    Nothing is alive

    Get PDF
Finding an adequate definition of "life" has proven to be a tricky affair. In this article, I discuss the idea that nothing is really alive: we only say so. I shall argue that 'being alive' is not a genuine property of things, and that it only reflects the way we think and talk about things. An eliminativist strategy will then allow us to free ourselves from the burden of having to find a definition of life, and will allow us to focus on the genuinely interesting properties of living (and non-living) entities

Basins of Roots and Periodicity in Newton\u27s Method for Cubic Polynomials

    Get PDF
Newton\u27s method is a useful tool for finding roots of functions when analytical methods fail. The goal of our research was to understand the dynamics of Newton\u27s method on cubic polynomials with real coefficients. Usually iterations will converge quickly to the root. However, there are more interesting things that can happen. When we allow initial values to be chosen from the complex plane, we find that the points that converge are bounded by fractals. For some polynomials we found interesting phenomena including chaos and attracting periodic cycles. We classified which polynomials could have attracting periodic cycles

This is your brain on art. [Review of the book Neuroaesthetics.]

    Get PDF
The marvelous human brain excels at finding patterns, at discerning structure, so we feel surprised or confused when our expectations are violated or unmet: Imagine, if you dare, encountering a Starbucks without a laptop-toting freelancer or a suburban preschool without a kid named Carter. But incongruity is interesting if it stretches our concepts and builds meaningful knowledge, and the edited book Neuroaesthetics is interesting in this way. Brains and art are things that we rarely see together: few neuro studies appear in the psychology-of-art journals, and someone could lurk around the imaging lab for years without running across a dog-eared copy of The Story of Art or Axel’s Castle. Neuroaesthetics is thus an inviting neologism. What does this young field have to say

    How to Conduct Library Research

    Get PDF
The ability to conduct library research is an important skill to have when it comes to writing research papers or literature reviews. In this essay, I will be explaining in great detail the process of conducting useful research. I will also be giving examples from my experience finding research to further help you understand each step. In order to conduct library research, you should consider three things. First, come up with a specific research question interesting to you, secondly, find scholarly articles with abstracts on a library website, and lastly, briefly reading the parts in each article that relates to your topic

User recommendation algorithm in social tagging system based on hybrid user trust

    Get PDF
With the rapid growth of web 2.0 technologies, tagging become much more important today to facilitate personal organization and also provide a possibility for users to search information or discover new things with Collaborative Tagging Systems. However, the simplistic and user-centered design of this kind of systems cause the task of finding personally interesting users is becoming quite out of reach for the common user. Collaborative Filtering (CF) seems to be the most popular technique in recommender systems to deal with information overload issue but CF suffers from accuracy limitation. This is because CF always been attack by malicious users that will make it suffers in finding the truly interesting users. With this problem in mind, this study proposes a hybrid User Trust method to enhance CF in order to increase accuracy of user recommendation in social tagging system. This method is a combination of developing trust network based on user interest similarity and trust network from social network analysis. The user interest similarity is derived from personalized user tagging information. The hybrid User Trust method is able to find the most trusted users and selected as neighbours to generate recommendations. Experimental results show that the hybrid method outperforms the traditional CF algorithm. In addition, it indicated that the hybrid method give more accurate recommendation than the existing CF based on user trust

Why are smart people curious? Fluid intelligence, openness to experience, and interest.

The experience of interest is central to intrinsic motivation for learning, so it is important to understand the nature of interest and its sources. Individual differences in fluid intelligence (Gf) predict finding things more interesting, but it is possible that this effect is merely due to the overlap of Gf with openness to experience, a strong predictor of interest across many domains. The present research measured Gf, the Big Five traits, and the interestingness of contemporary poems and visual art. Latent variable models found that Gf predicted interest in both poems and pictures, even when openness and gender were included as predictors. Moreover, Gf and openness did not interact, indicating main effects rather than joint effects. The relationship between Gf and interest thus appears robust

Pengaruh Perkembangan Teknologi terhadap Pendidikan Islam

Islamic Religious Education is a subject that has been given to students from an early age, with the intention of familiarizing children with the Religion of Islam. The introduction of Islamic religious education to children has developed in every era, from those who previously used books or lectures, to now using electronic learning media. Islamic religious education learning media has many kinds of media and models, such as visual, audio, and audio-visual media. The development of the all-digital era certainly has positive and negative impacts, the positive impact is that learning is more interesting and can adapt to the potential of students, and the negative impact is that it is easy to find information what children want, with the fear of finding something that leads to negative things

Excluded Minority of P_8 for GF(4)-Representability

    Get PDF
One of the mainly interesting things of matroid theory is the representability of a matroid. Finding the set of all excluded minors for the representability is the solution of the representability. In 2000, Geelen, Gerards and Kapoor proved that is the complete set of GF(4)-representability. In this paper, we show that 8 P is an excluded minor for GF(4)-representability
