Video Registration in Egocentric Vision under Day and Night Illumination Changes
With the spread of wearable devices and head mounted cameras, a wide range of
application requiring precise user localization is now possible. In this paper
we propose to treat the problem of obtaining the user position with respect to
a known environment as a video registration problem. Video registration, i.e.
the task of aligning an input video sequence to a pre-built 3D model, relies on
a matching process of local keypoints extracted on the query sequence to a 3D
point cloud. The overall registration performance is strictly tied to the
actual quality of this 2D-3D matching, and can degrade if environmental
conditions such as steep changes in lighting like the ones between day and
night occur. To effectively register an egocentric video sequence under these
conditions, we propose to tackle the source of the problem: the matching
process. To overcome the shortcomings of standard matching techniques, we
introduce a novel embedding space that allows us to obtain robust matches by
jointly taking into account local descriptors, their spatial arrangement and
their temporal robustness. The proposal is evaluated using unconstrained
egocentric video sequences both in terms of matching quality and resulting
registration performance using different 3D models of historical landmarks. The
results show that the proposed method can outperform state of the art
registration algorithms, in particular when dealing with the challenges of
night and day sequences
TopSig: Topology Preserving Document Signatures
Performance comparisons between File Signatures and Inverted Files for text
retrieval have previously shown several significant shortcomings of file
signatures relative to inverted files. The inverted file approach underpins
most state-of-the-art search engine algorithms, such as Language and
Probabilistic models. It has been widely accepted that traditional file
signatures are inferior alternatives to inverted files. This paper describes
TopSig, a new approach to the construction of file signatures. Many advances in
semantic hashing and dimensionality reduction have been made in recent times,
but these were not so far linked to general purpose, signature file based,
search engines. This paper introduces a different signature file approach that
builds upon and extends these recent advances. We are able to demonstrate
significant improvements in the performance of signature file based indexing
and retrieval, performance that is comparable to that of state of the art
inverted file based systems, including Language models and BM25. These findings
suggest that file signatures offer a viable alternative to inverted files in
suitable settings and from the theoretical perspective it positions the file

Linear Global Translation Estimation with Feature Tracks
This paper derives a novel linear position constraint for cameras seeing a
common scene point, which leads to a direct linear method for global camera
translation estimation. Unlike previous solutions, this method deals with
collinear camera motion and weak image association at the same time. The final
linear formulation does not involve the coordinates of scene points, which
makes it efficient even for large scale data. We solve the linear equation
based on norm, which makes our system more robust to outliers in
essential matrices and feature correspondences. We experiment this method on
both sequentially captured images and unordered Internet images. The

Generation and Calibration of Linear Models of Aircraft with Highly Coupled Aeroelastic and Flight Dynamics
The lightweight structures and unconventional configurations being considered for the next generation of aircraft mean that any effort to predict or control the flight dynamics is impacted by the structural dynamics. One of the most severe forms of coupling between aeroelasticity and flight dynamics is an instability called body freedom flutter. The existing tools often assume a relatively weak effect of structural dynamics on the flight dynamics, and are therefore incapable of modeling strong interactions like body freedom flutter. A method of combining different sources of data traditionally used for aeroelasticity and flight dynamics is described by reconciling many of the differences between these models. By building upon past modeling efforts, a level of familiarity in the approach is achieved. Generally the differences from the traditional approaches are subtle but significant. The traditional frequency domain flutter model in a modal coordinate system is converted to a form consistent with a time domain flight dynamics model. The time domain rational function approximation about a non-inertial coordinate system and the unique constraints for the conversion between the inertial and non-inertial coordinate systems are discussed. A consistent transformation of the states of aeroelastic models to flight dynamics models is derived, which enables the integration of data from higher fidelity computational fluid dynamics models or wind-tunnel testing.
