Modeling photo-detectors in quantum optics
Photo-detection plays a fundamental role in experimental quantum optics and
is of particular importance in the emerging field of linear optics quantum
computing. Present theoretical treatment of photo-detectors is highly idealized
and fails to consider many important physical effects. We present a physically
motivated model for photo-detectors which accommodates for the effects of
finite resolution, bandwidth and efficiency, as well as dark-counts and
dead-time. We apply our model to two simple well known applications, which
illustrates the significance of these characteristics.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
Robust output stabilization: improving performance via supervisory control
We analyze robust stability, in an input-output sense, of switched stable
systems. The primary goal (and contribution) of this paper is to design
switching strategies to guarantee that input-output stable systems remain so
under switching. We propose two types of {\em supervisors}: dwell-time and
hysteresis based. While our results are stated as tools of analysis they serve
a clear purpose in design: to improve performance. In that respect, we
illustrate the utility of our findings by concisely addressing a problem of
observer design for Lur'e-type systems; in particular, we design a hybrid
observer that ensures ``fast'' convergence with ``low'' overshoots. As a second
application of our main results we use hybrid control in the context of
synchronization of chaotic oscillators with the goal of reducing control
effort; an originality of the hybrid control in this context with respect to
other contributions in the area is that it exploits the structure and chaotic
behavior (boundedness of solutions) of Lorenz oscillators.Comment: Short version submitted to IEEE TA
Chaotic Observer-based Synchronization Under Information Constraints
Limit possibilities of observer-based synchronization systems under
information constraints (limited information capacity of the coupling channel)
are evaluated. We give theoretical analysis for multi-dimensional
drive-response systems represented in the Lurie form (linear part plus
nonlinearity depending only on measurable outputs). It is shown that the upper
bound of the limit synchronization error (LSE) is proportional to the upper
bound of the transmission error. As a consequence, the upper and lower bounds
of LSE are proportional to the maximum rate of the coupling signal and
inversely proportional to the information transmission rate (channel capacity).
Optimality of the binary coding for coders with one-step memory is established.
The results are applied to synchronization of two chaotic Chua systems coupled
via a channel with limited capacity.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, 27 reference
