyer et al., LICS 2013), further narrowing the gap between what is known
for FO and what is known for successor-invariant FO. The proof uses Grohe and
Marx's structure theorem for graphs with excluded topological subgraphs. For
order-invariant FO we show that Gajarsk\'y et al.'s recent result for FO
carries over to order-invariant FO
On the Parameterized Intractability of Monadic Second-Order Logic
One of Courcelle's celebrated results states that if C is a class of graphs
of bounded tree-width, then model-checking for monadic second order logic
(MSO_2) is fixed-parameter tractable (fpt) on C by linear time parameterized
algorithms, where the parameter is the tree-width plus the size of the formula.
An immediate question is whether this is best possible or whether the result
can be extended to classes of unbounded tree-width. In this paper we show that
in terms of tree-width, the theorem cannot be extended much further. More
specifically, we show that if C is a class of graphs which is closed under
colourings and satisfies certain constructibility conditions and is such that
the tree-width of C is not bounded by \log^{84} n then MSO_2-model checking is
not fpt unless SAT can be solved in sub-exponential time. If the tree-width of
C is not poly-logarithmically bounded, then MSO_2-model checking is not fpt
unless all problems in the polynomial-time hierarchy can be solved in
sub-exponential time
An Algebraic Preservation Theorem for Aleph-Zero Categorical Quantified Constraint Satisfaction
We prove an algebraic preservation theorem for positive Horn definability in
aleph-zero categorical structures. In particular, we define and study a
construction which we call the periodic power of a structure, and define a
periomorphism of a structure to be a homomorphism from the periodic power of
the structure to the structure itself. Our preservation theorem states that,
over an aleph-zero categorical structure, a relation is positive Horn definable
if and only if it is preserved by all periomorphisms of the structure. We give
applications of this theorem, including a new proof of the known complexity
classification of quantified constraint satisfaction on equality templates
Fixed-Parameter Tractable Distances to Sparse Graph Classes
We show that for various classes of sparse graphs, and several measures of distance to such classes (such as edit distance and elimination distance), the problem of determining the distance of a given graph to is fixed-parameter tractable. The results are based on two general techniques. The first of these, building on recent work of Grohe et al. establishes that any class of graphs that is slicewise nowhere dense and slicewise first-order definable is FPT. The second shows that determining the elimination distance of a graph to a minor-closed class is FPT. We demonstrate that several prior results (of Golovach, Moser and Thilikos and Mathieson) on the fixed-parameter tractability of distance measures are special cases of our first method
Reduction Techniques for Graph Isomorphism in the Context of Width Parameters
We study the parameterized complexity of the graph isomorphism problem when
parameterized by width parameters related to tree decompositions. We apply the
following technique to obtain fixed-parameter tractability for such parameters.
We first compute an isomorphism invariant set of potential bags for a
decomposition and then apply a restricted version of the Weisfeiler-Lehman
algorithm to solve isomorphism. With this we show fixed-parameter tractability
for several parameters and provide a unified explanation for various
isomorphism results concerned with parameters related to tree decompositions.
As a possibly first step towards intractability results for parameterized graph
isomorphism we develop an fpt Turing-reduction from strong tree width to the a
priori unrelated parameter maximum degree.Comment: 23 pages, 4 figure
