Grounding Dynamic Spatial Relations for Embodied (Robot) Interaction
This paper presents a computational model of the processing of dynamic
spatial relations occurring in an embodied robotic interaction setup. A
complete system is introduced that allows autonomous robots to produce and
interpret dynamic spatial phrases (in English) given an environment of moving
objects. The model unites two separate research strands: computational
cognitive semantics and on commonsense spatial representation and reasoning.
The model for the first time demonstrates an integration of these different

Exploiting Deep Semantics and Compositionality of Natural Language for Human-Robot-Interaction
We develop a natural language interface for human robot interaction that
implements reasoning about deep semantics in natural language. To realize the
required deep analysis, we employ methods from cognitive linguistics, namely
the modular and compositional framework of Embodied Construction Grammar (ECG)
[Feldman, 2009]. Using ECG, robots are able to solve fine-grained reference
resolution problems and other issues related to deep semantics and
compositionality of natural language. This also includes verbal interaction
with humans to clarify commands and queries that are too ambiguous to be
executed safely. We implement our NLU framework as a ROS package and present
proof-of-concept scenarios with different robots, as well as a survey on the
state of the art
Proofs Versus Experiments: Wittgensteinian Themes Surrounding the Four-Color Theorem
The Four-Colour Theorem (4CT) proof, presented to the mathematical
community in a pair of papers by Appel and Haken in the late 1970's, provoked a series of philosophical debates. Many conceptual points of these disputes still require some elucidation. After a brief presentation of the main ideas of Appel and Hakenâs procedure for the proof and a reconstruction of Thomas Tymoczkoâs argument for the novelty of 4CTâs proof, we shall formulate some questions regarding the connections between the points raised by Tymoczko and some Wittgensteinian topics in the philosophy of mathematics such as the importance of the surveyability as a criterion for distinguishing mathematical proofs from empirical experiments. Our aim is to show that the âcharacteristic Wittgensteinian inventionâ (MĂŒhlhölzer 2006) â the strong distinction between proofs and experiments â can shed some light in the conceptual confusions surrounding the Four-Colour Theorem
Integration of Action and Language Knowledge: A Roadmap for Developmental Robotics

This in turn will benefit the design of cognitive robots capable of learning to handle and manipulate objects and tools autonomously, to cooperate and communicate with other robots and humans, and to adapt their abilities to changing internal, environmental, and social conditions. Four key areas of research challenges are discussed, specifically for the issues related to the understanding of: 1) how agents learn and represent compositional actions; 2) how agents learn and represent compositional lexica; 3) the dynamics of social interaction and learning; and 4) how compositional action and language representations are integrated to bootstrap the cognitive system. The review of specific issues and progress in these areas is then translated into a practical roadmap based on a series of milestones. These milestones provide a possible set of cognitive robotics goals and test scenarios, thus acting as a research roadmap for future work on cognitive developmental robotics.Peer reviewe
Diffusion or War? Foucault as a Reader of Tarde
The objective of this chapter is to clarify the social theory underlying in Foucaultâs
genealogy of power/knowledge thanks to a comparison with Tardeâs microsociology.
Nietzsche is often identified as the direct (and unique) predecessor of this genealogy, and
the habitual criticisms are worried about the intricate relations between Foucault and Marx.
These perspectives omit to point to another â and more direct â antecedent of Foucault`s
microphysics: the microsociology of Gabriel Tarde. Bio-power technologies must be read
as Tardian inventions that, by propagation, have reconfigured pre-existing social spaces,
building modern societies. We will see how the Tardean source in Foucaultâs genealogy
sheds new clarity about the micro-socio-logic involved in it, enabling us to identify some of
its aporiae and to imagine some solutions in this respect as well
Mundari: The myth of a language without word classes
Mundari, an Austroasiatic language of India (Munda family), has often been cited as an example of a language without word classes, where a single word can function as noun, verb, adjective, etc. according to the context. These claims, originating in a 1903 grammar by the missionary John Hoffmann, have recently been repeated uncritically by a number of typologists. In this article we review the evidence for word class fluidity, on the basis of a careful analysis of Hoffmann's corpus as well as substantial new data, including a large lexical sample at two levels of detail. We argue that in fact Mundari does have clearly definable word classes, with distinct open classes of verb and noun, in addition to a closed adjective class, though there are productive possibilities for using all as predicates. Along the way, we elaborate a series of criteria that would need to be met before any language could seriously be claimed to lack a noun-verb distinction: most importantly strict compositionality, bidirectional flexibility, and exhaustiveness through the lexicon
