Remote State Estimation with Smart Sensors over Markov Fading Channels
We consider a fundamental remote state estimation problem of discrete-time
linear time-invariant (LTI) systems. A smart sensor forwards its local state
estimate to a remote estimator over a time-correlated -state Markov fading
channel, where the packet drop probability is time-varying and depends on the
current fading channel state. We establish a necessary and sufficient condition
for mean-square stability of the remote estimation error covariance as
, where denotes the
spectral radius, is the state transition matrix of the LTI system,
is a diagonal matrix containing the packet drop probabilities in
different channel states, and is the transition probability matrix
of the Markov channel states. To derive this result, we propose a novel
estimation-cycle based approach, and provide new element-wise bounds of matrix
powers. The stability condition is verified by numerical results, and is shown
more effective than existing sufficient conditions in the literature. We
observe that the stability region in terms of the packet drop probabilities in
different channel states can either be convex or concave depending on the
transition probability matrix . Our numerical results suggest that
the stability conditions for remote estimation may coincide for setups with a
smart sensor and with a conventional one (which sends raw measurements to the
remote estimator), though the smart sensor setup achieves a better estimation
performance.Comment: The paper has been accepted by IEEE Transactions on Automatic

Energy and bursty packet loss tradeoff over fading channels: a system-level model
Energy efficiency and quality of service (QoS) guarantees are the key design goals for the 5G wireless communication systems. In this context, we discuss a multiuser scheduling scheme over fading channels for loss tolerant applications. The loss tolerance of the application is characterized in terms of different parameters that contribute to quality of experience (QoE) for the application. The mobile users are scheduled opportunistically such that a minimum QoS is guaranteed. We propose an opportunistic scheduling scheme and address the cross-layer design framework when channel state information (CSI) is not perfectly available at the transmitter and the receiver. We characterize the system energy as a function of different QoS and channel state estimation error parameters. The optimization problem is formulated using Markov chain framework and solved using stochastic optimization techniques. The results demonstrate that the parameters characterizing the packet loss are tightly coupled and relaxation of one parameter does not benefit the system much if the other constraints are tight. We evaluate the energy-performance tradeoff numerically and show the effect of channel uncertainty on the packet scheduler design
Spatial spectrum and energy efficiency of random cellular networks
It is a great challenge to evaluate the network performance of cellular
mobile communication systems. In this paper, we propose new spatial spectrum
and energy efficiency models for Poisson-Voronoi tessellation (PVT) random
cellular networks. To evaluate the user access the network, a Markov chain
based wireless channel access model is first proposed for PVT random cellular
networks. On that basis, the outage probability and blocking probability of PVT
random cellular networks are derived, which can be computed numerically.
Furthermore, taking into account the call arrival rate, the path loss exponent
and the base station (BS) density in random cellular networks, spatial spectrum
and energy efficiency models are proposed and analyzed for PVT random cellular
networks. Numerical simulations are conducted to evaluate the network spectrum
and energy efficiency in PVT random cellular networks.Comment: appears in IEEE Transactions on Communications, April, 201
Optimal Online Transmission Policy for Energy-Constrained Wireless-Powered Communication Networks
This work considers the design of online transmission policy in a
wireless-powered communication system with a given energy budget. The system
design objective is to maximize the long-term throughput of the system
exploiting the energy storage capability at the wireless-powered node. We
formulate the design problem as a constrained Markov decision process (CMDP)
problem and obtain the optimal policy of transmit power and time allocation in
each fading block via the Lagrangian approach. To investigate the system
performance in different scenarios, numerical simulations are conducted with
various system parameters. Our simulation results show that the optimal policy
significantly outperforms a myopic policy which only maximizes the throughput
in the current fading block. Moreover, the optimal allocation of transmit power
and time is shown to be insensitive to the change of modulation and coding
schemes, which facilitates its practical implementation.Comment: 7 pages, accepted by ICC 2019. An extended version of this paper is

A Survey of Air-to-Ground Propagation Channel Modeling for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the use of unmanned
aerial vehicles (UAVs), particularly for small UAVs, due to their affordable
prices, ease of availability, and ease of operability. Existing and future
applications of UAVs include remote surveillance and monitoring, relief
operations, package delivery, and communication backhaul infrastructure.
Additionally, UAVs are envisioned as an important component of 5G wireless
technology and beyond. The unique application scenarios for UAVs necessitate
accurate air-to-ground (AG) propagation channel models for designing and
evaluating UAV communication links for control/non-payload as well as payload
data transmissions. These AG propagation models have not been investigated in
detail when compared to terrestrial propagation models. In this paper, a
comprehensive survey is provided on available AG channel measurement campaigns,
large and small scale fading channel models, their limitations, and future
research directions for UAV communication scenarios
