Solution of heat equation by a novel implicit scheme using block hybrid preconditioning of the conjugate gradient method
The main goal of the study is the approximation of the solution to the Dirichlet boundary value problem (DBVP) of the heat equation on a rectangle by developing a new difference method on a grid system of hexagons. It is proved that the given special scheme is unconditionally stable and converges to the exact solution on the grids with fourth order accuracy in space variables and second order accuracy in time variable. Secondly, an incomplete block factorization is given for symmetric positive definite block tridiagonal (SPD-BT) matrices utilizing a conservative iterative method that approximates the inverse of the pivoting diagonal blocks by preserving the symmetric positive definite property. Subsequently, by using this factorization block hybrid preconditioning of the conjugate gradient (BHP-CG) method is applied to solve the obtained algebraic system of equations at each time level
Control of spatio-temporal pattern formation governed by geometrical models of interface evolution
Numerous natural phenomena are characterized by spatio-temporal dynamics which give rise to time evolving spatial patterns. Although studies that address the problem of modelling these complex dynamics exist, a model based control approach for such systems is still a challenging task. Indoor And Outdoor Real Time Information Collection in Disaster Scenario
A disaster usually severely harms human health and property. After a disaster, great amount of information of a disaster area is needed urgently. The information not only indicates the severity of the disaster, but also is crucial for an efficient search and rescue process. In order to quickly and accurately collect real time information in a disaster scenario, a mobile platform is developed for an outdoor scenario and a localization and navigation system for responders is introduced for an indoor scenario.
The mobile platform has been integrated to the DIORAMA system. It is built with a 6-wheel robot chassis along with an Arduino microcontroller. Controlled by a mounted Android smartphone, the mobile platform can receive commands from incident commanders and quickly respond to the commands. While patrolling in a disaster area, a constant RFID signal is collected to improve the localization accuracy of victims. Pictures and videos are also captured in order to enhance the situational awareness of rescuers.
The design of the indoor information collection is focused on the responder side. During a disaster scenario, it is hard to track responders’ locations in an indoor environment. In this thesis, an indoor localization and navigation system based on Bluetooth low energy and Android is developed for helping responders report current location and quickly find the right path in the environment. Different localization algorithms are investigated and implemented. A navigation system based on AÂ* is also proposed
Aerial Drone-based System for Wildfire Monitoring and Suppression
Wildfire, also known as forest fire or bushfire, being an uncontrolled fire crossing an area of combustible vegetation, has become an inherent natural feature of the landscape in many regions of the world. From local to global scales, wildfire has caused substantial social, economic and environmental consequences. Given the hazardous nature of wildfire, developing automated and safe means to monitor and fight the wildfire is of special interest. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), equipped with appropriate sensors and fire retardants, are available to remotely monitor and fight the area undergoing wildfires, thus helping fire brigades in mitigating the influence of wildfires. This thesis is dedicated to utilizing UAVs to provide automated surveillance, tracking and fire suppression services on an active wildfire event. Considering the requirement of collecting the latest information of a region prone to wildfires, we presented a strategy to deploy the estimated minimum number of UAVs over the target space with nonuniform importance, such that they can persistently monitor the target space to provide a complete area coverage whilst keeping a desired frequency of visits to areas of interest within a predefined time period. Considering the existence of occlusions on partial segments of the sensed wildfire boundary, we processed both contour and flame surface features of wildfires with a proposed numerical algorithm to quickly estimate the occluded wildfire boundary. To provide real-time situational awareness of the propagated wildfire boundary, according to the prior knowledge of the whole wildfire boundary is available or not, we used the principle of vector field to design a model-based guidance law and a model-free guidance law. The former is derived from the radial basis function approximated wildfire boundary while the later is based on the distance between the UAV and the sensed wildfire boundary. Both vector field based guidance laws can drive the UAV to converge to and patrol along the dynamic wildfire boundary. To effectively mitigate the impacts of wildfires, we analyzed the advancement based activeness of the wildfire boundary with a signal prominence based algorithm, and designed a preferential firefighting strategy to guide the UAV to suppress fires along the highly active segments of the wildfire boundary

End user oriented BIM enabled multi-functional virtual environment supporting building emergency planning and evacuation
Relevant research has identified that high level of building emergency casualty (e.g. due to fire) has direct link with the delayed evacuation especially in residential and high-rising buildings. The traditional fire drill can only passively identify some bottleneck for evacuation after the building has been constructed and under its operation stage; and end-users normally lack of means to be effectively involved in the decision making process in the first place (e.g. building emergency planning and design) and lack of cost-effective and convenient means to be well trained about emergency evacuation at later operation stage. Modern building emergency management research has highlighted the need for the effective utilization of dynamically updated building emergency information. Building Information Modelling (BIM) has become the information backbone which can enable integration and collaboration throughout the entire building life cycle. BIM can play a significant role in building emergency management due to its comprehensive and standardized data format and integrated life cycle process.
This PhD research aims at developing an end user oriented BIM enabled virtual environment to address several key issues for building emergency evacuation and planning. The focus lies on how to utilize BIM as a comprehensive building information provider to work with virtual reality technology to build an adaptable immersive serious game for complex buildings to provide general end users emergency evacuation training/guides. The contribution lies on the seamless integration between BIM and a serious game based Virtual Reality (VR) environment, which enables effective engagement of end-uses. By doing so potential bottlenecks for existing and new buildings for emergency evacuation can be identified and rectified in a timely and cost-effective manner. The system has been tested for its robustness and functionality against the research hypothesis and research questions, and the results show promising potential to support more effective fire emergency evacuation and planning solutions
