    Finding long cycles in graphs

The first one is based on recent advances in statistical mechanics and relies on a message passing procedure. The second follows a more standard Monte Carlo Markov Chain strategy.     Computational methods for finding long simple cycles in complex networks

    © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Detection of long simple cycles in real-world complex networks finds many applications in layout algorithms, information flow modelling, as well as in bioinformatics. In this paper, we propose two computational methods for finding long cycles in real-world networks. The first method is an exact approach based on our own integer linear programming formulation of the problem and a data mining pipeline. This pipeline ensures that the problem is solved as a sequence of integer linear programs. The second method is a multi-start local search heuristic, which combines an initial construction of a long cycle using depth-first search with four different perturbation operators. Our experimental results are presented for social network samples, graphs studied in the network science field, graphs from DIMACS series, and protein-protein interaction networks. These results show that our formulation leads to a significantly more efficient exact approach to solve the problem than a previous formulation. For 14 out of 22 networks, we have found the optimal solutions. The potential of heuristics in this problem is also demonstrated, especially in the context of large-scale problem instances

    Circumference of 3-connected claw-free graphs and large Eulerian subgraphs of 3-edge-connected graphs

    AbstractThe circumference of a graph is the length of its longest cycles. Results of Jackson, and Jackson and Wormald, imply that the circumference of a 3-connected cubic n-vertex graph is Ω(n0.694), and the circumference of a 3-connected claw-free graph is Ω(n0.121). We generalize and improve the first result by showing that every 3-edge-connected graph with m edges has an Eulerian subgraph with Ω(m0.753) edges. We use this result together with the Ryjáček closure operation to improve the lower bound on the circumference of a 3-connected claw-free graph to Ω(n0.753). Our proofs imply polynomial time algorithms for finding large Eulerian subgraphs of 3-edge-connected graphs and long cycles in 3-connected claw-free graphs

    Maximum Weight Matching via Max-Product Belief Propagation

    Max-product "belief propagation" is an iterative, local, message-passing algorithm for finding the maximum a posteriori (MAP) assignment of a discrete probability distribution specified by a graphical model. Despite the spectacular success of the algorithm in many application areas such as iterative decoding, computer vision and combinatorial optimization which involve graphs with many cycles, theoretical results about both correctness and convergence of the algorithm are known in few cases (Weiss-Freeman Wainwright, Yeddidia-Weiss-Freeman, Richardson-Urbanke}. In this paper we consider the problem of finding the Maximum Weight Matching (MWM) in a weighted complete bipartite graph. We define a probability distribution on the bipartite graph whose MAP assignment corresponds to the MWM. We use the max-product algorithm for finding the MAP of this distribution or equivalently, the MWM on the bipartite graph. Even though the underlying bipartite graph has many short cycles, we find that surprisingly, the max-product algorithm always converges to the correct MAP assignment as long as the MAP assignment is unique. We provide a bound on the number of iterations required by the algorithm and evaluate the computational cost of the algorithm. We find that for a graph of size nn, the computational cost of the algorithm scales as O(n3)O(n^3), which is the same as the computational cost of the best known algorithm. Finally, we establish the precise relation between the max-product algorithm and the celebrated {\em auction} algorithm proposed by Bertsekas.     The ordinary game of Nim has a long history and is well-known in the area of combinatorial game theory. The solution to the ordinary game of Nim has been known for many years and lends itself to numerous other solutions to combinatorial games. Nim was extended to graphs by taking a fixed graph with a playing piece on a given vertex and assigning positive integer weight to the edges that correspond to a pile of stones in the ordinary game of Nim. Players move alternately from the playing piece across incident edges, removing weight from edges as they move. Few results in this area have been found, leading to its appeal. This dissertation examines broad classes of graphs in relation to the game of Nim to find winning strategies and to solve the problem of finding the winner of a game with both unit weighting assignments and with arbitrary weighting assignments. Such classes of graphs include the complete graph, the Petersen graph, hypercubes, and bipartite graphs. We also include the winning strategy for even cycles

    Unavoidable minors in graphs and matroids

    It is well known that every sufficiently large connected graph G has either a vertex of high degree or a long path. If we require G to be more highly connected, then we ensure the presence of more highly structured minors. In particular, for all positive integers k, every 2-connected graph G has a series minor isomorphic to a k-edge cycle or K_{2,k}. In 1993, Oxley, Oporowski, and Thomas extended this result to 3- and internally 4-connected graphs identifying all unavoidable series minors of these classes. Loosely speaking, a series minor allows for arbitrary edge deletions but only allows edges to be contracted when they meet a degree-2 vertex. Dually, a parallel minor allows for any edge contractions but restricts the deletion of edges to those that lie in 2-edge cycles. This dissertation begins by proving the dual results to those noted above. These identify all unavoidable parallel minors for finite graphs of low connectivity. Following this, corresponding results on unavoidable minors for infinite graphs are proved. The dissertation concludes by finding the unavoidable parallel minors for 3-connected regular matroids, which combines the results for unavoidable series and parallel minors for graphs with Seymour\u27s decomposition theorem for regular matroids

    We investigate the computational hardness of approximating the longest path and the longest cycle in undirected and directed graphs on n vertices. We show that * in any expander graph, we can find (n) long paths in polynomial time. * there is an algorithm that finds a path of length (log2 L/ log log L) in any undirected graph having a path of length L, in polynomial time. * there is an algorithm that finds a path of length (log2 n/ log log n) in any Hamiltonian directed graph of constant bounded outdegree, in polynomial time. * there cannot be an algorithm finding paths of length (n ) for any constant > 0 in a Hamiltonian directed graph of bounded outdegree in polynomial time, unless P = NP. * there cannot be an algorithm finding paths of length (log2+ n), or cycles of length (log1+ n) for any constant > 0 in a Hamiltonian directed graph of constant bounded outdegree in polynomial time, unless 3-Sat can be solved in subexponential time
