Firefly Mating Algorithm for Continuous Optimization Problems
This paper proposes a swarm intelligence algorithm, called firefly mating algorithm (FMA), for solving continuous optimization problems. FMA uses genetic algorithm as the core of the algorithm. The main feature of the algorithm is a novel mating pair selection method which is inspired by the following 2 mating behaviors of fireflies in nature: (i) the mutual attraction between males and females causes them to mate and (ii) fireflies of both sexes are of the multiple-mating type, mating with multiple opposite sex partners. A female continues mating until her spermatheca becomes full, and, in the same vein, a male can provide sperms for several females until his sperm reservoir is depleted. This new feature enhances the global convergence capability of the algorithm. The performance of FMA was tested with 20 benchmark functions (sixteen 30-dimensional functions and four 2-dimensional ones) against FA, ALC-PSO, COA, MCPSO, LWGSODE, MPSODDS, DFOA, SHPSOS, LSA, MPDPGA, DE, and GABC algorithms. The experimental results showed that the success rates of our proposed algorithm with these functions were higher than those of other algorithms and the proposed algorithm also required fewer numbers of iterations to reach the global optima
Review of Metaheuristics and Generalized Evolutionary Walk Algorithm
Metaheuristic algorithms are often nature-inspired, and they are becoming
very powerful in solving global optimization problems. More than a dozen of
major metaheuristic algorithms have been developed over the last three decades,
and there exist even more variants and hybrid of metaheuristics. This paper
intends to provide an overview of nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithms,
from a brief history to their applications. We try to analyze the main
components of these algorithms and how and why they works. Then, we intend to
provide a unified view of metaheuristics by proposing a generalized
evolutionary walk algorithm (GEWA). Finally, we discuss some of the important
open questions.Comment: 14 page
A Brief Survey on Intelligent Swarm-Based Algorithms for Solving Optimization Problems
This chapter presents an overview of optimization techniques followed by a brief survey on several swarm-based natural inspired algorithms which were introduced in the last decade. These techniques were inspired by the natural processes of plants, foraging behaviors of insects and social behaviors of animals. These swam intelligent methods have been tested on various standard benchmark problems and are capable in solving a wide range of optimization issues including stochastic, robust and dynamic problems
Determination of optimal tool path in drilling operation using Modified Shuffled Frog Leaping Algorithm
Applications like boilerplates, food-industry processing separator, printed circuit boards, drum and trammel screens, etc. consists of a matrix of a large number of holes. The primary issue involved in hole-making operations is a tool travel time. It is often necessary to find the optimal sequence of operations so that the total processing cost of hole-making operations can be minimized. In this work, therefore an attempt is made to reduce the total tool travel of hole-making operations by applying a relatively new optimization algorithm known as modified shuffled frog leaping for determining the optimal sequence of operations. Modification is made in the existing shuffled frog-leaping algorithm by introducing three parameters with their positive values to widen the search capability of existing algorithms. A case study of the printed circuit board is considered in this work to demonstrate the proposed approach. Obtained results of optimization using modified shuffled frog leaping algorithm are compared with those obtained using particle swarm optimization, firefly algorithm and shortest path search algorithm
Introductory Review of Swarm Intelligence Techniques
With the rapid upliftment of technology, there has emerged a dire need to
fine-tune or optimize certain processes, software, models or structures, with
utmost accuracy and efficiency. Optimization algorithms are preferred over
other methods of optimization through experimentation or simulation, for their
generic problem-solving abilities and promising efficacy with the least human
intervention. In recent times, the inducement of natural phenomena into
algorithm design has immensely triggered the efficiency of optimization process
for even complex multi-dimensional, non-continuous, non-differentiable and
noisy problem search spaces. This chapter deals with the Swarm intelligence
(SI) based algorithms or Swarm Optimization Algorithms, which are a subset of
the greater Nature Inspired Optimization Algorithms (NIOAs). Swarm intelligence
involves the collective study of individuals and their mutual interactions
leading to intelligent behavior of the swarm. The chapter presents various
population-based SI algorithms, their fundamental structures along with their
mathematical models.Comment: Submitted to Springe
