Keeping a research journal that works for you

    Get PDF
Think of a research journal and you may imagine a well-thumbed notebook replete with insightful entries, answers to research questions and a chronicle of the key moments that led to this point. However, as Nicole Brown (author of Making the Most of Your Research Journal) outlines, misconceptions about the perfect research journal often derail this project before it has even begun. Highlighting four common myths about ‘the’ research journal, she suggests finding an enjoyable and creative medium for recording a range of activities around your work is more important than striving to replicate an ideal model

From Pre-Defined Topics to Research Questions: An Inquiry-Based Approach to Knowledge

In this interactive presentation, MSU librarians will replicate a library instruction session for first-year students. Audience members will participate in a Cephalonian Method icebreaker activity and use clickers to demonstrate the different ways both techniques can be used in the classroom. Participants will view a short (3-4 min.) video, develop critical questions, and construct keywords to begin finding answers. Instruction librarians will show how the answers are the basis of their thesis statements. Next, audience members will be divided into groups and directed to find information on the Web, the route a first-year student would naturally take. Then, groups will search for background information, scholarly articles, books, viewpoint essays, and general Web resources. A discussion will evolve about the myriad of limitations with using Web resources and the benefits of using parallel library resources such as online specialty encyclopedias, journal indexes, signed viewpoint articles, and the library catalog. Then instruction librarians will fully explore the benefits of using library resources to help students find authoritative, credible, and relevant sources in the academic library. The session ends with discussing what was discovered during the presentation, showing the customized course guide where all the library resources are organized, and giving a final clicker quiz to assess what was learned and what may still be unclear. Take away valuable tips and techniques from this session to use for your own information literacy instruction sessions

Cochlear implants: a tips & reference guide for teachers working with students using CIs

    Get PDF
Like a stampede, the cochlear implant (CI) has taken the worlds of deaf and hardof- hearing persons by storm. From its inception in the mid 1980\u27s, some have embraced the technology as a miracle cure, while others have thought of it as cultural genocide. Yet, today, many would argue that the implant has come and is here to stay. There are many teachers with students using implants who feel inadequately prepared to deal with this technology. You might be one of them. If you are, this booklet is for you...keep reading! This book will provide you with skills and expertise related to working with your student. My goal in providing you this resource is threefold: 1.) To enable you to become a teacher that can help your student become a successful (ie. auditory and speech skill development) and independent implant user; 2.) To prepare you to be an effective consultant to and partner with parents, teachers, audiologists, speech-language therapists (SLPs), and other colleagues in your immediate school environment; and 3.) To guide you to other resources that will assist you in finding answers to questions not included in this booklet. As a teacher myself, I believe it is our professional responsibility to meet the needs of our students to the best of our abilities. If you have a student using an implant, this booklet is a great start (and a great resource guide to keep returning to). Recognizing the time constraints of a teacher, I have attempted to pull together a wide breadth of information from multiple sources in an easy-to-read, easy-to-find format. After reading this booklet, I hope you agree. Tom Ohl The Autho

Finding Australia’s social enterprise sector: final report

    Get PDF
Executive Summary Social enterprises are organisations that: Are led by an economic, social, cultural, or environmental mission consistent with a public or community benefit; Trade to fulfil their mission; Derive a substantial portion of their income from trade; and Reinvest the majority of their profit/surplus in the fulfilment of their mission. This document reports on the research findings of the Finding Australia’s Social Enterprise Sector (FASES) project. FASES is a joint initiative of Social Traders and the Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies, Queensland University of Technology. It is a first attempt to identify the range and scope of social enterprises in Australia. The methodology utilised in this research included: a review of existing literature and methods of social enterprise mapping; establishment of a project website and preliminary discussion paper to stimulate public engagement with defining and identifying Australian social enterprises, which resulted in four online responses to the discussion paper and 157 nominations of social enterprises to be included in the research; a series of workshops and interviews with 34 key informants to assist in defining social enterprise for the purposes of the research; identification of the social enterprise population through a combination of web and media review, review of existing databases and feedback through the project website; development and administration of an online survey; and collation and analysis of secondary data. Five hundred and thirty-nine organisations commenced the online survey, of which 365 were valid social enterprises according to our definition. Based on pre-existing research data and information from our survey, we estimate that there are up to 20 000 Australian social enterprises. This estimate takes into account that some not for profit organisations have multiple business ventures, and that not all social enterprises are incorporated as not for profits. Our survey results suggest that the Australian social enterprise sector is mature, sustainable and internally diverse with regard to mission and organisational structure. Amongst the 365 survey respondents, 73% had been operational for at least five years, and 62% were at least 10 years old. Australian social enterprises seek to fulfil a diversity of missions and serve a wide variety of beneficiaries. As a whole, the dominant foci of our survey respondents were on creating opportunities for people to participate in their community, and on finding new solutions to social, environmental, cultural and economic problems. Australian social enterprises operate in every industry of our economy. Our survey data suggest that they trade predominantly in local and regional markets and focus on fulfilling their missions at local and regional goals. However, some social enterprises operate in international markets and seek to respond to missions of international scope
