    This report discusses the use of vision feedback for autonomous navigation by a mobile robot in indoor environments. In particular, we have discussed in detail the issues of camera calibration and how binocular and monocular vision may be utilized for self-location by the robot. A noteworthy feature of monocular vision is that the camera image is compared with a CAD model of the interior of the hallways using the PSEIKI reasoning system; this reasoning system allows the comparison to take place at different levels of geometric detail

    Communication framework for distributed computer vision on stationary and mobile platforms

    Recent advances in the complexity and manufacturability of digital video cameras coupled with the ubiquity of high speed computers and communication networks have led to burgeoning research in the fields of computer vision and image understanding. As the generated vision algorithms become increasingly complex, a need arises for robust communication between remote cameras on mobile units and their associated distributed vision algorithms. A communication framework would provide a basis for modularization and abstraction of a collection of computer vision algorithms; the resulting system would allow for straightforward image capture, simplified communication between algorithms, and easy replacement or upgrade of existing component algorithms. The objective of this thesis is to create such a communication framework and demonstrate its viability and applicability by implementing a relatively complex system of distributed computer vision algorithms. These multi-camera algorithms include body tracking, pose estimation and face recognition. Although a plethora of research exists documenting individual algorithms which may utilize multiple networked cameras, this thesis aims to develop a novel way of sharing information between cameras and algorithms in a distributed computation system. In addition, this thesis strives to extend such an approach to using both stationary and mobile cameras. For this application, a mobile computer vision platform was developed that integrates seamlessly with the aforementioned communication framework, extending both its functionality and robustness

    Mapping three-dimensional geological features from remotely-sensed images and digital elevation models.

    Accurate mapping of geological structures is important in numerous applications, ranging from mineral exploration through to hydrogeological modelling. Remotely sensed data can provide synoptic views of study areas enabling mapping of geological units within the area. Structural information may be derived from such data using standard manual photo-geologic interpretation techniques, although these are often inaccurate and incomplete. The aim of this thesis is, therefore, to compile a suite of automated and interactive computer-based analysis routines, designed to help a the user map geological structure. These are examined and integrated in the context of an expert system. The data used in this study include Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and Airborne Thematic Mapper images, both with a spatial resolution of 5m, for a 5 x 5 km area surrounding Llyn Cow lyd, Snowdonia, North Wales. The geology of this area comprises folded and faulted Ordo vician sediments intruded throughout by dolerite sills, providing a stringent test for the automated and semi-automated procedures. The DEM is used to highlight geomorphological features which may represent surface expressions of the sub-surface geology. The DEM is created from digitized contours, for which kriging is found to provide the best interpolation routine, based on a number of quantitative measures. Lambertian shading and the creation of slope and change of slope datasets are shown to provide the most successful enhancement of DEMs, in terms of highlighting a range of key geomorphological features. The digital image data are used to identify rock outcrops as well as lithologically controlled features in the land cover. To this end, a series of standard spectral enhancements of the images is examined. In this respect, the least correlated 3 band composite and a principal component composite are shown to give the best visual discrimination of geological and vegetation cover types. Automatic edge detection (followed by line thinning and extraction) and manual interpretation techniques are used to identify a set of 'geological primitives' (linear or arc features representing lithological boundaries) within these data. Inclusion of the DEM data provides the three-dimensional co-ordinates of these primitives enabling a least-squares fit to be employed to calculate dip and strike values, based, initially, on the assumption of a simple, linearly dipping structural model. A very large number of scene 'primitives' is identified using these procedures, only some of which have geological significance. Knowledge-based rules are therefore used to identify the relevant. For example, rules are developed to identify lake edges, forest boundaries, forest tracks, rock-vegetation boundaries, and areas of geomorphological interest. Confidence in the geological significance of some of the geological primitives is increased where they are found independently in both the DEM and remotely sensed data. The dip and strike values derived in this way are compared to information taken from the published geological map for this area, as well as measurements taken in the field. Many results are shown to correspond closely to those taken from the map and in the field, with an error of < 1°. These data and rules are incorporated into an expert system which, initially, produces a simple model of the geological structure. The system also provides a graphical user interface for manual control and interpretation, where necessary. Although the system currently only allows a relatively simple structural model (linearly dipping with faulting), in the future it will be possible to extend the system to model more complex features, such as anticlines, synclines, thrusts, nappes, and igneous intrusions

    International audienceThis chapter is dedicated to the analysis and the interpretation of graphical documents, and as such, builds upon many of the topics covered in other parts of this handbook. It will therefore not focus on any of the technical issues related to graphical documents, such as low level filtering and binarization, primitive extraction and vectorization as developed in Chapters 2.1 and 5.1 or symbol recognition, for instance, as developed in Chapter 5.2. These tools are put in a broader framework and threaded together in complex pipelines to solve interpretation questions. This chapter provides an overview of how analysis strategies have contributed to constructing these pipelines, how specific domain knowledge is integrated in these analyses, and which interpretation contexts have been contributed to successful approaches

    Towards the automated analysis of simple polyphonic music : a knowledge-based approach

    PhDMusic understanding is a process closely related to the knowledge and experience of the listener. The amount of knowledge required is relative to the complexity of the task in hand. This dissertation is concerned with the problem of automatically decomposing musical signals into a score-like representation. It proposes that, as with humans, an automatic system requires knowledge about the signal and its expected behaviour to correctly analyse music. The proposed system uses the blackboard architecture to combine the use of knowledge with data provided by the bottom-up processing of the signal's information. Methods are proposed for the estimation of pitches, onset times and durations of notes in simple polyphonic music. A method for onset detection is presented. It provides an alternative to conventional energy-based algorithms by using phase information. Statistical analysis is used to create a detection function that evaluates the expected behaviour of the signal regarding onsets. Two methods for multi-pitch estimation are introduced. The first concentrates on the grouping of harmonic information in the frequency-domain. Its performance and limitations emphasise the case for the use of high-level knowledge. This knowledge, in the form of the individual waveforms of a single instrument, is used in the second proposed approach. The method is based on a time-domain linear additive model and it presents an alternative to common frequency-domain approaches. Results are presented and discussed for all methods, showing that, if reliably generated, the use of knowledge can significantly improve the quality of the analysis.Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) in the UK National Science Foundation (N.S.F.) in the United states.     Automatic Drum Transcription and Source Separation

    While research has been carried out on automated polyphonic music transcription, to-date the problem of automated polyphonic percussion transcription has not received the same degree of attention. A related problem is that of sound source separation, which attempts to separate a mixture signal into its constituent sources. This thesis focuses on the task of polyphonic percussion transcription and sound source separation of a limited set of drum instruments, namely the drums found in the standard rock/pop drum kit. As there was little previous research on polyphonic percussion transcription a broad review of music information retrieval methods, including previous polyphonic percussion systems, was also carried out to determine if there were any methods which were of potential use in the area of polyphonic drum transcription. Following on from this a review was conducted of general source separation and redundancy reduction techniques, such as Independent Component Analysis and Independent Subspace Analysis, as these techniques have shown potential in separating mixtures of sources. Upon completion of the review it was decided that a combination of the blind separation approach, Independent Subspace Analysis (ISA), with the use of prior knowledge as used in music information retrieval methods, was the best approach to tackling the problem of polyphonic percussion transcription as well as that of sound source separation. A number of new algorithms which combine the use of prior knowledge with the source separation abilities of techniques such as ISA are presented. These include sub-band ISA, Prior Subspace Analysis (PSA), and an automatic modelling and grouping technique which is used in conjunction with PSA to perform polyphonic percussion transcription. These approaches are demonstrated to be effective in the task of polyphonic percussion transcription, and PSA is also demonstrated to be capable of transcribing drums in the presence of pitched instruments
