    Financial LPPL Bubbles with Mean-Reverting Noise in the Frequency Domain

    The log-periodic power law (LPPL) is a model of asset prices during endogenous bubbles. A major open issue is to verify the presence of LPPL in price sequences and to estimate the LPPL parameters. Estimation is complicated by the fact that daily LPPL returns are typically orders of magnitude smaller than measured price returns, suggesting that noise obscures the underlying LPPL dynamics. However, if noise is mean-reverting, it would quickly cancel out over subsequent measurements. In this paper, we attempt to reject mean-reverting noise from price sequences by exploiting frequency-domain properties of LPPL and of mean reversion. First, we calculate the spectrum of mean-reverting \ou noise and devise estimators for the noise's parameters. Then, we derive the LPPL spectrum by breaking it down into its two main characteristics of power law and of log-periodicity. We compare price spectra with noise spectra during historical bubbles. In general, noise was strong also at low frequencies and, even if LPPL underlied price dynamics, LPPL would be obscured by noise

    Studies of an Off-Lattice Model for Protein Folding: Sequence Dependence and Improved Sampling at Finite Temperature

    We study the thermodynamic behavior of a simple off-lattice model for protein folding. The model is two-dimensional and has two different ``amino acids''. Using numerical simulations of all chains containing eight or ten monomers, we examine the sequence dependence at a fixed temperature. It is shown that only a few of the chains exist in unique folded state at this temperature, and the energy level spectra of chains with different types of behavior are compared. Furthermore, we use this model as a testbed for two improved Monte Carlo algorithms. Both algorithms are based on letting some parameter of the model become a dynamical variable; one of the algorithms uses a fluctuating temperature and the other a fluctuating monomer sequence. We find that by these algorithms one gains large factors in efficiency in comparison with conventional methods.Comment: 17 pages, 9 Postscript figures. Combined with chem-ph/950500

    Compressible magnetoconvection in three dimensions: pattern formation in a strongly stratified layer

    The interaction between magnetic fields and convection is interesting both because of its astrophysical importance and because the nonlinear Lorentz force leads to an especially rich variety of behaviour. We present several sets of computational results for magnetoconvection in a square box, with periodic lateral boundary conditions, that show transitions from steady convection with an ordered planform through a regime with intermittent bursts to complicated spatiotemporal behaviour. The constraints imposed by the square lattice are relaxed as the aspect ratio is increased. In wide boxes we find a new regime, in which regions with strong fields are separated from regions with vigorous convection. We show also how considerations of symmetry and associated group theory can be used to explain the nature of these transitions and the sequence in which the relevant bifurcations occur

    Finite size effects on calorimetric cooperativity of two-state proteins

    Finite size effects on the calorimetric cooperatity of the folding-unfolding transition in two-state proteins are considered using the Go lattice models with and without side chains. We show that for models without side chains a dimensionless measure of calorimetric cooperativity kappa2 defined as the ratio of the van't Hoff to calorimetric enthalpy does not depend on the number of amino acids N. The average value of kappa2 is about 3/4 which is lower than the experimental value kappa2=1. For models with side chains kappa2 approaches unity as kappa2 \sim N^mu, where exponent mu=0.17. Above the critical chain length Nc =135 these models can mimic the truly all-or-non folding-unfolding transition.Comment: 3 eps figures. To appear in the special issue of Physica
