    An Efficient Multiple Object Detection and Tracking Framework for Automatic Counting and Video Surveillance Applications

    Automatic visual object counting and video surveillance have important applications for home and business environments, such as security and management of access points. However, in order to obtain a satisfactory performance these technologies need professional and expensive hardware, complex installations and setups, and the supervision of qualified workers. In this paper, an efficient visual detection and tracking framework is proposed for the tasks of object counting and surveillance, which meets the requirements of the consumer electronics: off-the-shelf equipment, easy installation and configuration, and unsupervised working conditions. This is accomplished by a novel Bayesian tracking model that can manage multimodal distributions without explicitly computing the association between tracked objects and detections. In addition, it is robust to erroneous, distorted and missing detections. The proposed algorithm is compared with a recent work, also focused on consumer electronics, proving its superior performance

    Robust Ellipsoid Fitting Using Axial Distance and Combination

    In random sample consensus (RANSAC), the problem of ellipsoid fitting can be formulated as a problem of minimization of point-to-model distance, which is realized by maximizing model score. Hence, the performance of ellipsoid fitting is affected by distance metric. In this paper, we proposed a novel distance metric called the axial distance, which is converted from the algebraic distance by introducing a scaling factor to solve nongeometric problems of the algebraic distance. There is complementarity between the axial distance and Sampson distance because their combination is a stricter metric when calculating the model score of sample consensus and the weight of the weighted least squares (WLS) fitting. Subsequently, a novel sample-consensus-based ellipsoid fitting method is proposed by using the combination between the axial distance and Sampson distance (CAS). We compare the proposed method with several representative fitting methods through experiments on synthetic and real datasets. The results show that the proposed method has a higher robustness against outliers, consistently high accuracy, and a speed close to that of the method based on sample consensus.Comment: 13 page

    Analysis of 3D human gait reconstructed with a depth camera and mirrors

    L'évaluation de la démarche humaine est l'une des composantes essentielles dans les soins de santé. Les systèmes à base de marqueurs avec plusieurs caméras sont largement utilisés pour faire cette analyse. Cependant, ces systèmes nécessitent généralement des équipements spécifiques à prix élevé et/ou des moyens de calcul intensif. Afin de réduire le coût de ces dispositifs, nous nous concentrons sur un système d'analyse de la marche qui utilise une seule caméra de profondeur. Le principe de notre travail est similaire aux systèmes multi-caméras, mais l'ensemble de caméras est remplacé par un seul capteur de profondeur et des miroirs. Chaque miroir dans notre configuration joue le rôle d'une caméra qui capture la scène sous un point de vue différent. Puisque nous n'utilisons qu'une seule caméra, il est ainsi possible d'éviter l'étape de synchronisation et également de réduire le coût de l'appareillage. Notre thèse peut être divisée en deux sections: reconstruction 3D et analyse de la marche. Le résultat de la première section est utilisé comme entrée de la seconde. Notre système pour la reconstruction 3D est constitué d'une caméra de profondeur et deux miroirs. Deux types de capteurs de profondeur, qui se distinguent sur la base du mécanisme d'estimation de profondeur, ont été utilisés dans nos travaux. Avec la technique de lumière structurée (SL) intégrée dans le capteur Kinect 1, nous effectuons la reconstruction 3D à partir des principes de l'optique géométrique. Pour augmenter le niveau des détails du modèle reconstruit en 3D, la Kinect 2 qui estime la profondeur par temps de vol (ToF), est ensuite utilisée pour l'acquisition d'images. Cependant, en raison de réflections multiples sur les miroirs, il se produit une distorsion de la profondeur dans notre système. Nous proposons donc une approche simple pour réduire cette distorsion avant d'appliquer les techniques d'optique géométrique pour reconstruire un nuage de points de l'objet 3D. Pour l'analyse de la démarche, nous proposons diverses alternatives centrées sur la normalité de la marche et la mesure de sa symétrie. Cela devrait être utile lors de traitements cliniques pour évaluer, par exemple, la récupération du patient après une intervention chirurgicale. Ces méthodes se composent d'approches avec ou sans modèle qui ont des inconvénients et avantages différents. Dans cette thèse, nous présentons 3 méthodes qui traitent directement les nuages de points reconstruits dans la section précédente. La première utilise la corrélation croisée des demi-corps gauche et droit pour évaluer la symétrie de la démarche, tandis que les deux autres methodes utilisent des autoencodeurs issus de l'apprentissage profond pour mesurer la normalité de la démarche.The problem of assessing human gaits has received a great attention in the literature since gait analysis is one of key components in healthcare. Marker-based and multi-camera systems are widely employed to deal with this problem. However, such systems usually require specific equipments with high price and/or high computational cost. In order to reduce the cost of devices, we focus on a system of gait analysis which employs only one depth sensor. The principle of our work is similar to multi-camera systems, but the collection of cameras is replaced by one depth sensor and mirrors. Each mirror in our setup plays the role of a camera which captures the scene at a different viewpoint. Since we use only one camera, the step of synchronization can thus be avoided and the cost of devices is also reduced. Our studies can be separated into two categories: 3D reconstruction and gait analysis. The result of the former category is used as the input of the latter one. Our system for 3D reconstruction is built with a depth camera and two mirrors. Two types of depth sensor, which are distinguished based on the scheme of depth estimation, have been employed in our works. With the structured light (SL) technique integrated into the Kinect 1, we perform the 3D reconstruction based on geometrical optics. In order to increase the level of details of the 3D reconstructed model, the Kinect 2 with time-of-flight (ToF) depth measurement is used for image acquisition instead of the previous generation. However, due to multiple reflections on the mirrors, depth distortion occurs in our setup. We thus propose a simple approach for reducing such distortion before applying geometrical optics to reconstruct a point cloud of the 3D object. For the task of gait analysis, we propose various alternative approaches focusing on the problem of gait normality/symmetry measurement. They are expected to be useful for clinical treatments such as monitoring patient's recovery after surgery. These methods consist of model-free and model-based approaches that have different cons and pros. In this dissertation, we present 3 methods that directly process point clouds reconstructed from the previous work. The first one uses cross-correlation of left and right half-bodies to assess gait symmetry while the other ones employ deep auto-encoders to measure gait normality

    A Novel Technique to Detect and Track Multiple Objects in Dynamic Video Surveillance Systems

    Video surveillance is one of the important state of the art systems to be utilized in order to monitor different areas of modern society surveillance like the general public surveillance system, city traffic monitoring system, and forest monitoring system. Hence, surveillance systems have become especially relevant in the digital era. The needs of the video surveillance systems and its video analytics have become inevitable due to an increase in crimes and unethical behavior. Thus enabling the tracking of individuals object in video surveillance is an essential part of modern society. With the advent of video surveillance, performance measures for such surveillance also need to be improved to keep up with the ever increasing crime rates. So far, many methodologies relating to video surveillance have been introduced ranging from single object detection with a single or multiple cameras to multiple object detection using single or multiple cameras. Despite this, performance benchmarks and metrics need further improvements. While mechanisms exist for single or multiple object detection and prediction on videos or images, none can meet the criteria of detection and tracking of multiple objects in static as well as dynamic environments. Thus, real-world multiple object detection and prediction systems need to be introduced that are both accurate as well as fast and can also be adopted in static and dynamic environments. This paper introduces the Densely Feature selection Convolutional neural Network – Hyper Parameter tuning (DFCNHP) and it is a hybrid protocol with faster prediction time and high accuracy levels. The proposed system has successfully tracked multiple objects from multiple channels and is a combination of dense block, feature selection, background subtraction and Bayesian methods. The results of the experiment conducted demonstrated an accuracy of 98% and 1.11 prediction time and these results have also been compared with existing methods such as Kalman Filtering (KF) and Deep Neural Network (DNN)

    Shape Representation in Primate Visual Area 4 and Inferotemporal Cortex

    The representation of contour shape is an essential component of object recognition, but the cortical mechanisms underlying it are incompletely understood, leaving it a fundamental open question in neuroscience. Such an understanding would be useful theoretically as well as in developing computer vision and Brain-Computer Interface applications. We ask two fundamental questions: “How is contour shape represented in cortex and how can neural models and computer vision algorithms more closely approximate this?” We begin by analyzing the statistics of contour curvature variation and develop a measure of salience based upon the arc length over which it remains within a constrained range. We create a population of V4-like cells – responsive to a particular local contour conformation located at a specific position on an object’s boundary – and demonstrate high recognition accuracies classifying handwritten digits in the MNIST database and objects in the MPEG-7 Shape Silhouette database. We compare the performance of the cells to the “shape-context” representation (Belongie et al., 2002) and achieve roughly comparable recognition accuracies using a small test set. We analyze the relative contributions of various feature sensitivities to recognition accuracy and robustness to noise. Local curvature appears to be the most informative for shape recognition. We create a population of IT-like cells, which integrate specific information about the 2-D boundary shapes of multiple contour fragments, and evaluate its performance on a set of real images as a function of the V4 cell inputs. We determine the sub-population of cells that are most effective at identifying a particular category. We classify based upon cell population response and obtain very good results. We use the Morris-Lecar neuronal model to more realistically illustrate the previously explored shape representation pathway in V4 – IT. We demonstrate recognition using spatiotemporal patterns within a winnerless competition network with FitzHugh-Nagumo model neurons. Finally, we use the Izhikevich neuronal model to produce an enhanced response in IT, correlated with recognition, via gamma synchronization in V4. Our results support the hypothesis that the response properties of V4 and IT cells, as well as our computer models of them, function as robust shape descriptors in the object recognition process

    This document represents the final report for the View Generated Database (VGD) project, NAS7-1066. It documents the work done on the project up to the point at which all project work was terminated due to lack of project funds. The VGD was to provide the capability to accurately represent any real-world object or scene as a computer model. Such models include both an accurate spatial/geometric representation of surfaces of the object or scene, as well as any surface detail present on the object. Applications of such models are numerous, including acquisition and maintenance of work models for tele-autonomous systems, generation of accurate 3-D geometric/photometric models for various 3-D vision systems, and graphical models for realistic rendering of 3-D scenes via computer graphics
