Anatomy of Business Networks: Future Internet Enterprise Systems Accelerating Procurement Interoperability

Large Business Networks impose interoperability challenges on Enterprise Systems in the form of ERP and extended ERP, involving many organizations and people. First, the classic document exchange based system connection approach across company borderlines is time-consuming and costly. Second, today’s enterprise systems lack support of the people dimension with specific focus on enabling semi-structured and unstructured activities as part of the entire end-to-end-process. In this paper we present our research-in-progress of a running design science research project focusing on creating a software artifact that addresses the two challenges of significant integration effort and the lack of semi-structured and unstructured process support. We look at these two challenges specifically in the domain of procurement, where many connections between business partner result in high integration effort and involves a large number of semi-structured and unstructured activities

OBJECTIVES-BASED BUSINESS PROCESS REDESIGN IN FINANCIAL PLANNING – A CASE STUDY

Semi-structured processes appear in many domains. Especially within multinational enterprises, it is often impossible to implement completely structured and standardized processes because of a rapidly changing environment. Nevertheless, semi-structured processes have a potential for improvement. In order to meet or even outreach compliance and governance requirements it is essential for an enterprise to exploit such a potential. Yet, existing approaches either focus on entirely unstructured or fully structured processes. The goal of this paper is to present a framework for innovative process redesign to improve a semi-structured process and to illustrate the potential of such a theoretical framework, taking Bayer AG as an example. We achieve this goal in three steps: (i) we present our Objective-Based Business Process Redesign Model, including a list of objectives for the improvement of semi-structured business processes; (ii) we conduct the case study by executing our Redesign Model; (iii) we present the practical process along with its implementation and evaluation. The evaluation of our case study shows the vast potential for improvement in semi-structured processes, implemented by a considerable reduction in time and complexity

    Operationalizing and automating data governance

The ability to cross data from multiple sources represents a competitive advantage for organizations. Yet, the governance of the data lifecycle, from the data sources into valuable insights, is largely performed in an ad-hoc or manual manner. This is specifically concerning in scenarios where tens or hundreds of continuously evolving data sources produce semi-structured data. To overcome this challenge, we develop a framework for operationalizing and automating data governance. For the first, we propose a zoned data lake architecture and a set of data governance processes that allow the systematic ingestion, transformation and integration of data from heterogeneous sources, in order to make them readily available for business users. For the second, we propose a set of metadata artifacts that allow the automatic execution of data governance processes, addressing a wide range of data management challenges. We showcase the usefulness of the proposed approach using a real world use case, stemming from the collaborative project with the World Health Organization for the management and analysis of data about Neglected Tropical Diseases. Overall, this work contributes on facilitating organizations the adoption of data-driven strategies into a cohesive framework operationalizing and automating data governance. This work was partly supported by the DOGO4ML project, funded by the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación under project PID2020-117191RB-I00/AEI/10.13039/501100011033.
